WANTS TO OUTHIS THB0AT.
Eliot Bowman Had the Grip and Now Has to be Constantly Guerded. Eliot Bowman is a young man, aged about 2G years, who lives with his widowed mother near Jackville, a few mileB south west of this city. A week or so ago he was taken with the grip and had a severe eeige of it. The other day ho aroso from his bod for tho first tinio and summoning tho members of the family made a curious declaration. lie said that while he was perfectly rational 011 most points that his illness had brought ii]hjii him an irresistable desire to cut his throat. "It feels very sore," said ho "and 1 think it ought to bo cut. I am fully aware of the precarious position in which my life is placed by this strange desire, and I solemnly admonish you to watch me to seo that I come to no harm. He then requested them to keep from his sight all razors, knives and other instruments with which he could carry out his terrible impulse. His relatives are fully alive to tho situation and keep a constant guard upon him, his every movement being narrowly scrutinized. Dr. J. N. Talbot, of Alamo, is the attond'ng physician and thinks that in time after all tho bad results of the grip have loft him, ho will looe his unnatural de. sire. At present the young man has 110 wish to die, and in fact is as desirous of life as any one, but is merely possessed of an unaccountable impulse to cut his soro throat.
How He Broke the News.
The poor judgment which is sometimes displayed by people in tho breaking bad news received a forcible illustration yesterday. When the little Moran boy was hurt it was not known at first where his mother was, she spending her days out washing. It was finally learned that she was at the home of Hon. B. W. Hanna and a gentleman was

dispatched to break the news of the catastrophe. He arrived nt the place designated and knocking on the door inquired for Mrs. Moran. Being ushered into her presence he made a most courtly bow and said in his most mild and affable tone of voice. "Good morning, Mrs. Moran, your little boy has just been killed up hero 011 the railroad. The poor mother stared at him a moment and then littering shriek after shriek went into hysterics aud finally fainted. When she was brought around her grief was horrible to behold and she rushed frantically about moaning over her great misfortune. Sho was finally quieted by being told that tho boy was not yet dead and might possibly re-
Wanted the Liar.
The other morning as M. W. Brunor sat quietly in his office considering the prospects of tho fishing season and con coctiug some wonderful stories he was aroused from his reverie by tho entranco of a fairy young woman who bolted into the office exclaiming loudly: "Is this Mr. Wright's office "No Madam," was tho severe response. "Where is it V" snapped tho lady. Thinking for tho moment only of 'Squire Wright Mr Brunor dirocted her there, but as ho passed out Mr. Brunei' recollected the O. W. Wright also had an office and called: "There are two Wrights have offices, which one do you want?" "I want tho liar," was tho parting resjionso and Mr. Brunor silently looked at the ceiling and smilled a far off Binile.
Mrs. Charlotte Wynn's Will. Tho will of tho late Mrs. Charlotto Wvnn was admitted to probate yesterday afternoon. Sho leaves $300 in cash to her niece, Sirs. Aluiira Trimble, of New York, and 8500 to St. John's Episcopal church. The latter sum is to Ijo held in trust by tho Bishop of Indiana and its income to go to tho church. Iu case of the church's over becoming inactive the money shall go to other work in this diocere. Tho balance and bulk of Mrs. Wynn's property is left to lior daughter, Mrs. Cornelia Wynn.
A Society Event.
One of tho society events of tho season was a party given by Master Aby Joel for a dozen or more of his littlo friends yesterday afternoon. It was the occasion of his fifth birthday and he received many handsome presents.

A PETTIT REUNION,
Iho Jury to be the Guests of 8hawneo Mound Some Time in the Near Future. We have had soldiers' reunions, family reunions, and old settlers' reunions, but the very latest and most original is a reunion of the Pettit jury. The time has not been set yet but it is to be at Shawnee Mound and we understand under the kindly auspices of the good people of that neighborhood. It will lie a groat occasion of those twelve men who for six long and weary weeks heard so much about Shawnee Mound, "the parsonage," "the church," aud "the girl on Shawnee," to seo them all with their own eyes. Charley Davis is to bo the special guost of the party. Thoy should also invito the ollicers of the court, the reporters and lawyers on Ijoth sides. Pettit himself might be invit-od, although it is a foregone conclusion that ho would decline.
Drunk and Disorderly.
Joe Ward is in jail. Last evening ho and a companion loaded up on bail liquor and started out to do tho town. Swearing and blackguarding they started down the street horrifying and disgusting all who heard them. Marshal Ensininger was put on their trail and finally came up with them in a Market street dive. Ward's companion escaped but he was too drunk and was placed in jail when he will be given tho privilege of cracking rock for a season.
Private Opinion Made Public, iWill Richmond, aB ho was putting tho finishing touches on tho Nadii sign by Dr. Deletion's drug Btoro remarked that tho printing houses would lose all tho poster work in a few years. "Managers are finding it cheaper to hire an artist to go ahoad of tho show and paint the bill boards than to have tho posters printed," I10 said. "I did it for my own show and several others have followed suit."
