TUE Superintendent of Public Instruction has made the semi-annual apportionment of the common echool revenue among the vurious counties in the State. Under the apportionment Montgomery county reports 11,777 children and receives §15,515.63. The county paid into the State treasury 316,952,19, and thus receives 81,406,55 less than it paid. The amount apportioned is $1.32 to each child.
THE fiat paper money in the Argentine Kepublic has so depreciated that to-day it takes SI 9.50 of it to buy a five dollar gold piece. In the United States to-day a man can go into work or place of business and buy a live dollar gold piece with So in greenbacks, national bank bills or treasury notes. On this five dollar gold transaction the difference below liat paper money is exactly $14.50 in favor of honest paper money. The pooplo of the United States prefer to ketp this kind of money, although Senator Peffer and his third party are standing for the other.
THE (otal productions of sngar in the world is 11 billion, 805 million and 934 pounds, of which 7 billion, 255 million and 931 thousand pounds are made from beets, while only 4 billion, 550 million pounds pounds are made from cane. But for tho building np of the beet sugar industry in Eurojxs by protection and bounties the world would necessarily havo been compelled to rely on the cane product and the price would not have been less than 25 cents a ]jound. If wise statesmanship prevails in the United States by£ encouraging the development of our capabilities in beet sugar culture the next generation will see sugar cheap as suit.

Budget of Fresh Intelligence from Indiana Towns.
Old Wotnt'ii Cruelly Whippori. NEW AI.HANY. Ind., May -6.—A case of unexampled cruelty on the part of the custodians of a public charity has developed in Harrison county. Silas Stover is the superintendent of tho Harrison county poor asylum, anil his wife acts as his assistant in the capacity of mutron of tho institution. There ure at the asylum several old \vomen, one of them 74 years old, ami another nearly the same ajje and badly crippled. Superintendent Stover and his wife are charged by these old women and by other women in the asylum ivitli whipping- them in a manner so severe as to cut long gashes in the llesh on. their backs, both bearing the unmistakable marks of the cruel beatings they received. From statements made by the unfortunate inmates these inhuman beatings have been indicted upon quite a number of tho poor old women whose poverty and afflictions have made paupers of them and compelled them to seek homes in the asylum. Stover and his wife were arrested o.n complaints tiled against them and taken to Corydon, the county seat, and given a preliminary examination, and both were held in heavy bonds to answer in the criminal court for their savage conduct There is intense excitement in Harrison county against Stover and his wife, and there is a well-organized band of white caps in that county. Threats are made of visiting the brutal couple, and tho threats are likely to be put in execution. lioth Stover and his wife admitted they had switched the poor old women. A little over a year ago the white caps visited the former superintendent of the asylum, named Deubs, and gave him a terriblo whipping on the charge of cruelty to the inmates.
A Lynching Threatened.
DECATUR, Ind., May20.—Armed men are patrolling the jail yard to prevent tho threatened lynching of Li^e Holland (colored) and Andy I'lckern, charged with the murder of Daisy Reynolds. Miss Reynolds had been teaching school in the colored settlement near Willshire, O. She left home about two weeks ago, telling her mother that she was going to visit her uncle near this place. Not receiving any word from her daughter, Mrs. Reynolds wrote her brother and received the reply that Daisy had not been there. Last Saturday two colored men came to her home with tho information that Daisy dead body was lying in a hut in Jefferson township, this county, ner mother sent an undertaker and a friend to the place directed. The only inhabitants who live near the place are three men—two colored and one white. These men said she eaaio there sick and they cared for her as best they could. Their story was not believed. The prosecuting attorney of this county took the matter in charge and caused t)ie arrest of Holland and Pickern. The body of Miss Reynolds was taken up
Friday and a post-mortem examination lield, when it was found that the girl had been murdered. The preliminary hearing of Holland and Pickern was held before Mayor Reed Saturday and both were held under S5.000 bonds until the next regular term of court. The evidence showed tho girl had been led astray and that she had sought Holland's house in Jefferson township, this county, to be freed from shame by criminal means. Expert testimony showed that medicines and instruments had been used and that Miss Reynolds had died from the effects thereof.
