With a 10 cent levy and an assessment more than double there will be funds amply sufficient to run the schools not only of Indianapolis but of the entire State eighteen months out of the twelve. A NEW farmer's benefit order lias been started in McMinnville, Tenn., and has but two members yet, and is called the "Farmer's Reliance." Its platform of principles is to work hard ten hours three hundred days in tho year nevei come to town without bringing some' thing to sell, and never buy anything without paying for it. The charter members guarantee that every farmer who joins and lives up to its princ'ples will find himself in easy circumstances at the end of ten years. Whether intended as a ridicule wo know not, but tho suggestions us to working and selling and buying, are to say the least of them, good rules to be observed by nil classes, no matter whether they live in town or country. The credit systoin has ruined more men than all other evils combined. It is a tyrant destitute of feeling, and a master that knows no excuse.

ATTOU.VEY GENEUAT, SMITH in reply to an inquiry made by the State Tax Commissioners as to whether or not franchises of railroads, street railways, gas, water, and other companies may be taxed, says the law plainly provides that they shall lie listed. Ho says: A franchise, although not tangible property possesses value, and in some instances forms most inijxjrtant assets of a corjxiration. Tho law very distinctly provides for and contemplates tho assessment of such interests, and it is the duty of the assessor to carefully estimate tho importance and vnlue of tho right of such companies to do business within the State, or certain parts thereof in making up tho return of their property. The tax law is explicit ujion this and needs littlo interpretation. This authority, so clearly granted, and duty so explicitly imposed, should le, if properly enforced, a source of much revenue to the State and municipalities. The right secured under tho laws of the State of railroad companies and of street railway companion dependent upon conditions, are in many instances very valuable and shouid borated at that figure which the law contemplates aii'J fairness would justify.

It should not lo forgotten that the Montgomery County Farmer's Council will hold its quarterly meeting at tho court house next Thursday, and that tho subject of hay-making is to receivo^ thorough discussion by largo number of practical

farmers. Much will be said about the best time to cut hay, and on this branch of the subject a great deal of practical information will be given by hav makers. The subject is ono of great importance, and all live farmers slionld attend tliiB meeting. The JontXAii will give a full report ofthe discussion in its next week's issue.

E. R. Harris, an old and respected citizcn, formerly of this place, died at his home near North Salem Tuesday and was buried at the Dunkardrs church cemetery northjof here Wednesday .Funeral conducted by Elder Win. Hnrslibarger. Uncle Lige, as ho was commonly called, was a good citizen.althoug he belonged to no chnrch.

Terre lluuttt'a Police Wrangle, TEKKK HAUTE, Ind., May 'J-. —There were exciting scenes at police headquarters Wednesday ui^'ht resulting from the decision of .luilge MeNutt ousting the state board of police from control of the force and removing their appointee on the ground that the state police bill was unconstitutional. City Attorney Stlmson and Superintendent of Police Ilavis, having obtained a certified copy of the decree, proceeded to the police otllce and demanded possession, which Superintendent Meagher, the appointee of the state uoard, refused. They then proceeded to tnke possession of the forco any way, calling upon the patrolmen to announce their adhesion to one side or the other. In.response to this appeal all of the democratic patrolmen, with two republicans, ranged themselves on the side of the state board, while the other republican patrolmen went with tho city board. While the wrangle was in progress one of tho attorneys for tho state board caused the issuance of a warrant from a justice of the peace against City Attorney Stiiuson ml Superintendent Davis for interfering with the police department, and they were arrested by a constable and taken before the justice and held in bonds. While this was going on Patrolman Goodpasture caused the arrest of Superintendent Meagher for assault and battery. Therefore, Terre

EVANSVII.I.K, Ind., Mny 22.—John Temple, colored preacher, aged about 33 years, came here a few days ago from St. Louis, in company with his wife, to visit relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Temple were in the habit of fighting more or less at home, and Tuesday evening they got into trouble at the residence of the former's moth-er-in-law, on Fulton avenue. The reverend gentleman was attempting to strangle his better half when her screams attracted Warren tiray, a colored man, to the scene, tiray promptly interfered. The preacher turned his attention from his wife to the peacemaker. A fight ensued in which Oray was struck a deadly blow on the head with a fence picket. Realizing the seriousness of what he had done, Temple fled. His victim died at an early hour Wednesday morning. Detectives scoured the city unavailingly for the murderer all day. At night the criminal went to the sheriff's house and gave himself up. He is now in jail and pleads self-defense.

Impersonated Showman* IN'DIANAPOI.IS, Ind., May 33.—Charles Hays was arrested Wednesday at Terre Haute and jailed hero Wednesday nigliL 11 ays has been going over the state representing himself asRattinger, the advance agent of John Robinson's show. Learning Rattinger's route, he would go to the post office, call for mail, contract for feed, supplies, engage hotel quarters for the circus [people, have their own bills charged up, leaving orders for tickets, and borrow money wherever he could. The real Rattinger came into the state the other* day and struck Hays' trail. Detectives were put on his track and he was run down. The charges against Ilays are forgery and violation of the postal laws. He was unable to give bonds and his prospects for an extended stay in Jeffersonville are good.

Shooting Tournament at Indianapolis. I.VDIANAI'OI.IS. Ind., May 23.—In the shooting tournament Wednesday David 13. Palmer, of Bast Lynn, 111., won the gold medal offered by Detroit firm in the grand merchandise shoot. The largest run was by Dennis, who scored forty-nine consecutive birds, giving him an average of 59^ per cent In event No. 18, with twenty-eight entries, the winners were Dennis, Elliott O'Neill and Jones with perfect scores. The prize money for event No. 14 was divided between Spencer, Atkins and Voris. The winners of No. 15 were Kngland, Atkins and Schich of No. 16, Spencer, Skinner, Elliott and Voris: of No. 17 I'almer.and of No. 18 Dennis, ark, Voris, Schich, Allen and Hayes.

Secretary Foster made a statistical report showing that there are 581 lodges in the state, an increase of fifteen during the year. The active members number 502.
