Henry Villard was born in Spire, Bavaria, April 11, 1S35, hta family name being Hilgard. Ho was educated at Munich and Wnerzburg, came to America in 1853, studied law in Peoria and Belleville, Ills., but finally entered journalism. During the civil war he acted as army corresp on t. There he engaged in the negotiation of American railroad securities, and in 1874 came to the United States, representing foreign investors. HENRY VILLARD,

Pacific railroad. In 1SS4, iu an endeavor to support his properties, he lost his fortune and returned to Europe. He oarne to the United States again in 18S6. In 1888 he regained control of his Oregon interests, but lost heavily in the "slump" of 1890. He married Fanny, daughter of William Lloyd Garrison, in 1860.

Mwt Driltlt Willie Ier»llE«Ml. Indianapous, Ind., March HU.—The body of .Jesse llaehl. who was shot und killed at St. Charles, Mo., has arrived at liis home in this city. Haehl went off about three weeks ago in a lit of mental aberration. Superintendent Colbert, of the police department, has received the details of the murder of llaehl. He was shot and killed on March 17 by .lames W. Hill, who is now under arrest, llili testified before the coroner that he met lkielil on a bridge. Hill's brother was with him. They proposed to keep Huehl from, crossing, and Hill struck him with a "billy." Haehl then turned back. Two tiains passed just then. After the trains passed Hill again ordered llaehl off the bridge. As Hill came near llaehl the latter made, a motion to draw a weapon and then ilill lircd the fatal shot.

Pkkit, Ind., "March HO.—William Pitts knocked Thomas Dixon completely out at his very first blow Friday night in a contest to settle the state colored championship. Pitts has won six fights in succession, the last three of which were from champions. Pitts is now undoubtedly the champion of the state and will, it is thought, hold his honors for some time, as he has proved a fighter so far as tried. Dixon is from Shelbyville, but was trained in Cincinnati, from which city several hundred sports came to witness the fight.

Indianaroi.is, Ind.. March SO.—Steve Curran, of Terre Haute and Tommy Hubbard, of Elmwooi1 light-weights, fought thirteen rounds at the latter place Thursday night Hubbard was knocked out in tho thirteenth round by a terrific right-hander on the jugular.

Indianapous, Ind., March 80.—There was a strange scene at the Christian church Friday night. An old man of G*2, named Henry C. lterg, who had for many years been a monk, formally announced his renunciation of the Catholic belief and was baptized as a member of the Christian church by Re.v. Dr. Lucas, the pastor. Mr. Berg is 02 years old and a native of Germany. Bofore baptism lie made a statement of the causes that led to his leaving the Roman Catholic church. He said that his first doubt arose in 1870 us to the doctrine of the infallibility of the pope. He declared that in the light of the New Testament he could not accept the dogmas of purgatory, transubstantiation, the selling of indulgences and the authority of the papacy.

MlTCriEt.T,, Ind., March 30.—An inquest was held by Dr. Pearson over the body of Mrs. Neideffer, who was murdered in her house about eight miles east of here some time Wednesday. Nearly ail the neighbors were present, and from the evidence given no clew could be obtained to the murder. The verdict was that the wound in her head had caused death and that the party inflicting it was unknown to the jury. The murder could not have been committed for money, as nothing was missing about the house. There will be a meeting of the people of the community to see if some clew can be discovered.

The Wheat Crop.

Indianapoi.is, Ind., March HO.—In southern and central Indiana the winter wheat shows a decidedly more healthy condition than a year ago at this time, except in the warmer sandy lands it shows very little growth. There are some signs of fly, however, which cannot be said to be of a serious nature yet. Fourteen days of growing weather will determine this injury The ground is full of water and for this reason spring work is very backward.

Intiia.vapoi.is, Ind., March 80.—The charge that the water supply of the city is being contaminated by the strawboard works at Noblesville is being investigated by the state board of health. The secretary of the board has secured samples of water from White river at different points between this city and Noblesville and they are now being analyzed.

Found Natural Gm In a Tree.

Lebanon, Ind., March 30.—Workmen in clearing a strip^of woods near here Thursday struck natural gas in a huge oak tree. The presence of gas was not noticeable from the opening, but as the saw plowed its way into the tree tho gas was ignited and burned for twenty minutes. The tree had an eight-inch hollow a distance of ten feet.

I.niiia.vapoi.is, Ind., March 80.—Friday morning the Plumbers' and GasFitters' union, which numbers about 100 workmen, refused to sign an agree ment presented by their employers which gave the latter the privilege of employing non-union men, and as a result were locked out from the shops of the master plumbers.
