GEORGE W. CHILD'S IDEAL. Somebody calls George W. Childs the "kindliest spirit in doing courtesies" that this modern generation has produced. In his "Recollections" recently published is mentioned the Childs ideal of success in business. The millionaire newspaper editor and publisher is not at all of opinion, according to hi* statements here given, that it is necessary for a newspaper to pander to a low public taste in order to be successful. How magnificently he himself has succeeded all the world knows, and the strange part of it is that the more money Mr. Childs gives away the richer he himself seema to become. He has indeed gained "suocess with honor."

Of his idea of what a newspaper ought to be, and what he strove to make of his paper at the start of his journalistic career, Mr. Childs says:

I worked hard to make the paper aaocoees for several years I seldom left the editorial rooms before midnight, averaging from twelve to fourteen houru a (lay at the office. I strove to elevate itB tone, and I think 1 succeeded. If anked what I mean by this, perhaps I had better quote the friendly words of the late Ilev. Dr. Prime: "Air. Childs excluded from the paper all details of disgusting crime: all reports of such vice as may not be with propriety read aloud In the family, that poison the minds of young men, inflame the passion, and corrupt the heart: all scandal and slang, and that whole class of news which constitutes the staple of many daily papers. The same rule was applied to the advertising coiumM, and from them was excluded all that. In anjr shape or form, might be offensive to good morals."

While the news concerning the relations between the United States and Italy is somewhat exciting, and the situation may be somewhat grave, yet Bffairs are not in such a shape that they cannot be amicably arranged satisfactory to both countries. The New York Snn states the situation in the following crisp manner: "Of course there is not going to l)e war. Italy cannot very well go to war for the purpose of making the United States alter its constitution. There is no rupture, only a little strain. No citizen of the United States is hostile to Italy or Italians. The Mafia is a scoundrelly institution. The United States cannot punish a New Orleans mob any more than it can punish a New Orleans policeman for prig ging a banana from a fruit stand."

AiiE you one of those mythical persons who "never read an advertisement If so you owe it to yourself, The Journal and the advertiser to reform immediately. The advertiser don't pay for his space just for fun. It is to lie supposed that he has something better or at cheaper prices than his competitors who don't advertise, therefore, read his ad act.

The prospecils that soon the splendid Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Central park, New York, will be open to the public on Sunday. Those who fought for music in the park on summer Sunday afternoons had a hard battle before they won their case. The next point of attack was the museum, and now the directors of that seem willing to capita* late. If they do working people will have opportunity to see some of the finest works of art in America.

Lobansport, Ind., April 1. John Roof, Ed Ovtvholser, Charles Kintz and George Hall, lT-year-old boys, were arrested at Terre Haute Friday charged with burglary. The boys said they lived in this city, where they were brought Monday morning and arraigned before Justice Smith. They pleaded guilty to the charge of burglary and were bound over to the grand jury in the sum of S300, iu default of which they were committed to jail. In their possession were found articles of .merchandise which were identified by John Leonard, l-'red lJeeyerand Charles Herning, of this city, whose stores had been robbed lately.
