LETTER FROM MONTANA.

The Climate—Sheep and Oattle Raisiue Prices of Commodities-- Salaries of Oounto Officers-

Xoin'il

UUKAT FAILS,

1110

Mont. ,luu. 23,

1(1.—FriemlH iu old Montgomery have written

fifty-live letters iu a month,

inquiring about this far-famed "Nugget" State. Muny of tbo ciuoHtions rcrjuired at least one year's residence to auswor knowingly and I now beg privilege of replying through your valuable columns.

The olimiite is healthful, ourin asthma in its wornt st'igo ami consumption in its earliest. "Old-timoru" toll us that croup is unknown among Montana children and no case has come under our observation during tho twenty-two months' residence. However fortunate is ho who escapes au attack of "Mountain fever" while becoming acclimated. And rliematism follows exposure. The sheep herders are all more or less afllteted with rheumatism and deafness. Their witching over their very noisy llock through Spring showers to Winter blizzards bring it about. The thermometer in the shade rogisters to-ihiy (Jan. 23) 5S above zero instead of below, as many imagine.

With one brief exception Summer has oiptured and holds prisoner December and January. J5u'. as a rule, cold weather begins soon alter Christmas and tho bitterest kind of biting cold prevails till tin* middle of February. (Xhea tho last half of this month is tho time to prepare tho soil and sow the seed and repair the irrigation ditches and clear tho burns for a rich harvest). In that short Winter season tho air is light and you wou'd not know 'twas HI to GQ degrees below zero but for the air's cutting the mucous membraue ol the nasal passages. Tivo colored gentlemen of the U. S. Army froze to death last Winter while trying to walk from Sun Kiver to Fort Shaw, a distaueo of 1 miles. One must keep indoors during tho Winter period or become acquaiut-d •with oitarrh in its severest form, notwithstanding tho fact you have road "anuuals" statiug the opposite. Tho incessant gentle zephyrs fan away all sultriness (and sometimes houses when there is not a cloud in sight). Wind? Well, yes, that Niord is too mild and inexpressive when you are chasing your hat across the prairie and best efforts of your spirited horse iiro in vain. Umbrella and parasols are not in fashion.

The agricultural districts are quite limited yet. Close to tho mountains whore raiu is plentiful, or under irrigation, the yield is heavy. Sun iliver illey has a grand system of irrigation and on M. L. and H. Ji. Strong's well tilled farms, wheat lias reached eighty bushels per acre and oats one hun Ireil and tweuty-iive bushels per acre. Tho second crop of oats is mowed as hay for ti brief Winter, irrigation and industry guarantee success. Mrs. Murray tilled (or caused to be) a three-acre gurden and marketed her vegetables at tho town of Sun ltiver live years, aud with tho live thousand dollars cash receipts bought au improved farm last year. Real o3tato agents greet a tenderfoot" on liis ariivul, telling him what good crops can be raised ou the "bench" any season. Aud they have t-pecimuu* of wheat and oats in their otlices to show tho quality. These "bench" ,iecinieus are nearly three ytar-i old and will be kei till next "vut. year" to reuew the supply.

As to stock, immense herds of horses, cattle aud sheep checker tho milli-u-aero ranges. They trod tho deep-cut butl'alo paths to tho richest piistur us and strongest fountains, and arc fat au-1 gay like the premium stock exhibited at your county fair. Auy mau of business habits can double his investment iu sheep hero iu two years. Some warm battles take place between tho cow boys and sheep herders us per orders of former's employers, when their herds and Hooks meet, because tho sheep graze so closely as to destroy llio pas turo for cattle. Did you ever draw reins iu a .Montana sheep «amp uuil note tho difference iu herders? See that experienced, de.if, greasy, pndeless herder standing calmly in the midst of ringiug bel's, lost lambs, aud bleatiug ewes, directing the movements of his trained dogs! See that dog fully a mile to tho front turning back tho uusuBPOcting shoop to tho disappointment of the hungry wolf! And there's a third dog running to the General for further orders! Thus the successful herder manages throo to seven thousand sheep without worry. Ou tho other hand, the new bewildered, inexperienced, sensitive herder is running at break-neck speed trying to head off his small baud, with club iu hand u'ud pup at heel! Tho latter loses more sheep iu a week thau the former in a year and commands half tho wages. Swine will not thrive up hero (it coat us no small sum to learn this.) Tho Aunuals circulated east say "cliolorais unknown" which is true, but a disease something liko homesickness, takes ho!d and your hogs pin" away and (tie. Houco pork is imported while nvjtt on aud beef tiro exported. May we add hero that Hour is another chief import, yet the reader should bear iu mind that Montana is out of debt aud now ranks first of tho Union in mineral wealth.

