THE AYRSHIRE UOW.
The Crawfonlsvillo Butter Factory has sturtml grunt il'sjussion as^) the beet brt'oJ of buttor cows, for it is conceded by all that to make dairying pay nine but gooil lmtter making oona should bo kept. Arnoug the dairymen of Euglaud aud .Soctiaml the Ayrshire cow probably takes iirucedenoe of all others. This breed is thought by some authors to ho a cross between the Alderui.y und the Short Horn, liiuug'v the origin of the breed is weiluigb lost. \Vhilu Robert Burns, the Scotch poet, l'.vcd at Ellis'mnd he carried on dairying with Ayrshire cows. Many incidents are giveii in the books showiug the great yield of butter nud milk from cows of this breed. The mi'k of the Ayrshire breed of cows iB not o: ly abundant iu quantity but also rioh in tliohe substances which constitute excellence of quality, and when with these qualities is considered the small amount ot food consumed the result is so favora bio to this breed that few thoroughly acquainted with the subject will refuse to rank the Ayrshire CJI? among tlie most valuable for dairy purpose?. In a competition at Ayr in .Scotland in 1801 jr a prize ottered by the Duke of Atliol tho average weight of milk per day for two d.iys troai six cows was about fifty pounds, the cows being milked twice a day. The cow which took the first prize gave an uverngo of fifty-seven pounds per day. Ouc of four imported Ayrshire cows owned several years since by tho luto J. P. Cashiug, Water town, Mass., gave in one year :58iU quarts of milk. Tue imported cow Jean Armour owned by H.
Peters, Southboro, Mass., in 1S02, gave an average of l'J pounds of milk a d:»y for 114 days, commencing June 1st and for tue mo ith of July her average was 51 lbs,, 14 oz per day. Her milk for throe days in July yielded six pounds of butter or two lbs, per day. Her live weight at tho oloso of the tiial was 967 lbs. The important fact nll not be overlooked that to breed and to perpetuate profitable d-iiry stock regard must be hud to hardness and strength of constitution and also to such fatter iug tendencies as will insure a profitable return from calves fattened for veal, from steers reared for beef and from cows which having Bervtd their term in the dairy are at last dried of their milk aud prepared for the butcher. The importance of these properties is not sufficiently regarded by keepers of dairy stock in this country. The Ayrshire has proved quite as good for buttor as the Aldeiney, more profitable for milk and much better for beef, so that .she combines all tho good qualities of t'io Aiderney and po.^e ses many t'n good quultities besideu. But, after all, what one wants is a good dairy cow, ratner than bad dairy cow that belongs to a good breed. There are good individual oows to bo found in all breeiiB.and when you find such an one, this is the one to keep and ureed from without regard to the breed she belongs to. The ljest brped of dairy OOWB after all is tho gcod cows. So keep all tiie good cows of all breeds aud fatten for tho butcher all that are not good.
Iu this way we will have none but good d.iiry cowc.

The original bill provided that tho excavation should be seven feet deep and HO feet wide, while the uniended bill permits the work to be begun higher up the, stream aud the excavation to be tive feet at the point of highest elevation. Other bills were passed as follows: Authorizing the establishment of oil pipe liue companies and giving such companies the right to lay pipe lines: authorizing incorporated towns to issue bonds for the purpose of establishing fire departments: reducing railroad passenger fare from three to two cents per mile appropriating S."i7,:i00 for the soldiers orphans' home. The fee aud salary bill, which was so radically amended in the senate, was returned to the house and the amendments read. Many changes have been made in the fee and salary bill iu the senate. Instead of reducing ttie emoluments of the state officers they are larger than ever before, ranging from StO.OlH) to f'JO.OOO a year, though it has been the purpose of tho reformers to make them lower.
