WHAT A WORLD TT1S7ANYH0W.
A writer in Forest and Stream calls attention to the fact that mau only wrests with infinite pains from nature the things that he needs, while hurtful and deadly plants and animals increase many fold with all his efforts to ester urinate them. The wheat and corn which with toil and anxiety man raises for his bread are subject to destruction by heat or cold, by wet or drouth, or insect pest. A hail storm may annihilate in half an hour the wheat crop of a year and beggar the farmer. "But neither frost nor hail nor thunder," no, nor nothing else, ever destroys the weeds that make life a burden to the agriculturist. Thistles, ragweed and the unspeakable ox-eyed daisy not earthquakes could do away.
In the animal world the. wild ducks and geese that used to be so abundant have nearly disappeared, but hawks, crows, owls and. English sparrows remain. Farmers and farmers' boys have waged war in America for two centuries against crows and hawks. Yet crow: are apparently more abundant than ever, and hawks are certainly not disappearing.
The gentle quail, which furnishes food for man, starves when the snow is on the ground but the field mouse, that plays havoc with the grain, lives royally under the snow. The same snow imprisons the deer, apparently jnst to let his enemy, the wolf, get abetter whack at him.
So it is throughout—tho things that we want and are good for us wo must work our heads off to secure, and ttien we don't always get them. Tlie things that we don't want and are a nuisance and a pest to us we can't get rid of, though we flight them all the time.
On the whole, what a world it is anyhow! A I.iJlO.

A NICKEL IN THE SLOT.
The penny-ln-the-slot machine is growing in depravity. It has now taken to throwing dice.
Theue are about
12,000
nlckel-in-the-
slot machines ln use in this country and they comprise fifty varieties. A
printer
put a penny ln tho slot of
a machine intended to prove a man's striking power, and then punched the pad offered to receive the blow. The spring didn't work, his wrist was broken, and the jury gave him
$50.
The English postal authorities have introduced pickel-in-the-slot machines for the sale of postage stamps. Tho town council of Iverness has just given permission for the erection of the first machines.
The latest plan for beating the nlckel-ln-the-slot phonograph Is for two men to drop one nickel into the aperture and each hold a tube to his ear. The music, speech or song ground out by the machine then costs them only two and a half cents each.
THE MAKING OF WORDS.
Tin: word "milliner" owes its origin to Milan. Mb. John W. Massey, of Plymouth, Eng., formerly of Philadelphia, writes to the Record to suggest the word ''telovoice" as a substitute for telephone message.
Tue law of evolution works in language as well as in other things. Twenty thousand words have been added to the English language in the department of biology alone since Darwin's discoveries.
The latest linguistic importation from London is tho verb "to finance," which is used to denote the process of furnishing funds for a financial institution. It is rather worse, on the whole, than "suicided."
"Pseudopathv"
and "pseudotherapy"
have been added to the medical vocabulary by Oliver Wendell llolmes. The first of these words signifies tho quack Bcience of disease and the other means the quack method of healing. .......

MiiiIi* a l«nmml for #100,000. IxniANAi'ot.ts, liul.. April X— The old state board of agriculture, through Sylvester ,lohnson. its treasurer, has made a formal demand for tlie 5100,000 appropriated to It a couple of years ago. Auditor Henderson refused to issue a warrant for the money. Mr. Johnson said the demand was made for the purpose of forming a basis for a suit after the new lioanl has been appointed. The secretary and auditor of state have been trying to make up the new board. When the two officers got together to appoint a board it was found that there were four districts without applicants. The men who were willing to serve in three of these districts were found in a few days, but a search for a man in the one vacant district so far has been in vain. The appointee must be a republican and a manufacturer. As soon as si man is found the board will be announced. The time for appointing the board expires Friday.
