AMERIwANS.
ori-ipi siiemine men note particularly the vraut of thoroughness in American education. The truth is we have had so mncli to do 111 America and so short a period in which todo it that we have not had tim for thorough preparation in either scientific or nu-chanical work. The foreigner says that while we are wonderfully talent*! naturally we fail when we go to undertake things requiring mechanical or scientific skill from want of preparation, partly in book knowledge, partly in manual training. The charge cannot be put aside either as wholly coming from foreign jealousy.
Iu Knpland what is called the extension of university education has been devised to mee' the wants of persons who cannot attend school, but who have some leism-j to study ai home. In America the Chautauqua system of instruction mevts the same need to a certain extent. But the ChautanqiLi system does make specialists.
The quesiion is. Why cannot our universities and colleges prepare a system by which earnest students may study at home under the direction ot professors in each branch and get a good education in special brandies? Nobody ought to work with His hands till he is so tired that he ran do nothing but sink into slumber like an ox. The Almighty never meant
The farm boy, the factor}- worker, the meclianic's apprentice ought to carry along with his manual work at least one branch of literary or scientific study. He should think carefully over what he would best like to do in the world, and then select a courso of study that will lead up to it.
It was thus that I)r. Schliemann learned languages ami ancient history thns he prepared to be the great explorer and archaeologist. While an errand boy in .* wholesale store he prepared for future greatness and wealth. Our universities and higher schools do not begin to do the good they ought. They are not in touch at all with the whole people. They ought to extend their work far beyond their own walls, ought to do iheir part toward supplying tho defective education which persons forced out to wrestle with material things at an early age were obliged to put up with. On the other hand, it should be bome in mind by all men and women that anybody, at any age, can learn anything he sets his heart OIL
It is surprising
how foolish Canadians and Australians and even Englishmen will buy our "high priced" agricultural implements when they can get 'cheap" ones at home. Our exports of agricultural implements for five ytars, 1SS5 to 1889, averaged $2,007,213
in 1880 they wero $3,859,181.
The faot is, our agricultural implements are the best «ud cheapest in the world.

HARRIET IIOSMER.
Harriet Hosiner, the sculptor, is a native of Wutertown. Mass., where she was born Oct. 0, 1S !0. Because of a physical weakness she was directed to be much out of doors when a child, and became an expert in rowing, skating and riding, and traveled much alone among the Dakota Indians. She began to model in clay at an early age, was educated at Letiox. Mass., followed a course of anatomical lectures at the St. Louis Medical college and received some art instruction at Boston. Her first work was exhibited in 1S.52 and the year she went to Rome, where she entered the studio of John Gibson, English sculptor. Among her most noted works are the bronze statue of Thomas H. Benton at St. Louis, the Sleeping Fawn, the Waking Fawn, Zenobia, etc. Miss He smer resides at Rome.

ELECTRIC SPARKS.
Telephones are now beiug introduced on men-of-war. Sinm is to have a $400,000 electric railway thirty miles long.
The boom of electricity from the commercial manufacture of aluminum cannot be overestimated.
There are no less than 120,070 nautical miles of cable soaking today in salt water and transmitting intelligence under the ocean fishes.
Xo less than forty-nine miles of electric street railway lines, owned ly five distinct companies, were completed and put in operation in Denver, Colo., last year.
That the storage battery has come to stay is the conviction of some of the soundest electricians in England and America, the opinions of distinguished inventors to the contrary notwithstanding.
The Electrical Age (Xew \ork) prints a two column editorial tending to show- that the Bell telephone patents have expired, so far as theii use in this country is concerned.
A new idea in arc lamps is the substitution of a hollow carbon cylinder for the usual upper carbon point and a disc for the lower rod. The edges of the cylinder and disc are in contact and the light is formed at that, point.
A German scientist applied a mild cur rent of electricity to a swarm of bees, quickly causing them to fall to the ground in a stupefied condition. The bees could be safely handled while in this condition. Xo injury was done to them.
A belt now being made for a Louisiana electric light company will lie the largest iu the world. It is to be six feet wide, 109 feet long, and will take the skins of 175 animals to complete it. When finished it will weigh 40,000 pounds and cost (10,000, or about ?10 a square foot.

.Morton monument, which consists of a pedestal and statue, originally occupied a position in the center of l.'irele park, but was moved to the south side to make room for the soldiers' monument. As the latter occupies a large space and will be about S00 feet high, it makes the Morton statue look like dwarf, and the friends of the dead senator wanted the statue removed to the eapitol grounds, where it would not be overshadowed by the soldiers' monument. Mrs. Morton, however, is not in sympathy with the plan to change the site and will refuse her consent. The state owns both sites and ordered the monument removed.
