Otis Potts, a youug boy employed at the Indiana Wire Foneo factory while sweeping out last Saturday morning had a narrow esoape from being a mangled corpse. His ooat caught in one of the two point machines and lie was being rapidly palled into tha tnaohinery when his cries brought assistance.
Major Dane's Lecture-
The Y. V. C. A. hall was orowded lost evening to hear Mojor Dane's leo turo on New Zealand. Those who heard him on "The Naval Battles of the Rebellion," were somewhat sappointed although the leoture last night was very good. Most expeoted him to treat of the government of that now couutry, but instead dwelt only on its people and physical characteristics. The lecturer oommnnded cIobb attention and gave general satisfaction.
Remembering the Needy-
Lodge No. 2 of the Fanners' Union, in the Black Creek vicinity, iB in a prosperous condition, and is doing much good for the poor of that place. On Monday last a number of the members congregated and cut 25, uords of wood for grandmother Farris, who is in very deedy oircumotnnues, the wood being furnished by William Hurley and Benjamin Stout. In the evening of that day, the Union gave a magnificent oyster festival for the benefit of tne old lady at tho residence of Mr. Hurley, who, by the way, is a whole-souled and genial gentleman. The hours were plea&outly spent iu eating, laughing, joking, and generul merriment. The proceeds of the supper were §12.50. Long life to the Farmers Union, was the wiBh of all present,
nr. H. 0. Hovey On OavesNew Haven Journal and Courier The American Geographical society some time ago requested Dr. H. 0. Hovey, ^hose fonducss of cavern research is well kuown, to give them a speoial lecture on Aiammotk oave. The request was complied with Monday night and Ohickering hall was crowded with the elite of N.w York city to hear what was to be said about the most magnifioeut oavern in the world. In order to meet the oooasion Dr. Hovey had recently revisited the oave and had a large number of views taken in addition to those already in his possession. He was enthusiastically received, and at the close of the leoture scores came forward to congratulate hira personally on the suofoss of his practical and thorough study of underground America. It was a complete and gratifying triumph.

McCoy and John Booe returned last evening from a three days' hunt at Hillsboro. —Mrs. John Bobbins and Bob Hays went to Logonsport this morning to attend the wedding of Jbhn Hays. —Miss Blanohe Miller, who has been tho guest of Mrs. J. A. Gilbert retarded to her home in Busselville, Ohio, today.

He smiled very nioely when he reoeived the money aud said he would be there again. -The art exhibit of the King's Daughters is the finest ever given in this oity. No one should fail to attend. The hours are from 9 to 12 a. m., and from 1 to 1 p. m. Admittance 10 oents. —The Sling's Daughters will give an art exhibit at their rooms in the Miller blook this week. The exhibit will bo open to the public on Wednesday after noon and on Thursday and Friday evenings. —The ladies of the third divisions of the First Baptist church will give a socal at the ohuroh Tuesday evening, Deo. 28. Supper from 5 to 8 o'clock. Admission 15 oents inch ding cuppor. Everybody invitod. —The New York Comedy Company gave a olevor presentation of "Only a Woman's Heart" at Musio Hull lunt evening to a fair audienoo. The company is one of the best popular pi ce combinations on the road.

"Last night ut 9 o'clock, Mrs. Euuicu Smith, aged 83, died at the residenoe of her son, M.S. Smith, The remains will be taken to the Spring Grove cemetery at (Jinoinnati, Ohio, for interment to-morrow morning. Mrs. Smith was born at Mt. Healthy Ohio, Oct. 20, 1807. She was married to Daniel Smith whom she has survived for 41 yei-rs. For the last ten years she hus made her home with her son, M. S. Smith, of tliii ty. Mrs. Smith was the mother of 0 children, 4 girls and 2 boys. She was a lady of many virtues and highly esteemed by all who knew her. She \v member of the Christian church for GO years.
