Pettit'8 Lawyers Exercised Bbcause lowed Only a Paitial Payment. Yesterday at Lafayette tlio Board of Commissioners allowed Pettit's attorneys $1,500 on account, but did not state bow much more tliey would pay or when they Would pay it. They Btated Pettit's attorneys were not yet through their work and when they were it would be time to settle the bill. The claimants at onoe dismissed their oleim to bring suit for the $10,000. To the Courier Kumler spoke aa follows after the adjournment: "They luve heard what every prominent lawyer in Lafayette thought our services were worth. Nearly every attorney put the amount above $5,000, Wo offered to take §3,(500 and now they want us to take $1,500 as a partial pay ment." "I think it the very left thing for you," said Mr. Stuart. "I contended all along that it should not Le taken to ie Commissioners. It will be au easy matter to get abetter allowance than $3,1)00 before a court "How muoh will you sue the county fori!" "Ten thousand dcllars," replied Mr,
Gaylord. "Wo will take a change of venue, and get a good portion of it too." "When will you bring the suit?" "Not until March, in order that the amount may include our services be' tween now and that time. We have yet, perhaps, to take the eaao to the Supreme Court."
The Lafayette Call is feeling sore because Judge Snyder saw fit to grant Pettit numerous counsel competent contend with the eminent lawyers of the State. The Call fears that Tippeoanoa couuty will be bankrupt before the fate of Mr. "Pettit is finally decided and loudly lament-i tho money already paid out. It closes as follows: "We hope Judge Snyder will be so fair and considerate as to conclude the engagement of counsel at the county's espouse where the statu ta terminates the county liability to furnish such eouusel to an accused upon demand, to wit: at the conolusion of the one fair trial which has been had. Tippeoanot county is not made of m:ney."
X)n Dangerous Ground.
Last night a horse buyer traveling for a large horse dealing lirm in Lafayette was in_the city. He had over $1,000 on his person and was drunk as a boiled owl. At tho instigation of J. J. InBley he was taken out of the hands of some noted local crooks to prevent his I'eing swindled and was put in jail, This morning he was released on the payment of a fine and l:ft for Indianapolis still druuk and drinking. When l:Bt seen he was offering to trade watoUes with a stranger.

That a committee oonsistiug of the M^or 'and Common Counoil be appointed to investigate the different eleotrio light systems in use in tho surrounding cities and the power and machinery operating the same and to eontract for the purchase and putting in of such, plant and the necessary machinery for running the same as to them shall seem the most suitable to the wauls of said city at a cost not to exceed twentylive thousand dollars ($25,000) exe'usive of the grounds and buildings upon and in whioh to operate the same, and that said committee, when appointed, bo iuvested with full power to act in the premises.
Most of the council arc enthusiastically in favor of the resolutions and ii seems very probable that before mai:y montha tho citizens will have ineuii descent lights in their hoiiHes and the oity be lighting her own streets. A goutloman high in tlie council of Water and Light Company stated tody t!n»t he believed that when the company hid made the city a proposition it would quickly purchase the company's i-ystem.
One of the oouncil stated yesterday that as the company had been extorting the oity for the last five years ho was not in favor of paying attention to any proposition it might make, but of goiug ahead and getting the best plant tj be obtained.
