FRENCH SUGAR.

France ia now supplying all her home demand for sugar from her own beet sugar factories, and has a very large surplus to export atul much of this surplus is coming to this country. It is reported that large quantities have recently been landed at both New York atul New Orleans. The quantity of sugar produced in the world to-day is double what it would have been had not France anil Germany taken steps, years ago. to develop the manufacture of sugar from beets. There is perhaps no better illustration of the benefits conferred on the whole world, by the encouragement of new industries than the great production of beet sugar in Luropeau countries. The countries which produce it all gave substantial aid. in various ways, to individual enterprise. and persevered in this policy till sugar became so cheap that the poorest classes could secure an ample supply of it. Sugar, the world oven is cheaper by far now than it has ever been before 'in tho history ot the world. And why hits it become so cheap? Because the quantity produced has increased faster than the demand. As great as has been the increase in tho consumption of sugar within the last forty years, means of the increasing production have far outgrown it. And now, suppose the United States shall hold to its present policy of giving aid to the production of beet sugar in this country, who can doubt that it will finally result in a home production of sugar equal to the home demand. And when this result is reached, is it not apparent that the price of sugar must come down much lower than it is now.

TnK Clay Combination Company is now ready to make a canvass for subscriptions of stock. Tho company offers great inducements to subscribers, and there is every reason to believe that the requirtti amount will be subscribed without delay. The raw material for manufacturing an infinite variety of encaustic and all kinds of clay work exists in inexhaustible quantities and Crawfordsville should take advantage of this hidden wealth and turn it to her advantage. A great and flourishing industry is only waiting development and the promoters should receive hearty encour agement.

CLEVELAND haft pronounced against free coinage and Hill against free trade, and yet the next national platrorm will practically indorse both of these heresies, and its candidate for President will have to accept them with such grace as he can contrive to ex hibit.

In a now work entitled "Poets of America," this writer is represented by a very exquisite and tender poem as well as a picture of herself. It is hard to determine which of the two is most to be admired. The subject of the verse is ''The Boy on the Train." Tho coach was filled by the richly attired, the wealthy and the grand. The lad, lean, lank anil feeble played several plaintive airs on his old violin, to which but little heed was given by the aristocratic crowd. Then he doffed his old torn cap, and passed up and down tho serried aisle, yet few were the pence bestowed. Tho train

Ocon

from which tho boy threw himself into the water below, was taken up dead, his hand.sti'.' grasping the violin, convulsed and cold in death. It would be well indeed if all could have opportunity to rend this very pathetic story as delineated in the inimitable verso by Mrs. Moore. We append below tho following as a proffered tribnte to tho merit of this distinguished lady:

Mrs. Kllcn Miiude Moore. I've scanned your picture o'er. •. In "Poets ot America"—us queen—

Mid rivalry, supreme, Your lieauty here Is seen. Ah, dignified and genlel is your mien.

Hut best of all pure thought. From your rich store house wrought, lends with emotions tender and sublime. You paint the human mind. When grievous or unkind. In ilowing measures tersely into rhyme.

Your minstrel boy was sad, Ncgleet dtd drive him mini, Then in despair jumped iioui the bridge and died.

The Jeweled crowd in brief. Tendered no relief. His poor young heart then coidy crucified

Tliink of the colli damp brow. The pulseless form, and how lly sheer neglect a trembling soul was plain.

Still clutching violin. When ail of life within. Had passed the limits of his fragile frame.

Perhaps dire want entailed. Could not be countervailed. His last resource In need cruelly ignored.

The opulent and grand, I.ent not tlie helping hand, Though Imunteous wealth their colters well hud stored.

Who e'er this tale may read. Should hasten to give heed. To Iienury when liugerlugat tho dour,
