Named It for the Dead,
Sometime since a secret order was organized in the town of Darlington. When all the preliminaries had been arranged and it became necessary to name tho lodge, there was a great discussion as to what it should be called. Many names were suggested, and there wore objections to all of them. It was declared that they should not name it for any living name, as it was uncertain what ho might be to disgrace tho name ami the older, on the other hand they could not find the name of one departed (hat was not in use. After much discussion and pretty lively times, an old gray headed citizen aropo and slowly but emphatically said: "Gentlemen, this i|tiarrel has lasted long enough. Von can't settle on anybody living or dead, still something dead suits you best. 1 suggest that you name it Darlington, the deadest thing I know of."

Wedding Reception.
West Indiana Avenue was in' a blaze of glory last night and the home of Thomas Quinlnn was the scene of a bril liant social event. Allison Dodd and his blushing sixteen-year-old bride arrived home from .Duirwiii.-, T'l yesterday afternoon and wore at home to about thirty invited guests in tho evening. Tho mansion was beautifully decorated and tho soft strain of enticing music floated out on the idlo summer evening, inspiring all who heard it with tho belief that love is beautiful and good. It was indeed a holy sight to view tho young couple, who in the. very spring time of life and bud of promiso had sworn to love, honor and cherish each other till death did them part. The bride and groom, glowing with modesty, beauty and grace, handsomely main tainod their parts and the entertainment passed off with true metre and rhythm of tho inspired epillinlanium of the swoot Itoman catulus. Tho symposium of which the guests took part was elaborate and inviting and all present expressed themselves as more than entertained. Tho only disagreeable feature of tlio evening was a loud charivari tendered the happy couple by about seventy-five of his boyish friends who iu the buoyancy of youthful spirit and exuberance of mirth appeared on tho scene burdened with fish horns and similar accompaniments. They proceeded to pour forth their souls in melody until invited into the house to eat, which they did and to sncli an alarming extent that there were not enough viands loft when they departed to make a good breakfast.

THE MEW TREASURER OF WABASH.
Ho Tiles His Bond and Takes JELis Office— Tlie Rotiring Treasurer. To day Alexander Thomson retired from tlio ollice of Treasurer of Wabasli College and turned the affairs over .to his successor, T. 11. Histine, who has duly filed liis bond of S50,000. Mr. Uistino will have his ofliee in tho room so long occupied by his successor, and will devote his entire tifne to the work, retiring from active participation in the business of tho law firm of Uistino & Kistine. Just here it would not bo inappropriate to quote a portion of President Tuttlo's report to the Trustees. It says:
Tho resignation of Mr. Thomson as Treasurer ought not to take place without special notice. Ho was elected to the office in June, 18G4, and has occupied it until this time, a period of twenty-seven years. The meeting of the Board June, 181U, was marked by tho fact that the college was reported out of debt. It was so cheering a fact that its mention at the close of the commencement exorcises was receivod with livoly satisfaction.
Nor was it in illusion. It was a great fact. But the currency was then in a low condition as to value. Tho dollar that year had sunk to about forty cents of purchasing power. The country was still involved in war which tasked its power to the utmost. Without accurate data I suppose tho college was nominally worth one hundred thousand dollars. It is now really worth seven or eight times as much as that.
Tho college since that time has made extensive repairs of the South Hall and the Normal building. It has added to Center Hall two wings, built *and equipped tho HoveyMusoun^PeckScientilic Hall, Yandes Library Hall, the 1 toiler building and the admirable apparatus for heating all tho buildings. I need not say tho money for these purposes has amounted to a large sum. In addition to this tho scientific apparatus in the several dopartinonts and the library, increasing from six or eight thousand volumes to over thirty thousand, iltogether have cost a largo sum of money. In addition to this must be named tho current expenses of the in stitution constantly accruing for salaries, labor, fuel, repairs, taxes and other necessaries. Tho aggregate for theso must reach many thousands ol dollars. I suppose the books would show the sums expended in fixed properties and current expenses. It muBt be a large amount and all of it has passed through Mr. Thomson's hands. 'During these twenty-seven years no employe of the college has needed to wait for his money when due.
During these years the Treasurer has seldom been away from his post—the longest being two periods of serious ill ness. He has been marvel of punctual and scrupulous attention to his business, And it is needless to say theso sen-ices have been invaluable to the college.
Mr. Thomson is tho fourth treasurer of Wabash College. John Giliiland's term of office was from June, 1832, to 1S34', Robert C. Gregory's term from 1834 to 1838, Edward O. Hovey's term from 183S to 1864, nnd Alexander Thomson's term from 18C4 to 1891. The first term was two years, tho second four years, the third twenty-six years and the fourth twenty-seven years. Tlie united period of Hovey nnd Thomson include 53 years. The college has beon singularly fortunate in her financial officers, not only in the long period of tho two last, but in the further fact that the treasury has never lost a dollar dur ing the fifty-nine years through dishon osty.
It is worth while to mention the fact that the terms of office ot the second and third Presidents of tho college lack only two years of equaling the united terms of the two Treasurers, Hovoy and Thomson.
Fred is Annoyed.
The Lafayette Journal man was behind tho bars of the northern pen the other day and oven his old friend Pettit has tho following in regard to him: "There has beon a groat amount of senseless stuff published about W. F. Pettit since his incarceration in the pen itentiary. One man has seen him wield ing a rilzor. Another assorts that ho is much annoyed by tho stares of the visi tors to tho prison. None of these statements aro true. Mr. Pettit would naturally feel averee to being stared at by everyone passing through tho prison but Le is not subject to suoh annoyances, Warden French has considerately signed him to work in a room that is rathor obscure and is not on tlio route taken by those who pass through tho prison, and not ono visitor in 1,000 catches even a glimpso of him.
Ho can do double tho amount of work assigned him and earns
