DEMOCRATS NOT OPPOSED TO A TARIFF TAX. The Democrats who are so opposed to the tariff tax were nil willing and anxious to leave the high tariff on sugar, notwithstanding sueh tax WHS |iaid bv the poor man as largely as the rich. Tho poor use quite as mueh sugar as the rieh and therefore were compelled to pay as mueli tax on sugar as the millionaires but. notwithstanding this faet. every lVmoerat in Congress voted against removing the tariff from sugar. This shows that it. is not any sympathy for the poor man that induces Democrats to keep up a constant howl about the tariff tax. To tax sugar is a British scheme. To take the tariff off of sugar necessitates keeping it on British goods, and this is the secret of tho free trade attempt to keep the tariff on sugar. The Democrats said "let's keep the tariff on sugar and take it off of nails." But

the Kepnhlicans said-'no, let's take it off of sugar because tho tariff oil sugar lia.s failed to start a competition in home production, and therefore we are getting no benefit from it,. Let us put the tariff on such things as will start a home production, make competition, and. as a result lower prices."' This illustrates the difference letween the Free Trader and the Protectionist. The Protectionist wish to put the tariff on commodities wo can really make at home, and thus

encourage home manufactures while tho Free Traders want to keep the tariff on things we cannot raise here, and put all these goods that are manufactured 'in other countries on the free list. In other words, the Protectionist favors putting things on the free list that cannot be cheapened by a tariff and putting the tariff on such things as will be cheapened by protection as were the wire steel nr.ils, steel railroad bars and many other commodities. Free Trade in sugar has given the people cheajier sugar, while the tariff on steel wire nails has broken down the foreign ni(inii)H)ly and reduced the price of nails from 8 cents JKT pound to 3 cents per pound. These practical results demonstrate the soundness of the Kepublican jiolicy. Uv the policy of the

McKinlev bill we get revenue and cheaper commodities by the Democratic policy we get revenue and higher prices. The Democratic plan results in a heavy tax on the people—the Republican plan relieves the peojilo of taxation. This is the difference between the two parties.

The trouble grew out of a controversy over a poeketknife which the l'uekets claimed they had loaued to a man named Henry llall. llall claimed that lie did not have tho knife, and tho trouble was apparently settled. After noon the l'uekets and Hall started homo together, and the elder I'ueket, armed with a club, struck Hall a blow on the head, knocking him down. Assisted by his two sous they beat Hall until liO died. The l'uekets then tied tlio country and came to •l'eter Cooper post office, Urown county, this state, where they wero located a short time ago and arrested. The elder Pucket will have to answer to tho charge of murder and the sons as accessories. I.vniA.VAI'ous, Ind., May 4.—Insoulhern Indiana the wheat now measures 15 inches high. Low spots show some bad effects of too much lain. The late varieties of wheat will do to cut about the 20th of June. Farmers have sold quite freely of their wheat up to the present time and the reserves in I hand are unusually small. Millers' have not more than half enough stocks to carry them through till harvest. In the northern portions of Indiana the late varieties of wheat ought to be ready to cut by tho 1st or the 10th of nly. The growth of the wheat during tho last fourteen days has been unprecedented. Just enough rain and sunshine to bring about these results.
