TH£ EFFECT OF THE M'KlNLEY LAW ON ORANGES.
A gentleman of this oity writing to an orange grower ef Florida remarked to him that he supposed he was not in favor of the MoKinloy bill. A few days since he received the following reply: "Yon bet, 1 like that McKinley bill. How did you got it into yonr head that it did our orange growers no good. Under the old law the duty was 25 oents ou sound fruit, and while the raise is not great nominally, the duty is on the entire invoice and gives us about 80 cents protection. The ruling prioe last season was 81 per box on the tree while this season it was 81.50, and in this locality the bulk of the crop was sold at that ligure, the purchaser harvesting his own fruit. As a whole that McKinley bill is what the country needs and I think its practical wosking will show our people that the Democratic howl was purely for political eil'eot and that the deluded will iind it out before two years roll around. That, however, will not effect tlie Southern vote. The "Xig" overshadows all else, and no party but the white man's has a ghost of a show. By law the Governor appoints the County Commissioners, who appoint the elcotion boards—all Democrats. There are seven ballot boxes. "Nig" enn'tread and puts ballot in wTong box and it don't count. "Cracker" onn't read but the right box is indicated and itdooscount. When it comes to the counting it is just what one party sees fit to make. The Demoorats say it is to keep out the ignorant "nigger voto, but it practically disfranchises ail
Republican, white and black, and it is likely to stay so until some new solution of the question is daveloped.
Another company has been incorpo rated to put a tnnnel under the Qudson river at New York. This ne-»v tunnel will begin at a point in New Jersey and pass umler both Hoboken and Jersey City. Then it will cross underneath the Hudson into New York city. It will be a railroad passageway, and branches will be burrowed like mole paths under several of the streets of New York, affording rapid transit to business men living in Jersey. Ii ia more than probable that the present generation will see two tunnels and a great railroad bridge between Jersny City and New York. Even then the transportation facilities will be no more than sufficient for the great tide of travel, which annually swells higher and higher from the west to the nation's seaport.
The Senate yestorday passed a bill which for its protective features would make the lilcKinloy bill ashamed of itseli. It was introduced by Senator Magee, an ultra Democrat, and its purpose is to protect merchants from the bankrupt stock fakir, who rents a room, advertises a stock of goods alleged to have been rescued from a firo, sells to the public a lot of shoddy stuff and then departs for other fiolds. The Republicans all voted for the bill and rubbed their votes in most unmercifully on ^heir Democratic brethren. Of course tlio bill passed as its principles are right and proper, being the very quiutescence of protection.
U.NDi:n tho new proponed assessment law Montgomery county will lose the taxeson 3770,024 worth oi taxablos that being tho amount of tho assessod railroad property which will bo transferred for tho beuelit of the vanishing State treasury. Of course this Will necessitate an increaso of tho oouuty levy and consequently no saving to tho tax-payer. The scheme is a piece of juggling to transfer the odium of the increasing State debt aud shoulderit on the Boards of Commissioners.
'1'iie Govenor, State Auditor, "and tho Stato Treasurer have just perfected a loan of 8300,000 to pay the interest on the State debt. Borrowing money to pay the interest is the poorest kind of tlnaneering, but this is Democratic' economy. This £-300,000 added to tho 81,400,000 authorized to be borrowed last week will make 81,700,000 aud this added to the 88,500,000 will make 810,200,000 as tho State indebtedness. Such finoncering needs no oomment.
Until the defeat of Gladstone's bill to empower Roman Catholics to hold the offices of lord chancellor of the United Kingdom and viceroy of Ireland comparatively few Americans were Awaro that Roman Catholics could not already bold thuae offices.

In case a man is whipped he shall receive damages if not less than S'i,000 nor more than svooo, and a woman who is whipped by white caps limy recover from S.'i.OuO to $10,000 damages. If it be proved that tho persons who perform any act of white-capism live ill more than one county. the various counties from which tliev eome shall share iu the pnyment of 'sneh damages as are awarded. The bill proposing a new system of taxation for Indiana passed the house Monday afternoon by a majority of only one vote. The opposition to it was based largely on a belief that it is unconstitutional. anil if so it will work great hardship. An attempt was made to have tho selection relating to the taxation of railroads stricken out. but it was unsuccessful. In one of the speeches in support of the measure it was stated that after the tirst year the taxes of the railroad companies would amount to from ?'J,00l,000 to Si.-Jdo.OrtO annually, which would be less than the total revenue if the levy should be raised from twelve cents, the present rate, to twenty cents for state purposes. In taking railroad taxes from the counties, however, it will necessarily largely increase local taxation. The fee and salary bill was also passed.
