The House has passed a resolution to investigate the State Treasurer's oflioo. The Demooaats expected the Republicans to oppose the resolution but to their dissapointmont and chagriu every Republican voted to investigate. In thisrespeot Republicans are dillereut from Democrats.
Among the bills quietly introduced into the legislature is one prohibiting progressive euchre parties and laying of draw-poker. This is a blow at a great and growing industry in this State, and it is stated that already a majority is pledged to prevent the bill from reaahing a final passage.
Representative Curtis, of Marion, is after the foreign building and loar associations. He has introduced a bill requiring such associations to deposit $200,000 iu the State treasury before doing business in this State. At present there are a number of nntionul building and loan associations doing business iu Indiana, and shareholders have no recourse against them, in cose of litigation, as they have nothiug in the State on which execution could be levied.

the new protection is transferring the worsted market from English to American worsteds. In Novemtier, 1S81), Great Britain exported to the United States 4,1513,500 vardsof
worsted fabrics. Iu November, Is'.KI bUo exported to us only 2,147,1500 yards,
and yet worsted coatings aio uu higher in price, because America's productive oapucity is equal to the demand.
Hjjue's something from the Anderson Herald that is worth framing, it is so full it is of proper advice:
Whether you talk with neighbors or strangers, at home or abroad, riding or walking, always have a good word for your town. Speak of the beautiful homes, the nice streets, the excellence of the surrouuding country, the productiveness of the soil and the intelligence and enterprise of your neighbors. (Jite the acquisition of wealth and be sure to impress upon the minds of your hearers that the road of wealth is open to all. Stand by your town through thick and thin as you would btuud by yonr best friend in times of distress and you will find it proHperoiiH and thiiving as never before.
Queen Victoria is very fat and riot very good tempered. A correspondent writes that she is tjcttiuir so feeble sho walks upstairs backward and slowly with the help of an ebony cane. .. Thi» is a likely •story. Would the correspondent have tis believe that there are no elevators— "lifts," as the Briton calls them—in the palace of .the empnasH of the Indies? Jf the "widdv"' would get out for a good run of Beveral miles a day on foot, and run upstairs with all her might, face foremost and without any stick, about ten times a day, she would find it would improve her digestion and wind. She is ten years younger than Gladstone. If she wantfl to keej, her intellect and health, sho should nop coddling herself and stop drinking so much ale.
Thomas Perkins, a Demboratic "worker" of Clinton county, has brought suitagainBt J. W. Morrison, D. W. C. Bryant, D. F. Allen, Wm. G. Morris and other Democratic reformers demanding the sum of $300, on a contract between the party of the first part and the parties of the second part. The complainant alleges that the above sum is due him on account of mo. ey and whisky furnished the Democratic Central Committee during the last campaign. The India napolis Sentinel and other morally good Democratic papers like the Frankfort Crescent should let lip on Brush long enough to fathom the depth of the iniquity and wickedness existing in the great party of reform.

There is a spirit of freedom in the air in this country which overwhelms many of the old time customs, and Jews do here many things which would cause their ostracism in the Jewish quarters of uie Russian villages.
OIKl.S WITH SHOUT llAIIt.
'•When I first began my work all Jewish girls and women wore wigs. They clipped their own hair very close and wore the wigs over it. Before my lime th-y used to shave their heads. The reason for this custom was that some rabbi had declare,I it proper. He argued that it subdned ,iie spirit of vanity inherent in all women. His dictum ivas generally approved, and it became
I have come across a number of girls who let their hair yrow secretly under their wigs while they were still in their native villages, and threw their wigs overboard as soon as they got. on the vessels that carried them to these shores. Of course if they had been detected at home they would have received scant courtesy from the rabbis.
A QCKKU CASE:
"It may seem strange that Chief Rabbi Joseph doesn't insist upon the continuance of this custom ill Xew York, but I imagine that he has been advised that it would be impossible to enforce it Most of the women wait until they come here before they let their hair grow. "It, is my biisiite-vs to train and trim it ifter it is grown. You see event he girls who have lidd to the custom until they come to T,ii.s country give it up wlieu they see how lonesome they are here. It is no easy task to lix their hair, because constant clipping lias stiffened and hardened it. It is amusing, '.hough, that these airl are very critical. Once they discard the cupping and wig business they go to the other extreme. It is as though all the natural vanity that has been ]ent up iu them had suddenly been let loos**. "About a year ago I was called upon to testify in a lawsuit about this custom.

so general a custom that no pious Jew-: ish woman would have exhibited her own hair in public under any circunistances. I "If by chance her wig was displaced and lu-r own hair was revealed she considered it a calamity, and prayed earnfstly that her involuntary sin might bu forgiven. The wigs were never allowed to be ornamental, but were always very plain and common looking. This custorn still prevails iu tie-small towns and villages of Russia and Russian Poland. Elsewhere it has bei'ii modified. "J was abroad a few years ago. and noticed that iu the cities the women have est-abli.shed a new system. Instead of dipping" their hair short all over the head they now let it grow in a bang in front and clip the rest. Thev wear little skull caps over the dipped part, and only put on the wigs occasionally. Very few wear wig^ iu the morning, and they do their marketing wiUio.st them.
