Lawless Grew Stone Frank Baker for Capturing Onion ThieveB. Frank linker sujieriutends tlio truck garden of Deinas Gilbert, which is jufit cast of the city, lie is constantly troubled by half grown boys and young men who enter the garden and steal tlio egetables. Two young follows have been particularly troublesome, and yesterday afternoon Baker suddenly swooped down upon them and effected their capture while tlioy held tho stolen goods in their liandB. He started with them up town and tho young fellows went peacefully enough until near tho Junction when they met with a largo crowd of young men who ltelonged to the samo band. They called to these toughs for help and it was forthcoming in

time. Thoy gathered up stones and following Baker up jiolted him most mercilessly. The two prisoners lx'gan to struggle then and llnally one of them escaped, linker easily managed tho itlier thon by holding him lietween himself and the stones and thus brought him into tho realms of civilization and very soon to Oilbort'8 bakery. Here he was turned over to Officer Grimes to whom ho gave tho name of John Me Curdy. He was released finally because of his lamentations until' tho authorities can decide what to do with him. Baker was wounded most cruelly by tho stones which had been thrown, his arms and body being covered with black and bluo bruises. The whipping poBt is too good for tho young hoodlums who terrify all respectable people in the vicinity of the Junction.

Friendship Lodge Takes the Bit in Its Teeth and Outs Up Generally. Saturday
WIIB
a day of caucusing.
There were caucuses and thore were caucuses. Good Templars were seen in all the by-ways and hedges and all seemto have an object in view. They all looked as though they were going to do something, and, to be candid, they did. Early in the evening the clans of Friendship lodge began to assemble and when the presiding ollicers gavel smashed down on tho desk at the appointed hour for the meeting there were not enough of tho members absent to get up a respectable game of "solitaire.'' Kven Dr. Orillith was present, lookin a little bored, it is true, but maintaining tho appearance of still being boing in tho ring. Some of the members sat looking at the designs on the ceiling, others at those in tho carpet, while still others glared at tho stove with an intensity truly discouraging, while the usual preliminaries wore gone through with and tho deck cleared for action. Everyone know what was coming and when charges of violating the Good Templars' bond were preferred against
Dr. Grillith thore were none of your traditional excited whispers ran around tho room, nor yet any Btartled snorts of surprise. Evoryono crossed his logs and scratched his chin in atnnnner deep contemplative. One or two of the ruder ones winked cloar acroBS tho room at particular frionds and licked their chops in a most savage and suggestive manner. It was "a very solemn occasion" and tho room was so still when Dr. Griffith arose to make his defense, that the mercury in the twenty-live cent thermometer could bo here to drop to tho zero mark, quite audibly. The Doctor made a very ploasant and instructive speech in which he declared ho had violated no bond in testifying that ho knew of no reason why saloon keeper Jake Freed should not open up a knitting room for the ladies of New
Market. He vas testifying on oath, and knowing nothing againBt Freed'H character was constrained to say so. When the docter hnd finished lie was escorted to the anto room and placed in charge of his staunch friend Win. Steele whom he is suing for pulling his log and damaging his eye sight. Others then aroso to speak against the Doctor and some very moan things wero said about him too. Tho chnrgoB made wore Iwth grave and sweeping nnd quite look tho
Doctor's breath, so much so in fact that at the ond of tho third speech ho went out after fresh air. When all those caring to do so had roasted the Doctor's bacon to tho edification of all present and thoir own great satifaetion, a vote was taken 011 the matter and the Doctor was declared expelled, tho necessary two-thirds vote being on hand with some to spare. As it was then about, midnight a fow hymns wero sung and the faithful adjourned to their several beds doubtless to dream of having tho
Doctor hovering over them sawing off nrms and legs in reckless profusion. Dr. Griffith declares tho action of Friendship Lodge a travesty on justice anil will appeal the case to tho Grand Lodge whore he thinks it will bo promptly reversed.
THE GHOST ON SHAWNEE.
A Marveloas Btory of the Doings of a Weird Apparition at the Ohurcli Once In Oharee of W. F. Pettit.
A woird but interesting story of a ghost that frequents tho Methodist church at Khawnee Mound is going the rounds of the press. It was iirst seen, so tho story goes, shortly after tho conviction of l'ettit but everybody scoffed at tho few sho claimed to have seen it. But in the course of a month its visits to the "ghost walk," a path Itetweon the parsonage and the church, were a familiar sight to some of the most reliable citizo.is of tho neighborhood. Quoting tho story: "As many as thirty reputable citizens claim to have seen the uneasy Bpirit, and strangly enough, all of tliam upon various Wednesday nights. Homo tali ove that tlio ghost profers this night to give its uncanny tuusicalos becntiBO it was tho regular prayer-meeting night during 1'ottit's work on Sliawneo Mound while others believo it because tho verdict of tho murder was made up by tho jury upon Wednesday night. Jonathan Meharrv thus narrates his experience with the spook: 'It

proached tho Shawnee' church on my way home from Wingate. I was tired and 1 expect dozing a little on my Boat when, directly in front of the church, mv horse stopped still, with snort that thoroughly aroused mo. I looked at him and saw" that he was trembling in every limb, his ears wero thrust forward and ho seemed to lie paralyzod with terror by some approaching danger. I raised my eyes and behold that which gavo mo as groat a turn as it did old Bird. Coming directly down the Fred Pettit path to my right, und about 100 yards from tho church, was what looked to mo for all tho world like Hattie Pettit, wearing tho Bimie traveling drees in which she returned from South Bend just liefore her death. My emotions wore strange and indefinite, nnd after having passed my hand over my eyes as if to remove the illusion I became quiet through a fascination whoso power I was unable to shake off, but which rendered my mind wonderfully dear nnd susceptible to an impression of what I saw. 'I had heard of the ghost from others and although I am to some extent a Spiritualist I was wholly unprepared for any such manifestation ns I behold. The ghost came directly down the path directly toward me, nnd I had a remarkable good view of tho features by tho light of tho moon.

just as 1 had often observed her pray silently in services during hor life. There was no token of recognition or oven observance of my presence in tlio glassy eyes which were turned toward me. Arrived at the corner of tho church the Bpirit turned and proceeded directly to tho door. Arrived upon tho tliresliol' sho paused, raised her arms toward heaven nnd wrnng her hands in a supplicating manner. Thi" position was assumed for several sec- i.ids, and thon, as with suddenly received power or inspiration, she pushed open the door, which opened noiselessly, and so closed after her. Almost immediately the midnight air was filled with tho familiar notes of

by old Bird breaking into a long swing ing trot, which soon left the country church and its weird associations far boliind.'
