SOME CURIOUS.FACTS.

A well authenticated case comes from San Francisco, in which a confirmed opiuin taker was entirely cured of his habit by hypnotism. The opium drunksrd •was sentenced to the Sao Francisco boose of correction. While there of course opium was denied to him. He underwent fearful tortures in consequence till the jail physician. Dr. Brown, feared he would go insane. It occurred then to the doctor to try the hypnotic cure. He hypnotized the opiuin victim, who fell into a refreshing Bleep, the first he had known in ye«rs.

From the time he obtained that first good sleep a rapid change took place in the unfortunate rictim. He gained flesh and lost all desire for opium. So completely did the taste leave him that a fellow prisoner who did not believe in the genuineness of the cure offered Him some gum opium. He took it and it made him deadly sick, something that had never happened to him before. The cure was complete.

Other instances are on record of cures almost equally important. Inveterate Bmnfrnrw have been enred by simply putting tbem into the hypnotic state, and informing them while in that state that they could emoke no more, that it would tnake them sick if they ever attempted ft again. The result followed exactly as the hypnotizing physician predicted. When the subject came to his normal state, and attempted the uraal pipe be was mi able to smoke it and became sick.

Immeasurable possibilities are opened for reputable physicians in the hypnotic field. If the opium and tobacco habits can be cured by reputable and scientific doctors, then the alcohol habit can be cored too. Moreover, if physicians in New York and San Francisco can work •uch remarkable cures, physicians elsewhere can do the same.

Dr. Paul Qibior, director of the Pastear institute in New York, has been talking about the Italian faster, Socci. He says there is no reason to doubt the genuineness of the fasting. He thinks long training will explain it largely. There is in his view a universal ether, sa Tiima mnndi, which animates all living things. It is everywhere, the life at all beings, but most not be confounded with intelligence. On this somewhat hazy material the doctor thinks Succi Hvee and thrives. He draws on the universal energy or ether which is lying around loose in the air for us all to draw on, if we only knew how to do it.

Socci has besides great vitality and power of resistance, like a cat, and can Hvw under ordinary circumstances when people of low energy and life power would die. Then he has indomitable will power. These three—the drawing on the universal ether, his marvelous power of resistance and his unconqner Shs-atAs will are the foundation of his success as a faster in the judgment of

Dr. Gibier. To this he adds long train ing, and the task is done which enables him to make a comfortable living by starving.

Others than he have a similar power of abstaining from food. Indians fast for days at a time without experiencing evil effects. The Yogis, of India, religious ascetics, obtain in time marvel one psychic powers by long training and fasting. The training must be gradual, Succi will show to mankind that they can live on half the food they are accustranfd to take if they train themselves toil
