"Julius Ay ere, a young traveling man, son of a prominent ex-oitj offioial, was arrested at Evanst ille this evening on a warrant sworn out by Fostoliice Inspector Viikery, on a charge bf collecting money on a forged poatoffico money order. The forgery was committed by J. W. Bowers, also a traveling man, who was recently discharged by J. R. Goodwin & Co., of Evansville. Bowers has fled, but secret-service officers have a clew to his whereabouts. Bowers also collected considerable money belonging to Goodwin & Co., whioh he appropriated to his own us*."— Indianapolis Journal.
Mr. Ayers formerly resided in this city in the house of Mrs. Nellie Wynn on east Main street. He is a strikingly handsome young fellow and of a pleasing manner. He married Mies Feokett, of Kokomo, several years ago and came to reside here. After removing from this place his wife secured a divorce on account of his worthlessness.
A Monster Salmon-
J. J. Insley reoeived a present this morning from his brother, F. A. Insley, of Portland, Oregon. It was a 40 pound salmon and the most beautiful fish ever seen in this city. It came packed in ice and looked as though just taken from the water. Our local sportsmen have the Columbia River fever already.

NO.-2."
This is the sign thut meets the eye when approaching the magnificent new grain elevator of Crabbs & Reynolds. This name is very signifioiont and as its name implies is the second building that has arisen from tho ashes under the management of this enterprising firm. As might be expected their experience in building elevators enabled them to mRke improvements after each fire tuid Phenix No. 2 now stands not only as the finest elevator in Montgomery county but equal to any in Indiana. The elevator is so arranged that grain can bo handled either from railroad or farmers' wagons. It is. provided with dumps for corn, wheat and oats. Tiius making the unloading of grain so rapid and so easy that farmers never liavo to wait. The building is provided with the latest patterns of Fairbanks Standard scales throughout, hioluding a one thousand -ljushel hopper. Also a full roller corn and the me«L manufactured here the best to be fonnd anywhere and is far superior to the old stone process. The building is also provided with facilities for handling 10 to 12 oars of corn and 10,000 bushels of wheat per day. The work is all done by machinery, grain is tiken from the wagon, cleaned and put into the ear without the aid of the scoop shovel. The storage oapaoity is about 75,000 bushels inside of the main building. Acorn house for storage of ear oorn having a capacity of 10,000 bushels is looated just north of the main build-" ing. The oorn is elevated into this building from dumps thus avoiding all shoveling. A watchman's house stands nearby and a night watoh is always on duty. This plant as a whole is a model of completeness and will well repay a trip to any one interested in this line of business. The business carried on here is the largest in central Indiana and the amount of grain handled makes it possible for ttiis firm to handle it very cheaply. The firm of Crabbs & Rey nolds is one of the loading firms of the oity, employing from 6 to 10 men.
CHEWING GUM,
Crawfordsville is fast acquiring a reputation through the great Northwest as
a
point whence emanates the toothsome ohewing gum. Smith & Myers are fast obtaining a monopoly on this business ever driving in White of Elkhart the manufacturer of "Yucatan," a big sale being made in Elkhart on yesterday by our home institution. Although the foroe is being constantly increased the orders are still three weeks behind. Ten men are now employed and two men to be added at onoe. They are at present turning out $3,000 sticks of Brownies gum a day but this will soon be largely inoreased. Both frait and mint gums ar3 made and of only the best materials. A large evaporating boiler is the latest addition to the firm's facilities and it enables them to make a much sweeter and better article tlian formerly. Shipments are made to every plaoe in Indiana and the majority of the towns in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan and some even more remoto. The day seems not far distant when the Brownies chewing gam will be as famous as the popular little people from whioh it takes its name.

The Maine is the largest ship of the new navy. She is really the first regular line of battle ship the new navy will have. She is called a "belted cruiser," from the fact that all her middle part will be covered with an armor of steel plate twelve inches thick. Such armor covering bow and stern would make the big ship too heavy, therefore these are left unarmored, though the whole ship is of steel. Bow and stern are filled in with watertight compartments, so that if she is hit in one place and leaks the damage will not affect other parts. Where her machinery is she is protected by the armor. The Maine's largest guns can carry a GOO pound projectile nine miles.
