THE NAMES OF THE POLITICAL PARTIES To Tho KdltorThi Journal.
^uuiiuii.
Please g1ye the names of he two lead-
ing political parties which luive leer. in existence, which opjmsed eacli other mil which controlled affairs since the formation of the government. T. C.
In 1789 Washington was elected President as Federalist. The npjxisition were known as the Anti-Federalists. In 17!3 AVnshinpton was re-elected liv the same party. The opjiosition i«trty

the Keptibliean, with George Clinton as its candidate. In lTUti .lolin Adams was elected as a Federalist with Tliomas JelTerson as the leading oppos ing candidate avd known as a Kepublican. In 1800 Thoiuiis JelTerson was elected as a liepublican over John Adams. Federalist, and was re-elected in 1804 over Chas. C. l'inckney. Federalist. In 1808 James Madison, Republican. was elected over C. C. l'inckney, Federalist, and was re-elected in 1812 over DeWitt Clinton, Federalist. In 1S16 James Monroe, li*piblicau, wis elected over Kufus King, Federalist, and re-elected iu 1820 over John Qnipcy Adams, Opposition Kepublican. In 1824 the candidates were all Republican and John Q. Adams. Republican, was elected by the House of Representatives, over Andrew Jackson. Win. H. Crawford and llenry Clay. Republicans. In 1828 Andrew Jackson was elected as a
Jemocrat over John Q. Adams, Republican. and was re-elected iu 1832 over Henry Clay, Republican. In 1830. Martin YanHuren, Democrat, was elected over Wm.H. Harrison. Whig. In 1840 Wm. H. Harrison. Whig, was elected •ver Martin VanBuren, Democrat. In 1844 James K. Polk, Democrat, was elected over Henry Clay, Whig. In 1*48 Zachary Taylor. Whig, was elected over Lewis Cass, Democrat. In 1852 Franklin Pierce, Democrat, was elected over Winfield Scott, Whig. In 1850 James Buchanan. Democrat, was elected over John C. Fremont, Republican. In 18G0 Abraham Lincoln, Republican, was elected over ,T. C. Briekinridge,
Democrat, and re-elected in 18G4 over Geo. B. McClellan, Democrat. In 1808 l". 8. Grant. Republican, was elected over Horatio fjeymoi.r, Democrat, and re-elected in 1872, over Horace Greeley, Democrat. In 1870 R. R. Hayes. Republican, was elected over Samuel J. Tiklen. Democrat. In 1880 James A. Gartield, Republican, was elected over W. S. Hancock, Democrat. In 1884 Grover Cleveland, Democrat, was elected over James G. Blaine, Republican. In 1888 Benjamin Harrison, Republican, was elected over Grover Cleveland. Democrat, ft will thus seen that the Federalists were in power twelve years, tho old Republican party twenty-eight years, the Democratic party twentyeight years, the Whig party eight yeare, and the new Republican party twenty, eight years. The issues that Divided the parties would till volumes.
WHERE THE SURPLUS WENT. The Democrats are hard to please. When there was a large surplus in the treasury they denounced it as '•demoralizing-' and "debauching." Now that tho surplus has been reduced they denounce Republicans for reducing it. In their criticisms of Republican manage ment they do not mention the im|Mirtant reduction of the National debt which has been effected during the hist two years, l'or the year ending June 30, 1 H'.IU. the reduction was 8105,UUO,OOU, and by the end of the present fiscal year, §101,000,000 more will have leen cut off. Tho debt reduction under the present administration foots u]^ nearly $240,000,000, involving a gross expenditure of $270,000,000. If this much ol tho National debt had not l»een paid by Republican management tli4 surplus today would, of course, be very much larger than it was a year ago. In other words, if the money in the Treasury had been allowed to lie idle during the past year alone, instead of lieing put fortli to stop interest and save an average of two per cent, a month to the jieople, there would be a large surplus on hand to-day, notwithstanding tlio heavy appropriations and reduced receipts
THAT was frank statement made lntbe Indianaixjlie Sentinel concerning the position of lion. Joseph E. McDonald during the war. Tho Sentinel says:
More than once be stood like a rock amid a tempest of popular fury, for what ho believed to lie true and right. During the war ho was one of the great conservative forces in his party, and did as much as any other man to save it from the dishonor in which a few reckless and misguided men sought to involve it.
This but confirms the statement of THE JoriiNAi. that the course of Mr. McDonald in keeping Governor Morton informed of the maneuverings of the Democratic party enabled the Governor to thwart their treasonable resigns and thus avert b'oodshod in Indiana. If the Sentinel had named some of these "reckless and misguided men" it would have mentioned Daniel \V. V«Hrhee« as one of them and Thomas A. Hendricks as another.

Interstate Commerce Not Involved. iNiiiA.NWrou-, Ind., June —One o) the judg of the Indiana supreme court in explaining the decision in the gas-pumping case said that the whole decision was simply upon the power ol the legislature to regulate the pressure of gas, and was no decision of the question of interstate commercial relations. If the Chicago company wants to pipe the gas to Chicago at the maximum pressure fixed by the legislature it can do so. The company has no vested right and under the police power the state can make any regulation for the safety of its citizens.
