Leeke in Town.
Leeke and Cherry is the name of a firm engaged in the elevator business at Advance and Lebanon. John Leeke, the senior member engaged in Chicago speculations and of course lost, running the firm in debt several thousand dollars. Ho skipped Lebanon and the places that knew him, knaw him no more. He appeared in Crawfordsville yesterday as big as life and was evidently enjoying himself hugely when he was recognized by Bert Garner, a college student from Lebanon. Mr. Garner informed Marshal Ensminger at once of Leeke's presence, but the telegraph office was closed and it was impossible to get .word to Lebanon. As this was the case and the police had no authority to hold him. Mr. Leeke had his own sweet way and left last night.

tions In Begard to the Police Force. The council meeting this evening promises to be an interesting one and among other things the police force will receive a little regulating. It is altogether probable that the present force will be selected but in regard to the question of duties there promises to be some radical changes made. At present the day police receive 860 and are not on duty as long as the night police who receivd but S50. The council, promises to change all this at to-niglits meeting and adopt the practice of equal time at equal pay. It is not at all probable that the salaries will be raised to SCO all around but a uniform salary of S55 will most likely be the thing. As to duties, the night anil day police will alternate the present day police serving half time at night and the present night police doing day duty half the time. This is the programme at present and some other clianges made also be made but if anything is certain it is very close.
Wm. Vanarsdal has withdrawn apparently for the race for the office of street commissioner and is supporting Tude Hamilton whose chief opjxjnant is Hal McDaniel. Tude Hamilton claims to have a majority already but we will wail until the votes are counted before announcing the result. It might possibly pan out like that vote on the Board of Public Improvements.
Badly Scared.
Yesterday afternoon at Kirkpatrick just as the people were leaving the church the horse of Newton Johnson be came frightened and gave a lunge and jumped into the buggy of Wm. Kitz miller. The latter buggy contained Mr. Kitzmiller and his family. Beyond the breaking of the the shafts of Mr. John 6on's buggy and breaking the top of Mr. Kitzmiller's vehicle no damage was done. The occupants of both buggies, however, were badly scared.

The Senior and Junior ladies of the city high school gave their annual field day exercises in the presence of about 100 married ladies who assembled for the purpose of witnessing the festivities and so loudly encored the contests that the noise reached town and all the men in town, who had been cheated out of the secret, started out on' the run. 7"hey arrived too late however and ar rived just after the high kicking match which was the last thing on the programme. An ampetheatre had been arranged and from this were witnessed by 100 ladies and no men contests in nin-j ning, jumping, kicking, fast talking besides an exciting hnrdle race. It was a georgeous sight but no men were allowed in the woods.
M&lachi and the Maid.
Frank Seaman, who lives on Spring street, came into the Mayor's office this morning in no good humor. He swore out a warrant against Mary George, who was released from the county jail last Saturday morning. This loving couple whose amours in Malachi's father's barn caused their incarceration, in the first place, proceeded to look around! for another roosting tree. By chance they learned that Frank Seaman and wife were awav on a visit and as chance! would also have it. the joyous Malachi 1 had a key to the door of the Seaman residence. Thev accordingly went in 1' and passed the night in revelry. By chance again old Coony Scott, the venerable sire of the wayward Malachi, discovered them and when Mr. Seamun came home informed him of the little same. Hence the affidavit, and if, bv another chance, the police run across
Malachi and Mary they will put them in the cooler for another term.
