Learning to Ride.
A number of young ladies of this city are learning to ride the bicycle in Elston Hall. Eastlack»fe McKeen are in charge mil are giving the girls all the necessary pointers. Do not bo surprised to see some of them 011 the street with their wheels bofore long.
The DePauw Quartet at YountBville. The DePauw Quartet Company, of the School of Music, DePauw University, coin]osed of H. L. Maxwell, II. L. Miller, W. O. Seanion and C. H. Dixon, will give a concert at Yountsville next. Monday evening. The proceeds will lie applied for the benefit of the Methodist church. Anew and interesting programme will bo presented and the more announcement that Harry Maxwell will sing is sufficient to draw a crowded house.
An Old Orawfordsvillian.
The man of the hour and railroad circles in Chicago is Thomas O. Osborn, tlio projector of the railroad which is to be built through from the United States to Bolivia, South America. Tlio metropolitan dailies are devoting much space to discussing the man and his wonderful work that the talk lias brought to memory tho fact that Mr. Osborn bcgr.n his life in Montgomery county as a school teacher. He wielded tho gag with-telling effect near Whitesville for some time and then afterwards came to Crawfordsville where bo began to practice law with George Hurley, and fin ally wont" to Chicago. Ho made largo sums of money during tho war and entered the railroad business. He has just returned from protracted trip to South America and is preparing to begin tho great railroad which is to bo 0,000 miles in length.
Tor Breach of Promise.
Tho literary society, of the A. M. E. church, last evening indulged in an interesting trial for breach promise. The plaintiff was Miss Bessie Williams and tho defendant Jimmio Johnston. Col. Courtney and Albert Miller appeared for tho lady and J. K. Hanna for tho defendant. Tho testimony was rather of a sensational character and provoked much merriment, tho fact being developed that tho plaintiff was engaged to marry no less than four young men on on one day, exclusive of tho defendant. To got around this defense Col. Courtney declared that tho defendant was a hoodoo and had hoodooed all the witnesses into giving false testimony. In the light of this tho jury was composod of Tom Nicholson, Harry Duckworth, Billy Brown, Hogjaw Doherty, Upton Keone and others returned a verdict of guilty, and sentenced Jimmio to bo hung by the neck until cold.

THE MAYOR DECIDED.
The Dead Lock In the Council is Broken By Mayor Oarr Taking a Hand. Thiro was an interested knot of citizens assemblou in front of the city building last.evening as the hour drew nigh for the assembling of the local legislature to wrestle with the dead lock on the question of the election of Street Commissioner. The Couneilmen were bunched around caucusing and Mr. Yanarsdall was the center of attention. I The adherents of Mr. McDaniel evidently balioml ho could bo won to tlmir side ami were pumping him hard. Mr .Tones had his eye on him, however, and gave him an occasional song which seemed to clear the clouded skv. It was believed by the audience that the dead lock would still continue and when approached on the question of the outcome of tlio meeting one of the Council111011, not too choice in his selection of

the balloting coin-

The Mayor then asked the City Attorney if he could not slop in and break lip the monkey business and Mr. Brusl consulted the statutes to see. Anothor ballot was taken and resulted in a tie and then the Mayor looking up from his constitution said: "I will allow on more ballot prepare your ballot for tho thirtieth vote." The ballot was taken and was a tie and tho Mayor said: "I had hoped this matter could bo settled without my intorposing. It seems not so I shall exerciso rny right to vote.
Ho voted and tho clerk called out "McDaniel four." "Mr. McDaniel is duly elected" announced the Mayor and elected he was.
After tho Council had adjourned Mr, Brush showed those interested tho sec tioiis of the revised statutes which gnvo tho Mayor the power to vote. Section 3013 states that the Mayor and coun'cilmen shall constitute tho Common Council, and section 3090 provides that in all-cases of a tie vote in tho Common Council the Mavor shall cast the deeid ing vote.
