A Band,
The meeting of the local musicians ast evening to tako steps toward the organization of a Crawfordsvillo band was not fi decided success. There were several in attendance however and it was resolved to organize and the matter of uniforms was discussed. There will be another meeting Friday evening at which it is hoped thero will be a larger attendance.
A Loat Girl.
Mattie Hunt, a six year old, did not come homo from Sunday school last Sunday and thereby alarmed her parents very much. They looked every where for her and finally Jennie Kelly I found her at the homo of 0. N. Malsbury Ion east Wabash nvenuo beyond the railroad. She had accepted an invito tion from one of her little friends to dine there and was having a very line time all unconscious of the anxiety nhe I had caused.
A Distinguished Visitor.
Judge Michael Brown, of Big Kapids, Mich., is in the city to-day the guest of C. M. Travis. Judge Brown was a studeut in Wabash college in 1 Mil-OS. Ho threw aside his tool.* mid hi rnr,\vi President Lincoln's (ill for 300,000 more enlisted rs a ii\at in '.he Second Indiana Calvary ui v. ,if), iej.in.ent he served until it was luus'.ii' 0 oat at the close of the war. Upon l. return to civil life he entered the Michigan University and graduated in 18G8. He loI cated at Big ltapids iu that State whoro
IU has become a noted member of the bar and a distinguished jurist. He is prominent Grand Army man and iu 1889 was the Department Commander for tho State of Michigan.
His Name Is ones.
Tho sheriff of Parko county, Mr. .Tones, arrived in tho city this morning from Kockville and returned at once with I Tadie King. Jones stated that everybody down in Bockville insisted on Tadie being given the liberty of the city.
They further insisted that Tadie was a poor, abused boy, who had been downtrodden by the tyrants of Montgomery I county. This was all very pretty but sheriff Jones is now considerable out of pocket by his child like trust nnd one I would suppose that ho would have to much sense to try to wrestle with a mule.
It seems not, however, as ho took Tadie back without hand cuffs. An experienced office would have tied tho thug ucck and heels and locked him up in a coal I box.

It is very important in this age of I vast material progress that a remedy bo pleasing to tho taste and to tho eye, onsily taken, acceptable to tho stomach and healthy in its naturo and effects. 1 Possessing these qualities, Syrup of

ABB LKVIXBON.
The new Ctuncil held its first regular meeting last evening with all members present and looking exjxxjtant. Thore was considerable caucuBsing about the corridors Ijeforo tho ball opened and it was pretty evident that some people were interested in tho proceedings. After tho reading of tho minutes the Mayor proceeded to road tho following committees which ho selected to servo the eusning year:
Judieiarv.—ltoynolds, Vauarsdal and Walter. Petitions and Overtures.—Scott, Jones and Smith.
Ordinances.—Walter, Smith and Vauarsdal. Finance.—Scott, Jones and Smith.
Printing and Stationery.-- Ynnarsdal, Keynolds nnd Walter. Schools and Public Buildings. —Smith, Walter and Jones.
Electric Lighting.—Jones, Scott and Keynolds. Water Works.—Ynnarsdal. Smith and Scott.
Accounts.—Jones, Scott and Smith. The Board of Public Improvements announced that Keynolds had been selected as its cliairmnn for tho ensuing year.
A petition from a number of citizens was read asking that a sidewalk be laid in front of several lots in the F. M. Boyland addition on east MarlM^treet. It was referred.
Another petition signed by a large number of citizens asked that a marshal bo appointed to guard life and property in the southeast quarter of the city. An officer is badly needed there and it is to be hoped ono will be appointed when tho petition comes to a vote.
The Clerk read the report of the installment of O. C. Dorsey as Chief ol the Firo Department, which was accepted.
The police board then submitted a report which was accepted. It recommended that the present officers, Broth ers, Grimes and Connors be re-elected. On June 1 Brothers is to begin as night policeman and serveone month to b»followed tho next month by Officer Grimes as night police, and that they therefore alternate as day and night police to re ceive ?50 a month while serving at night and Sf0 whilo in day service. Conners is to rive lis niplt policeman constant ly at a salary of $50 per month.
Fire Cl.ief Uorsoy recommended that Frank 'MoNecley be elected his assistant nnd Doc CVriK'n driver. The recommendation was i.etid upon favorably.
Tho Mayor mu.mnced that tho old committee on thi.- Itclric light plant Keynolds, Jones und Scott, would be contined. He also announced that school trustee Campbell had informed him that the trustees had on hand enough money to pay off the principal on two of the school bonds, each of which is worth 81,000. The matter was roferred to the finance committee.
An ordanance regulating the salaries of city oHiciau was road and passed. It regulated the salnries as follows: Members of the council on the Board of Public Improvements 8150 members not on that board 8125 Mayor 8720 with fees Clerk 8600 with fees Marshal 8H00 with fees Treasurer 8400 with fees City Attorney 8300 with fees: Civil Engineer §250: street commissioner $2 per day for the time employed Chief of fire department, two assistants and regular fireman 850 per month night police 850 and day police 800 minute men of fire department sleeping in building 810 yer year not slooping in tho building 8:10 per year day jal tores 15 cents per hour. Those saluries are the same paid last year except that of city civil engineer which is cut down 8100 as the work done was not considered worth 8350.
A resolution was read and ndopted which ordained that tho parties who should do the work on the city's electric light plant should bo a chief engineer and electrician, his assistant, nnd a trimmer. Tho chief is to receive 860 a month for tho first six months, the assistant 840 a month, and the trimmer 810 a week. These workmen are to bo under control of tho electric lighting committee of the council. It was decided to le»ve it to the discretion of tho committee as to when tho salaries of these men should begin. The committeo recommended that John Conrad bo elected chief engineer, Ed AmeB, assistant, and. Frank Pruitt, trimmer. Councilman Yanarsdal nominated Doc Irwin for trimmer, and Smith, Mat Brandenburg, for assistant. Conrad was elected by acclamation. The vote on assistant stood Ames, 5: Brandenburg 1. Ames was declared elected. Tho first ballot on trimmor Btood Pruitt, 3 Irwin, 3. The second resulted likewise as did tho third, fourth nnd fifth. Tho Mayor thon cast tho deciding ballot for Pruitt, as it was ovident the tie could not be broken, Pruitt was therefore declared elected. A proposition wns rend just beforo. tho balloting from John Coylo. He proposed to run tho plant, paying all the expenses except what might be caused by accident, tor 84,000 a year or 833/, per light.
