The day on which President Harrison signed the bill giving to Philadelphia a new mint bnilding was exactly the hundredth anniversary of the day on which President Washington signed the act for the erection of the original mint building in that city. This was considered a good omen.

Dr. Johnson wrote "When I was running about this town a very poor fettow I was & great argner for the advantages of poverty. Writing of the Panama canal failure, an American who visited the deserted scene of operations says: "Today about all that remains on the isthmus of Panama as evidence of the human greed for gold are millions of pounds of what was once magnificent machinery, but ia now little more than old iron, and theblsach ed bones of tens of thousands of men.'

The British army is 4,500 short, and recmita cannot begot to fill the depleted ranks. An impression has got abroad that "Tommy Atkins" is badly treated and even the jingo who sings about Briton's men and money will not volun teer. If that war breaks out between England and America on account of Canada, or between England and Oer many on the one side and France on the other because of the snub to Empress Frederick, Britannia will be in a bad way.

THE city eleotion occurs on Tuesday May o. Thre councilmen are to be elected, one from each ward. Umler the law under the law all nominations must be made at least fifteen dayB before the election. The provisions in re gard to the appointment of election commissioners, the printing and custody of ballots, publishing notice of the election and the names of candidates etc., are the same as in general elec tions, except that the duties have to be performed by city instead of county officers. The maimer of vot.ng is, of course, the same. The uatnea ol the various candidates will all be printed on t- same ballot and the voter choice will le indicated by stamping the square opposite the name of the ticket for which, or tho name of the in dividual for whom ho wishes to vote.

COMMENTING OU tho report that ex Governor Gordon, of Georgia, has joiued the Alliance, tho New Orleans Picayune (Dem. says: "Sofar as we un dersta'ud tho uprising of the farmers in order to correct many public abuses from which they have long suffered give it a large measure of sympathy and desire to accord it a great deal of support but if their movement is to bo oon ducted by a secret oatli-Lnand associa tion such a oourse will do their cause infinite harm. Tho whole spirit and principle and intention of the American political system are opposed to all seoret conclaves. The idea, then, that a body of partisan?, natlibound to secret doctrines and pledged to work for the attainment of control through seoret agencies and means, is about to take an active part in the manipulation of political power is far from reassuring to thoeo who believe in a government of the people, by the people, and for tbe peotile. It is not reassuring to hear that a strong man like Gen. Gordon has (if he has) joined such a secret organization.
