last March of John S. Brown having lost 82G5 through a forged order for lumber being presented to him by a strange woman who appeared at his house on March 14. She brought what seemed to be a genuine order from his lumber buyers in Fountain county and it was promptly paid by Mr. Brown, his order being cashed at tho First National Bank in this city. Two days later he received an anonymous letter telling him that tho order was a forgery and endeavoring to throw him off the track as to the guilty purlieu. Mr. Bfown at once placed the matter in tho hands of tho police who began working up the matter in a systematic way. Last week Mr. Brown was thoroughly satisfied that Mrs. Henrietta Kendal, of near .Tackville, was the lady who presented the forged order. Sho had sold a small amount of timber to Mr. Brown's agent, and in this manner became faniilliarized with the forms of order used. Her order was presented to Mr. Brown for payment by her huBbaDd, and all Mrs. Kendal had to do was to, substitute names and amounts in the forged order and she had it. On March 11 she drove to

Waynetown, arrived in Crawfordsyillo was paid the order, took tho noon train to Covington, paid her tuxes and drove homo again in the evening. It was a very neat scheme but it had its loop holo and through this the officers crept in. Sho had left homo in the morning but was not in Covington, her apparont destination, until the middle ot tho afternoon'. Evidence slowly accumulated until the matter seemed certain and last week tho thing was ripe. Mr, Brown was sick so he sont for Mrs Kendal and her husband to eomo to Crawfordsville. They arrived Sunday and Mrs. Kendal was confronted with tho evidence. She declared that she hiul never seen Mr. Brown boforo and thiit she had spent the 14th of March inCov ington. Mr. Brown, however, declared that he recognized her as tho lady who had presented, the order and thon pro ceeded to describe her maneuvers on tlie day in question. He concluded by stating that he merely wished his money back and would take no legal action ho got it. If he did not he would once institute proceedings against Mr,

Kendal. At this point Mr. Kendal interposed and stated that rather than havajitigation over the matter that and. his wife would pay back the 8265, To this-Mr. Brown assented and,to-day Mr. Kendal and wife came toCrawfordf ville and the mutter was settled, Mr, Brown giving them a statement of thfi facts in which it is. denied that any confession was ever made to him, and they presenting to Mr. Brown his $265. fur as Mr. Brown is concerned the case rests here. He will not appear before the grand jury, nor will anyone at his request. The Kendals stoutly deny their guilt of the forgery and Mr. Brown is inclined to believe that Mr. Kendal was not implicated.

Is Barnum Doming?

There are those in the city claiming to be authority who say that Barnnm'e great show will not visit Crawfordsville this season and will come no nearer (9 tho Hoosier Athens than Indianapolis. It is said that Crawfordsville and Beveral other places in the Stat® were merely billed to keep out the shows of Forepaugh and Bobinson. This may be so but probably is not as the advertising has been more expensive than that which wonld have been required to make a mere bluff.
