All who pay city taxes should know that Mayor Carr, Councilmen Scott. The railroad promised to pay the fare but its agent failed to get here in time to do it before they went so it sent the money down to these gentlemen to day and they returned it to the eitr treasury whence it cam®.

These gentlemeu Miss Dela slightly favored in the distribution of dinner giving thein pie. potatoes and cookies in addition to the regular meals. On account of the mean action of the morning, she gave the tramps only the usual fare, which by the way was far Ui good for them. When the tramps jerceived that the others fard lietter than they did. they at once fired their meal and dishes out into the office. When Mr. Gill app.-arid to take them back to work tliev refused to go and stubbornly sat do« non the floor stating that they would not work a lick without first being regaled with pie and jxitatoes.
All persuasion proved in vain and they were finally locked up in a dark cell and tuld that they would be fed on hard bread and water until they would agree to work. Until they do they will not be allowed time and will le obliged to dolti days time before they are released.
A Joru.vL reporter called at the jail this afternoon and was admitted into the awful presence of six as dirty specimens of humanity as ever graced the marble courts of the Montgomery county jail. Wlu interrogated as to the cause of the trouble the bums were at first sullen but finally unlocked their jaws and howled about not getting pie and potatoes. "Why. diirn it," said the dirtiest one. "we always managed to get all the pie and potatoes we wanted before br simply asking for it at the houses and now when we work its a doggoned shame that they don't give us ice cream and fruit cake, too." "We're free American citizens," howled another, "and we'll sue the Mayor, the sheriff and every haslislinger around the jail for the dirty treatment we're getting here. They aint no right to make us work like a gang of niggers, and you bet we won't until we get to say what we will eat." '•Yon know of course that you can't get out until you've worked for 16 days "No. you bet we don't, but we stay here all summer before we'll work another lick. We'll kick the durned old jail down if they keep us here much longer and you can state to the public that we're a crowd of high toned gentle men who will never consent to subsist on break and water. We'll starve first, (logon our buttons. Good live to you and be sure to tell the folks that we will starve before we'll eat without pie and potatoes.

ARBOR DAY.
How This Pleasant Anniversary Will Be Observed, Next Thursday will be Arbor day throughout the country and will le celebrated by the pupils of the public schools. Literary exercises will be held in all the rooms of a character in keeping with the nature of the occasion. Yesterday in the several rooms a new feature for the day was announced. It is too late in the rear to set out trees, as is the custom in the far West, but all the arrangements will be |erfeeted for such a work Spring. Each class will proceed into the large yard and select a spot upon which to plant its trees next season and the initiatory steps toward raising the money to pay for the trees will also be taken. NOTHING DOFI
A Brutal Husband.
Some three weeks ago a lady residing at Bainbridge left her husband and with her little daughter came to the home of her father who resides in this city on south Elm street. The husband who was left behind had proved himself wholly unworthy of his wife who is a most estimablo lady, and cursed and abused her in a most shameful mannerwhile she lived with him. The husband soon found out what a treasure he had lost and about the middle of last week came to this city and lagged his wife to return wito him. She refused and lie returned to Bainbridge returning Sunday in a buggy. He again craved her forgiveness which was wisely refused. The man went bolting out of the house and drore his horse to the middle of the street where he stopped and called his wife out. She came as far as the gate and he again interceded with her in vain. Finally he lost his temper and poured at her head a most blasphemous volley of oaths which could be heard by the neighbors. The lady retired to the house and the husband standing up in the buggy lashed his horse down the street, beating it in a most cruel manner. In about an hour he returned and stopping in front of the house proceeded for the second time to curse his wife to his heart's content and again lashed his horse into a run. It is proposed by the neighbors to prosecute the man for profanity and cruelty to animals.
