A RotWU Foundation

There was such a large crowd at the funeral of Mrs. Clara Hills Sunday afternoon that the foundation of the house nearly pavo away. The porch broke down beioro the services begun and after the services while tho poopie wore passing through to view the features tho houso began to oraok so that the funoral director ordered everybody out. Next day tho carpenters examined the foundation and found it to be no more than a mass of rotten wood.

Faust Up To Date-

llio English burlesque seen last season os presented by the London Gaiety Company, Was givou last evening ut the Grand Theater by an American company of whioh Kate Castloton is the bright particular star. The house was crowdel with people anxious to mako a comparison between the merits of the two oompanies, and tho general vordiot was that tho home performers did not suffer materially by the contrast. Miss Cast'eton, however, shone far above in Miss St John's character, Marguerite. H. W. Wright was"a dashing Mephisto and F.dward Low filled tho bill as Valentine. Tho whole performance was given with a rattle and swing which carried it through in a successful stylo.

The scenery used in tho original Gaiety production was an admirable feature of the performance.

Tho porennial Gaiety dancers, wen of course, present with their familiar evolutions, whiob seemed to please well os of yore.—Indianapolis

(These rules and sections rel'ite to the visiting of houses of ill fame, and the uso of profane language by tho police.)

By order of the Police Board of the City of Crawfordsville. W. C. CARR, Pros,

The foregoing rules take effect on and after Feb. 9, 18S9. Order No. 1. To the Chief of Polico, City of Crawfordsville, Iudiana: You are hereby ordered to have all drinking suloonri closed between the hours of 11 p. m„ and 5 a. m., mi 1 at all other times designated iu and by section 2098 of the Revised Statutes of 1888 of the State of Indiana, and to suppress all gambling iu strict conformity to tho laws ot Indiana and the ordinance of said oitv. W. C. CARK, President.

Irrivate Opin on Made Public. CountySuperintendontZuck: "I have here copy of the Fee and Salary Bill which is to be passed by the Legislature. It praotically does away with the Couufy Superintendent's office, as no man of any ability whatevor would have the office whioh the bill makes provision for. It outs the salary down from $4 to S3 a day but that is not the worst. It is so formed that the Couiity Commissioners are really judges of how many days the Superintendent shall work and he is paid only for the days he do»3« work. 1 le can receive no perquisities whatever from tho teachers and th it is the meanest thing of all. Why. frtquoiitly 1 have to write twenty-live letters a day and that would destroy one-sixth of niv salary. Again I have heretofore sold the tecchors their paper for writing their examinations upon ami these little books cost mo six cents each. It is necessary that the manuscripts should be uniform oud if 1 can't sell them I must give them away. If I examine 25 ten, hers at a time it would oost me just half my salary to fnruish stationery. Morover the bill requires a teacher to examine tho manuscripts for a day'n work ai no uiau can honestly uxaiaiuo -o uiuuy iu a day. Tnat clause of the bill is a roaring farce and Higgins writes that he will wade knee deo-i in gore to defeat it. I will never be Superintendent again if that clause goes into effect and I suppose that it will."

Foot Ball at Purdue Next Year. Yesterday the Lafayette Journal contained a loupthy article on tho foot ball outlook for Purdue next year. All the good players of this year's team will be book and sumo groat acqui litiono are expected of which the Journal speaks os follows: "Besides the.e mou of tho old team, the coming season will have Mmton, ono of DePauw's host ployers, now a student at Purdue, and a olose probability that ltundall, the great Wabash half back, will be found as a student at this university. Randall is one of tho befct men in the Indiana league and should ho oome to Purdue next year will prove a gold mine for the foot ball team. Thoro will be a championship banner lloatiug at Purdue next Thanksgiving, mark it."

HO VOTE.

The Oouncil Does Not Vote On the Uontraot With the Wafer and Light Company. 'i'he Council wns somewhat late in ooraing to order owing to the absence of Messrs. Jones, Soott and Reynolds, who were holding a cauous somewhere on the outside. When all were present the business began before a large and interested audenoe. A petition from about thirty merchants was presented whioh requested that Starling Carver be vested with the power of a morchant policeman. It was referred to tho Police Board. Another petition from about 400 citizens asked tho Counoil not to make a contract with the Water & Light CompaBy uutil it litd boon demonstrated that the city oould not maintain a light system of her own. The petition was referred to tho oommittee. The judiciary oommittee reported that the redisricting of the oity by enumeration was not yoi completed. Tho report was therefore deferred. Tho witnesses wlio had given testimony at tho time the condition of the lire protostion of the city was investigated last summer weie allowed fees.

Miscellaneous business was then eallod for oud everyone grew expectant at onco. Couuoilnitiu Reynolds on bo half of tuo light investigating commit oomposed of Messrs. C.irr, Scott ol

toe aud Raynolds, submitted a report their late juukoting tour whioh wtuquito interesting. Rushville, a town ot 4,000 had been visited and fouud to run a plant which cost $10,750. The streets were lighted by 155 iuiuudosoont li^httof 55 and 35 caudle power, and tho ligh' was satisfactory. Stores wore furnished with lights for GO oeuts oaoh burner permonth, and houses for 40 oonts per month. Tho revenue thus'aoorueing amounted to considerable and so helped out expense that it ouly cost the town about $5240 a year to light the streets. The plant there is to be en larged.

At Columbus a place of 8,000 the plant is owned by the oity and maintained lor street lighting only. Tho arc I system is used and in the oity there are 08 lights of 2,000 candle power oaoh. Tho last six months it cost the it} $830 to light against about 82,000 for six mouths when the plant

WAS

owned

by a corporation. The committee's visit to Chicago wot chiefly to inspect various kinds ol electricul machinery. The result wot most satisfactory but for obvious reasons the oommittee would recommend no particular system. A healthy competition would much reduce the oost ot the maohiuory. From Chioago they pro ceodod to .tavia, III., whioh put in a plant in 1888, and which the oity is now enlarging. luoandosent lights tc the number of 2C8 furnish the streets while private oonsumers aie using 482 lights and calling for more The revenue irom private consumption more than pays for the street lighting thus affording the city an inoome. Other interesting foots were cited and the oommittee reported that they believed tho city oould do better by putting in an electric light plant of her own than making a contract with any oompany. They could greatly reduce the city's expenses and make light cheiper for private consumers. This roport was roforred to tho special oommittee

The city clerk reported having reoeived $547 in lioonse fees aud the city treasurer reported a balance ou hand ot 33,300.11. A number of accounts wore allowed including a fos of $1 for removing three dead dogs und a dead cat from tho city limits. An opportunity was offered auy ono present to address tho Council but no one availed himselt of it and Ilia Council adjourned,

The light committee evidently sized up tho situation oorrootly and very wisely did uot bring the question of a contract with the light compauy to a vote, thus disgusting a nu'uoer of speuiatorc who catno up in the expectation oi grjut excitement.