Well, ohiokens aro good property, never loss than SG Dor dozen. Twelve dollars a dozen is a common prico.

EggB sell at '30 to 40 oento per dozen in

summer and are 00 cents a (lo/.en at the present writing. Turkeys soom to know their valuo, (25 cents per pound tho year round) mid all die with tho "big-head," some call it "rupe."

The oustorn pupils would drop bat aud ball to watch tho western schoolboy's favorite game, "The Kouud-up." Tho lxiys urge their claims to be "ltoper" and "lirandor" like you to be "caMier" and "giver" iu "town-ball." Tho roper throws his lasso so as to catch tho lest dodger and tho brander ipplies tho brandiug iron till his calf boilers."

O. O. Ko'.lisoa is teaching the town school and is well-liked by pupil aud patrou, throwing hio whole vim and pride into the work as of old at Houud Hill. C. C. thinks tho pluck of his pupils commendable. Two seven year old little girls drive five miles to school every morning, bringing their own and pony's meals in the buggy. At the oloso of school, the town boys try to "hang on," but with a mischievous smile one little girl holds tho lines while tho other is plying tho whip aud they gtdlop out of sight. School having begun early will close in a fortnight aud tho teacher will bo in Crawfordsvillo in three weeks.

There aro many Iloosiors in this oou.ity. Tho President of the First National Hank of Groat Falls, tho editors of tho Tribune, some of the chief uiL-rcbautB, ranchers, teachers, surveyors, lawyers and ablost prenchor aro all from Indiana.

Money is plentiful yet commands a high rate of interest. Two per cent, a mouth or 2-1 per cent, interest if often paid while 10 per oeut. is a low rate. Hank deposits (for a period of at least (i months) draw Gpercent, interost. Even grocers doa strictly cash businoss on a largo scale. Bach,Cory i- Oo.'s receipts for the mouth of August alono was thirtysix thousand dollars.

Lots that sold for $150 six years ago can not be bought for $18,000 now. Such opportunities for investment are goue, but those lots iu the northeast part of the oity selling at from $500 to S700 will advance 100 per cent, iu one year, mark it! Between the public school building and the great dam is the place to invest.

This couuty is Republican by a small majority, but Hon. Paris Gibson is oredit'-'d with spending 820,000 to make tho county 30 Democratic and sooured his own election as State Senator for this oouuty, lpi-t November. At the opening of the campaign one year ago, it was found that there was uol a lawyer to take the race ou the Republican jickot for Prosecuting Attorney, so a party set out to the mountains 75 milos away "to rustle" one from out of a surveying party. Hon. Douglas Martin was brought down and nominated and run liko a scared fox. lie now holds the ollico and is chairman of tho oontral oommittee. All couuty offices hero pay twico tho salary of Montgomery, as I remember, e.g., the Judge of Circuit Court receives §0,000 per term. But before tho Athon boys pick up their "rips" to come hero for ollico, let mo state that you aro too late for 'l(i as two years residence is required to be eligible for office.

Si'ico Hons. Peter Kennedy and A. D. KelliEo: have pictured so vividly the scenery of this locality, I'll uot attempt. Hut would like !." intrude, later, with some facts on foreign ommigratiou. Being au ouumerator of the recent census (at §1S0 per mouth clear) I took time to do thorough work, and llnd that the choioo "claims" given the old soldiers as free homoB are nearly all taken by aliens whoso ancestors in good pari tried to crush our republic Very Respectfully A.
