Tire JOURNAL is always willing and anxious to print communications from its readers on any subject of general interest. This week appears tlie ideas of Willis Jackman on raising sorghum. Let us hear from other farmors giving practical suggestions on any topic.
Dnnixo the last twenty-five years the people of the United States have paid to England the enormous sum of $-100,000,000. for tin plate. During the next twenty-livo years this $400,000,000 and more will le kept at homo among Amer ican tin manufactories. S
THE Tndiana])olis Heiitnitl is kept busy these days in defense of the now tax law. Being its godfather of course it must necessarily show up the nefar ious measure to the best advantage, When tlio people come to pay their public dues next year they will have a practical demonstration that Democracy a tax.
HF.I'OUM in taxation and economy in the expenditure of the money paid into the treasury, is the great issue before tho country. -Fviiul-fint Crrst'unt. les, that will be the issue in Tndian next year when the late lamented Democratic Legislature will bo called to ac count for its "reform in taxation and its economy in tho expendit nri' nf moi paid into tho treasury.
Tin: sanitary conference soon to bo held at Indianapolis will be a most val nable meeting to the State of Indiana and tho various counties who are enterprising enough to be represented. The Montgomery county commissioners should not hesitate to allow our county health ollicer enough money to pay his expenses while in attendance and wi trust they will not.
Tin-: Democratic press is toeing the chalk line in defense of tho new tax law, The Revifir, for instance, says it is tho •'best and fairest ever enacted." The IndianajKilis Svnlin.pl, the Democratic Stato organ, extols the benefits and blessings of higher taxes on real estate, and declares that "under the new law, in brief, the FAIIMEU, the WAOK BAHN-EH the SMAI.I, THAIJESMAN. RAISING SOR&HPM 0ANE.
To the F.ditorof The Journal. Being a manufacturer of sorghum molasses I have leon asked bv so many !Krsons what is the best mode to plant, ultivato and harvest sorghum enno. I have concluded to answer all who may !e interested in the sorghum industry through your valuable paper, and give what I conceive to be tho best mode.
the
Allow me to add my tribute to efficacy of Ely's Cream Bnlni. I was suffering from severe attack of influenza and catarrah and was induced to try your remedy. The result was marvelous. I could hardly articulato, and in less than twenty-four hours tho catarrhal sy mptons and my hoarseness disappeared and I was able to sing ri heavy role in Grand Opera with voice unimpaired. I strongly recommend it to all singers.—Wfrt. rf
Hamilton, Loading Basso of the C. D!
In the first place the soil ought to be either a wuulj' loam or light clay, and it should never bo fertilized' with manure of any kind. Just proceeding the crop lover sod is the best for sorghum. The ground should be broken early in tho Spring mid let lay until tho season or ime for planting, which depends on the iriet-y to bo planted. If the Early Amber variety is planted the last week in May is early enough. If Orange arioty, which is very late, should bo planted early in May. Tho Amber is the earliest and tho Oraugo is the latest kinds, and other varieties between the above dates, .lust when tho seed is to be planted the ground having been plowed as above stated, then it should be thoroughly stirred and pulverized until it is in a high state of cultivation, in order to insure a good stand and make tho crop easily tended.
Tho proper time to harvest tho crop is when the seed is well matured. The cane should nQver be bladed, topped and loft standing uncut but short time, but ought to be cut down to avoid fernit-utation. Tho two varieties mentioned above are in my estimation nbout as good as any.
With my little experience the above are my conclusions on the sorghum in dustry. Furthermore I would caution everyone to cut the cane as near the ground as possible, not to leave the spur root on tho stock as they are injurious to the syrnp.' One inch at the ground contains as much strength in juice as one foot at tho top. Would also advise all to save the cane seed, as one bushel is as valuable for seed as a bushel of wheat. WILLIS JACKMAN.
A Sanitaiy Conference.
This is an age of conventions and conferences, and therefore an age of great diffusion of knowledge. Dr. Taylor informs UB that on June 11 there will bo held at Indianapolis a sanitary conference to bo composed of county and city health officers from all parts of tho State. Ideas will bo exchanged for tho benefit of all, but the principal object is to make tho methods of these important officers uniform throughout tho Stato. County Commissioners will be asked to defray "tho .expenses of the county health officers while attending and it is hoped to make it in future tho imperative duty of such officer to attend tho conferences which will bo held annually.

STATE NEWS.
The Latest Intolligenco Tolographod from Indiana Towns.
Ousted the Stnte Tollro l'oroe. TKUKR HAUTE, 1 ml., May 20.-Jiultfc. MoNutt in the superior court on Monday held the state police bill passed by the last legislature applying to Terre llaute unconstitutional for two reasons. The first is because of the five-" year residence clause on the eligibility of members of the police board, which the court holds is a violation of article of the bill of rights, which provides that one class of citizens shall enjoy rights to which other citizens are not eligible. The second reason is because of the clause dividing the police force equally between the two parties, which tho court holds is a violation of the same article of the constitution. The do-, cision is in the nature of an ouster on tho state police force and the old heads of the city police will resume charge at once unless a stay is granted pending an appeal, which is doubtful.
The decision was awaited with the greatest interest and will likely be the end of the complicated police muddle which has been existing here for several months.
