Some Ideas on Fruit.

There are many Bubjccts of great importance to tho farmers, financially, socially, morally and every other way that might bo discussed intelligently and beneficially in this single Doge of Tins JOOHNAI) to all the readers thereof. What I say now on tho tubjoct of fruit aud fruit growing in Montgomery county may bring out a discussion of the subject from those who have much more experience than I hav-\

It seems to rae there is a great deal more fruit shipped aud used in this oounly, not home grown, than theie ought to be, both canned dried and in tho natural state. 1 have heard it stated so often that our soil and climate are not adapted to tho fruit growing any more that I liad about adopted the opinion, but upon a closer examination ot the reueons why wo cannot I have 'come to the conclusion that they are not good and sufficient.

First, then, wo have tho soil and the climate to raise any kind of lruit except tho tropical and semi-tropical. There is no question iu my mind about thatIt is not the want of fruit producing qualities of tho soil that prevents a fair yield, half so much as the want of proper culture aud attention at tho proper time.

It is a natural law that the old iu both organic and inorganic life fail to bring forth fruit. The old must sooner or later cease to bring forth aud give way to younger lite.

An apple tree sapping tho ground for 25 years would have about all tho apple food out of that particular spot. Who would attempt to raise corn or wheat or any other cereal on tho same ground for twenty years in succession and expect to got a paying crop especially if ho should fail to cultivate and fertilize to a great extent. If it cm not bo done iu grain successfully, it cau not bo done in fruit.

There ought to be, and cau be, all the fruit raised in Montgomery county that we use or oould use, aud euough besides taken, in connection with the garden to ruu a canning factory six .ntliB in the year from May to November. Let us carefully oonsidor the subject in a financial point of view.

I vonture to say that half tho money spent for tobacco by the people of this county, if properly mvo.stod iu fruit trees and properly planted and cultivated will give us all tbo healthy fruit wo can eat nnd briug into tho oouuty S100,000 ayoar in money. Plant or replant your orchards. Every man who has ground and a voi little money, and if you have not tho money, quit chewing tobacco long enough to buy trees and small fruit. In three years you tan chew the healthiest fruit instead of tho worse than hogish stulT calltd tobacco.

The largest and inoBt profitable orchard in the west is that of Wellhouse & Wheat, near Leavenworth, Kan. They sold from 450 acres 1,200 barrels of apples at $3 per barrel tuaking §36, 000 on appleB alono. Mr. Corser, of Rochester, N. Y., says he sold $66 worth of cherries from four trees and four hundred dollars worth of rasberries have been sold from an acre ol ground.

Why not have a canning faotory aud plenty of fruit. H. M. Penny.

It Is the Kxperlence ot ^Multitudes Of intelligent people that a perservlng use ol Dr. David Kennedy's Favorite Remedy, of Roundout, N. Y. will cure Fever and Ague, Biillousness and Rheumatism, Debility of the Stomach,Rowels, Kidneys, and bladder, and all disorders arising from an Impure state of tho blood, when no other medicine or treatment has been of any permanent benefit.
