OLD SPEC IfldOURT.
The Trial of Miss Alice Folic For Chicken Stealing Begins To-day-The circuit court to-day took up the sase of Miss Alico Folic indicted for stealing the chiokens of Jacob Beam. The court room was crowded with witnesses and spectators, the audienoe being as large as the average audience during the Pettit trial. Prosecutor Mofiett and Judge Sellar appeared for the State and M. D. White and M. E. Clodfelter for the defendant. Mr. Moflfett made the opening state for the State and said the prosecution intended to prove that on the 20th day of last May, Jacob Beam missed a number of his chickens, some of whioh were family pots bearing names. He proceeded to Fruits' store where he left a description of these chickens and orders to keep a look out for them. On that afternoon Miss Alice Folic brought chiokens to the store answering the description. The Beam family was summoned and positively identified them. Tue horse thief detectives took the mutter in hand and taking the chickens to Beam's farm proved them to be the chickens stolen, by witnessing them proceed to their accustomed roost in the evening.
Mr. White opening for the defense, siid it would be conclusively proved that Alice Folio was sick all the night upon which the chickens were stolen, and unable to leave the house even during the preoeding afternoon. The next afternoon, however, being better, she took a ooop of chickens that had been penned up for some days to Fruits store and sold them for lier mother. She herself had nothing to do with the putting up of the ohiokens and only saw them as they were taken from the box by Fruits.
Jacob Beam was the tirst witness called, and he testified to the facts sot forth by the prosecutor's statement. The cross examination developed nothing new c-xcopt that Mr. Beam said he was sorry the matter had ever come up, but that as this was a free country he wus going to see it to the end. It was noon before he was excused.
Mrs. Jacob Beam was the second witness and swore to the same thing her husband did. She said that she instant ly recognized "old spec" and "long neck," both of whioh chickens were deaily beloved by the whole household. Miss Lily Beam, hi rgranddaughter, had also a familiar speaking acquaintance with suid chickens, and could swear to their identity if she suw them in the old world.
Tbe case is attracting no little atten. tion and the whole thing is to be greatly regretted. It seems very doubtful whether the State can make aase on the evidence, and that these parties who are so respected and prominent in Ripley township Bhould thus get into the courts seems a ehame. To an outsider it appaars as though the matter might have been settled without all this hub bub and unseemly demonstration.
The Milk Tefter,
In the description of the cre.imery yesterday, notice of the milk tester was omitted. This is a very recent invention of Prof. Babcock, of the Wisconsin Agricultural college, and is in use in only three or four creameries. It detdruunes the relative richness of each man's milk and therefore the price which he reoeives for it. A small quantity of milk is placed iu the test bottle to whioh is added almot-t pn eqaal amount of acid. A number of these bottles are placed iu the machine and revolved at a rapid rate for several minutes and iu ths agitation thus caused the acid eats up the casino or cheesey part o.' the milk, leaving tile greasy part which represents the cream to rise in the narrow neck of the bottle. By means of a scale marked thereon the number of pounds of butter that can bo made from a hundred pounds of milk of that kind. Four pounds to the hundred is considered a go average for this time of year. Nine tests were made yesterday morning, the results rauging from three to six pounds, the highest leing the milk furnished bv Judgo Britton, who keeps nothing but Jersey cows.
Charley Wateroury deeiros those farmers who have not IXJCU called up: yet to kn .w that he will see them just as soon as he gets time.
