Crawfordsville Daily Journal, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, 12 January 1891 — Page 2
There's a corset that isn't a corset, a waist with straps for the shoulders and rows of buttons to button on skirts and stocking supporters and so forth—the Ball Waist —and that's about the whole of it. No you can put it to the washtub—no metal in it or on it.
It is worth your seeing, il for nothing but how to sew on buttons'to button easy and never come off. and how to .•nakc buttonholes wear forHver.
Women differ in their ways of thinking and dressing as well as in other ways. This waist is for women whose minds are made up that they won't wear corsets.
There's much to be said on both sides but did you ever hear of a woman who hadn't made up her mind in
some
way? and is there any
possible use in trying to get her to change it She will and she will or she won't and she won't.
You can get the "Rnli Waist and wear it a week or i\vo or three and, if you don't want it, take it back to the store and get your money

The repnhlic of liaarico is advancing in enlightenment. Bull fighting has been abolished in the City of Mexico, and the arena where the fights took place has been cut.up into building lota and sold to speculators.
New Jersey has set up a tariff agaliut doctors outside of that state. Doctors from other states shall no longer come into her borders either to cure or kill people. All the plums there are to be got around Long Branch and other summer places New Jersey proposes to reserve for her own pill and powder men.
Gen. Miles thus sums irp tho present shaky Indian situation: "The Indians are great dreamers. They seldom if ever work, and consequently have plenty of time to sit around and pray and dunce and fast. Thus is all that they have been doing thus far. and I don't know that they have done any different for the last fiftv vears."
DEMOCRATIC Congressmen are much annoyed about the frequency and facility with which Cleveland "shoots oil his mouth," It is not, they suv, that he says anything damaging, but he talks too much. Iir.pression is general that he is making ft oeperute bid for the next presidential nomination, and this is not satisfying to tho leaders of the party in Congress who, no matter what the Democratic masses may desire, are not inolined to. take a second dish of Cleveland. Senator ^Gorman says tho next convention is too far ahead to talk of candidates. He thinks liis party would be much better occupied in advancing Democratic issnes than in mapping out tho issues of any one man.
One thing is certain: the Jews now control Europe. All the banking and financial interests of the nations are in their hands. No country could make war today unless Jewish bankers would advance the sum to pay its expenses. The actual peace of Europe, therefore, depends on them. A curious story comes across tho water that it was the Jews who caused the financial difficulties of the Baring brothers. The Barings are the London bankers with whom Russia deals, negotiates loans and deposits money. Russia hr_n been engaged in her old amusement of Jew baiting for the last year or two, and this time has carried it rather too far. The story is that the Jew bankers of Europe resolved to touch Russia in a tender point, her finances. They plotted to make the Barings' bank fail altogether. They thought that thus Russia would loee money enough to become seriously embarrassed financially. Tho hostile bankers did not accomplish their object fully, but they succeeded in sending an icy blast down the spine of the world.

The Pension Sharks and Their Victims— The Uongressional Situation Other MattersSlHM'lul C"JTes|Kmlem'e of.The Journal..
WASUIWIOX, Juu. 7, 'HO.—The worst enemy of the soldier is the pousion shark, the principal of whom build and feather their nosto in thiscitv. Iutleed, these specimens lrnve within the last luaiterof a century perpetrated the most gigautio swiudle of modern times, with tho boys in blue for their victims. Said tho House Committee on Pensions in a recent report: "The claimant is required to look up all evidence and the attorney's energies are centered on tiling the same in tho Department and dunning the claimant for postage which present laws allow him to demand from his client." This is an ollicial statement of a well understood truth.
The investigation of otlicials iu the pension bureun develops tho startling fact that pension attorneys have oeen paid by soldiers since the beginning of the war for services, pretended or real, the enormous sum »f $37,0oD,0o0, During the year lsW they levied upon the pension allowances of disabled veUraus or dependent widows or children to the tune of Si, 150,000. Xor is this all. Unless Congress makes some provision for tho protection of soldiers there is yet in sight for these so-called attorneys the huge pile of S-1,'SO0,OOO.
An analysis .of this hist statement shows the following: Under existing laws on original invalid claims now on tile under the old laws, alout 200,000 at a fee of £5,000,000 original claims under law of June 27, 181H), 530,000 at fee of £10 each, 5,:!(.«,000 fees on increase claims now on tile, 300,'300 at .$10 each, §3,000,000 and the estimated number of increase claims that will be tiled under the law of .Tuue'27, 1800, §6,500,000, a total sum of §21,800,000, Does it not appear that Congress should do something to relieve the soldier:from this terrible drain upon theii small resources
Those opposed to the Uepubl Congressional policy are beginning count the days before this session will, end. There are in fact fifty days remaining for work ere Congress expires by limitation. Everybody familial with legislation knows full well that tin bulk of the work is always done aftei the holiday recess. Heuoe chero is no iwirtieular alarm at the existing condition of things. As a matter of fact, though, business stands just as well now as it usually does at this period of the year. The appropriation measures are "well advanced iu the committee, which make them up. The pension and fort iicutiou bills have been com pleted in the House the army and l) .vy are on the House calendar ready for action the Indian, sundry civil, agricultural, and iu fact the four others remaining are well forward toward completion in the various committees which prepare them. Notwithstanding all this talk alxnit the backwardness of the appropriation bills it can bo put down as a certaiuty that all will be passed before tho final dissolution of Congress. At every short session four lifths of these money bills become laws iu the lust fortyeight hours of a session. Thus far
Judge Cannon says there has been no necessity for side-tracking other legislation to give the appropriation measures the right of way.
The politicians here have been gossiping the last few days about the Ohio situation. The reputed movement of Governor Foruker to make Senator Sherman the next Republican candidate for governor is the sensation of the hour. Senator Sherman himself says that any such undertaking is made without his authority or consent, and that he does not want to be governor ol the State. Iu fact, he says, there are younger men who are able to fill the chair, and he thinks McKiuley will be the nominee, ltis well understood by the Senator's friends that he aspires to no office beyond the one now filled by him. So far as Mujur McKinley is concerned he declines to be interviewed, but it is pretty safe to say he will be in the race to tho finish.
One of the quaint figures of Washington is old Geuerol Albert Pike, of Arkansas, Tall and of heavy build, .with long flowing white liair and snowy beard he attracts the attention of all. Geu rul Tike is one of the highest Masons iu the country. To tho fraternity he has given his valuable library which is housed in tho same building with himself. In ull matters of masonry he is looked up to as au authority, and no great occasion of the order would held complote without his presence.
This week tho effort will bo made to pass the shipping bill. Representative I'urqulior, of New York, who has charge of it, predicts that if it becomes a law, within a year, five or six seaports of tue south will have built up an ocean trade witn European and South American portH. Ho is confident that the bill will be passed by tho House with the postal and naval olauses added.
While one part of the army is fighting out West another part is dancing iu this oity—not the ghost dunce but the germau. The past week the officers at the barracks here gave a grund ball, and at every dance the army contingent can always be found. There ure a number of United States troops stationed here including a regiment of artillery, nearly all of whom are armed as infantry sol iliers, and besides who have two troops of cuvsdry men who have seen hard ser vice on the plains and thereby won the privilege of pleusant quarters near the Capital. Cieueral Grant, when President was tho first to mass an armed force in this city, the necessity of which was forced upon him by tho threatened subversion of the government by these who would have by force made Tildun his successor.
