A I'liOMiN'KNT Republican said, the other day, that the best thought of the country was against a high tariff, and he was right.—•liMtmoHil Item.

If the prominent Republican mentioned above had said that the best Mug wump and Democratic thought of the country was against a high tariff he would havojbeen exactly right. But to include the best thought in the Bopul lictin pnrty is not true.

Ir tlio tariff is not a tax why do the protection advocates boast of the relief given by the abolition of the sugar duty.—Jmliaiuipoli.i News.

And if the tariff on sugar wits a tax and a lax on the ioor man as great as on tlio rich, why was the Xeu-s in favor of retaining the tariff on sugar? And why diil the Democratic party vote solid against the proposition to remove .the tariff from sugar?

WHY should pec pie who own land be favored by the government and those vho do not own any be left out in the cold? asks the Toledo Hlittle. There are 11,000,000 working people in this country, and in their bodies there the possibility and potency of many hundreds of millions of dollirrs' worth of labor. Why not issue money on this stored-up labor, as well as on stored products of labor? If the government goes into the business of loaning money in this way, it must treat all alike and some way will hnvo to be devised for loaning money to everybody. This the logical outcome of the sub-treasury scheme.
