Lilian Lewis Last Night•

A good audience greeted the old favorite Lilian Lewis at Music Hall last uigbt. Miss Lewis has innde a great reputation since last appearing hero and fully sustained it last night. Her voice is as shrill and powerful as of old and she makes as great an impression as an emotional actress. Her support, especially Miss Merron, and Messers. Whitecar and Cowpar, was fine and all in all tho troupe is a strong combination. The costumes were elegant and superb, being as fine as any ever seen in the oity. Tho play of "Credit Lorraine" is of doubtful oharaoter and not especially conducivo to morality.

A Tragedy on the Pettit OaseLaurence Marston, the husband of Lilian Lewis and author of "Credit Lorraine" besides the other tragedies which the fair Lilian plays, has taken a great interest in the Pettit oase, and yesterday at THK

JOURNAL

office col

lected all the available matter on the trial and subsequent events. He says he sees the foundation for a magnificent tragedy in the history of the oase and we may not be surprised next year to hear of Miss Lewis starring in a play founded on the Pettit murder.

is pleased to acknowl

edge the receipt of the first report of the State ard of Charities of whioh Alexander Johnson is Secretary. It is a book of nearly 200 pages containing facts which evory philanthropist cannot fail to be interested iu. The report on the jail and county

aBylnm

of Mont

gomery county will be of particular interest as being tho views of a mau who liaB soon nearly all similar institutions of the State. Secretary Johnson visited this plaoe Dec 4, 1889, and he says: "The jail ia two squares from the oourt house iu Crawfordsville. This is built on the rotary plan, of whioh thoro is only one other examplo in tin State. There are eight iron cells in each tier, eaoh being in shape a seotor of a oirole, or rather an ootagon.l'he oells rotate on a central pivot, coming in turn to the one door that serves for all. Eaoh cell hrs a water closet. The ventilation ia excellent, and if used as intended, viz: for isolation of prisoners, it would bo au excellent jail. Tho usual disinclination of slierifls to do anything whioh will interfere with "the boy having as good a time as possible," is, however, too strong to allow any such ystom to bo properly usod, and the "rotary" is not looked, so that tho x}risoners rotate it themselves and minglo in the corridors whioh surround it. This

jail

has

a oath tub but no rules about oathing or for washing, bedding or clothing. The bedding is net very good. Thoro are no sheets or pillow-slips used. There is a sjporato department for women, also hospital cages. The jail is iu fairly good order, heated by steam good water supply from the city water work* hardly enoug'i ilush to wat^r closets. There is ao labor for prisoners, nor is tho discipline of tho jail very rigid. Tramps are received on orders irorn trustee or polioo. Charge of in and out fees and one day's b9ard ia made from each one." "The asylum is located close to Crawf' rdsviUe on a farm of 180 acres of good land, 160 of which are tillable being near town it is valued at 8100 or more par aero. There is a very g-jod garden, but no orchard of any aocount some small fruit has recently been set out. The house is a commodious building of brick in very good condition anew wing built for a woman's department is of excellent construction. The hunting is by Bteam nnd woll arranged. Ventilation is good, especially in tho now wing. Sex separation is complete there are separate dining rooms. Thoro are excellent bath tubs and lavatories ull inmates bathe weekly and some cases oftener. Clothing and bedding good and ample. Cleanliness all through the house is excellent. There is an ample water supply from the city water works wat2r:siosets iu each department with good flush. Tho only criticism on the house is the lack of sitting rcoins at present the oorridors are used for this purposo. This asylum is rv creditable to the county and tho superintendent. Tho bath tubs, lavatories and water olosets aro superior to those of any other asylum in the State. Ihe Superintendent's salary is $800, ho fur. nishing two cows and four horses. The annual net cost is about $2,900 average number of inmates, 37 weekly erst per inmate, about $1.51."

A Christmas Present.

We take both pride and pleasure in annouaoing the completion of tlio greatest publishing enterprise of the year. Wo refer to our new reprint of tho ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britanniea.

This Is ono of che most notable achievements In tho history of book-maklnu. Not only have the plates of the entire twenty-five volumes been made In eight mouths—a task which other publishers declared would require two years—Out during this time twenty-two tuousand complote sets of tho work (550.000 volumes) have been sol', the last volumes now being ready for delivery. To print these books, forty of the largest cylinder presses havo beonkeptiunnlng steadily for six months. The mutu' ial used in making theEe books includes 1,080,000 lbs. of paper, 450,000 lbs. of binder's board, 8S.000 square yards of cloth, 1,(50,000 sheets of genuine gold leat.

Th«se books placed In one pile would roach lJi miles high, or three tlmos the height of the highest mountain in the world. If placed end to ond they would make a eontlnuous line 87 miles In longth. If the single leaves were placed end to end they would roach 38,000 miles, or over ono and a half times around tho earth.

But what is of more Interest to the public is tho fact that this set or Britaanlca, at tho price at which it lias been sold, is tho grentest baigaln over known in tho book trade. There ts no exaggeration in this st atement. Tho oldest book dealers pronounce It a marvel. The unheard of sale which has already beon mide shows the public appreciate this foCt.

No recent event in the publishing world will prove of so great and lasting importance to the public as the completion of this enterprise, which places the Great Britannica—the crowning work of all literature—at so small a fraction of its original cost, thus bringing it within the reach of tho humblest citizen.
