Notable Feats in Advertising.
Frank Millet, the celebrated painter, was of course an unknown artist struggling for that recognition which the critics are so slow to give even
genius. But besides a talent for mixing colors yomng
Millet had an advertising instinct and it was this which brought him succef». He painted a picture of a lady in black sitting on a red sofa, with a yellow back ground. The efl'oct startled his friends but more than his announcement that he would take it to the «xhibition. To the exhibition it went and the critics simply exhausted thetEnglith language in abusing it. But Millet's point was gained He had attracted attention and always after that his pictures receivspecial attention from the critics who took the credit of his improreraent to their criticism.
A successful advertisement is not necessarily artistic. THE JOURNAL

Bvory effort is made to have The Jocunaii delivered regularly but it is impossible for us to correct faults unless we know of them. Therefore it will be considered a great favor if each subscriber will notify this office immediately of any failure to get the paper, of any late delivery, or of any oomplaint.
How a Oat Stole a Bide.
A pretty Maltese kitten was discovered on tlie west bound train of the Big Four. It was snugly perohed on the trucks of a passenger ooaoh and the efforts of the train men .to drive it out were in vain.
The Compartment Oar.
The oompartment, oommonin Europe is little known in America. But the enterprising rail roads are introducing them and they will no doubt prove to be popular. The Monon has added a compartment car to its "electric train," which makes the night run between Ohicago and Oinoinnati.
Pine Horses.
Wilbur Cooley brought home ten fine horses from the Cambridge Oity horse sale, where 510 thoroughbred Keutuoky horses were auctioned off to the highest bidders. Mr. Oooley's horses are all young and he lias several beauties in the lot, one four year old mare exciting the admiration of overy horseman in the oity.
A Haunted Ohurch.
The latest cold blooded fake from Shawnee Mound is to the effect that the Shawnea ohuroh is haunted presumably by Mrs. Pettit's ghost. The intelligent people of the community take no stook in the story and hoot at the idea. It is probably the story of some silly school boy who returning home after dark was scared by a shadow and thought he saw a ghost.
One Arm Charley Poisoned. Last night Charley Hays, brother of Jamee Hays, landlord of the Hundrix Hotel, came near death's door by taking, as he thought, some wild cherry cordial. The dootor was summoned and on investigation it was disoovered that he had taken an over-dose and was poisoned. Restoratives were applied and he is all right this morning.—Brazil Times.
A UateriDg Establishment-
The candy factory mentioned in Toe Journai Saturday is more properly named a catering establishment as it will furnish everything for parties and banquets. The proprietors are Otto Zeigler and Charles Reimnud, of Shelbyvillo. They claim to be able to duplicate Indianapolis work. Col. Elston has given them an option on the room nntil March 20.
Eagan a Success*
'These looturers are so fur removed from the ordinary stereoptioon entertainments that they should not be missed through a misapprehension. Mr. llugan is a iluont end polished speaker, his oratory being of that charaoter which makes the audienoe forget the man in tho absorbing interest of his reoital. Tho illustrations are shown with photographic aocuracy on a canvas extending from gallery to gallery of the ohuroh, and rising nearly to the oeiling. The soft but brilliant lime light brings out the views with a sharpness of detail, a realism of perspective and proportion, and a vividness of oolor whioh is second only to uature itself."—Buffalo Courier, March 23, 1887.
Tbe Greeu Qootls Man Sentenced. Frank O. Maxwell has returned from Grand Rapids, Mioh., weere he testified in tho i66 of the gentleman who wroto to him in regard to tho purchase of soniM "green goods" last winter and who was overhauled through r. Maxwell's potion in placing tho letter in the hands of the authorities. The man proved to be the old offender, "Punoh" Manson alias Wm. Moyer, who h»s committed every orime known to tho law. He has often been captured but always escaped through bribed jurors or jumping bail until his present offense when the jury found him guilty and sentenced him to three years in the penitentiary. He will bo taken in hand on other charges as soon as his time is up.

A Good Word for Rev Ji G- Campbell and Wife. The Woet Lafayette Heiald lias the following to say in referenoe to the marriage of Hot. J. G. Campbell and Miss Flora Darter: "The marriage of Rev. J. O. Campbell, of the M. E. ohurch, to Miss Darter, of Crawfordsville, last Taosday, was as complete a surprise to his congregation as were the nuptials of his predecessor, the Rev. Olaypool. Mr. Campbell has occupied his present patt rate for the past six months, and daring that time Las made many friends by his zealous work without and within the pulpit. He is a young divine of muoh promise, and his selection of a life-com-panion to assist him in his chooeen profession will bring to him and his new bride the beet wishes and hearty con•atulationa of his congregation. Miss arier, the bride, was born and raised in Crawfordsville, is a member of the M. E. ohuroh ohoir of that oity, and is a cultured and highly esteemed lady. The highly sensational aooounte of the oourtohip and marriage of these two most worthy young people are probably inspired by the dollar-a column country correspondent with whioh the Athens of Indiana is sorely afflioted."
Declamation Oontest.

Town Marshall) Their Dutv and Pay Darlington Marshal, S. M. Miller, is terror to all evil doers both in the city and surrounding oountry, and when A. H. Bowers told him that two men had just left town with olover seed that he believed was stolen property, Roe felt it his duty to follow them up and arrest them if he thought the cir oumstanoee fully warranted it. By so doing he only performed his duty and the fact that both of them are now serving a term in the penitentiary shows how well ne did his duty.
In order to accomplish this he must hire a man to attend to his duty here, hire a livery rig, be exposed to all kinds of weather, day and night, and relv on the charity of the injured party for his pay, whioh, as in tliis case amounts to nothing. For after four days of ird work and an outlay of about $12 the owner of the seed, who had been out but very little, gets his back (about $26 worth) goes down deep into his pocket and hands him the sum of $2, for which he not only receives all he lost but the riddance of two criminals whose damage to the oommunity and country at large cm not be estimated. Who can blame our officers if at times they area little slack in the performance a duty under suoh oiroumstanoee that individuals—county or State—should be made to pay for such work and good pay. That is the opinion of Dabungton PbopxjK,
