Facts Worth Knowing.

In all diseases of. the nasal mucous membrane tho remedy used must be non-irritating. The medical profession has been slow to learn this. Nothing satisfactory can De accomplished with douches, snuffs powders or syringes because they are all irltatlng, do not thoroughly reach the eitectod surfaces, and should be abandoned as worse tlmn failures. A multitude of persons who /uhad for years borne all the. worry and V-pain that catarrh cad Inflict testify to "'-radical cures wrought by Ely's Cream

WISE AND OTHERWISE. —The tiekits /or ItiiUy \vi bo en salo in the morning. -The King's Daughters and Bible Workers will meet on Friday af ornoon for-study. —The Ladies' Missionary Sooioty of the First church will meet at 2 o'clock oa Thursday at'terncon, -A. F. Hjury, Coroner, gave a verdiot yosterday that. Geo. Warbinton oatne to his death by suicide. —The Sons of Veterans will not meet to-morrow night as nsutil but on Wednesday evening of next woek. -Agents wanted everywhere for -'The Life and Trial of W. F. Pettit." Write W. M. White, Orawfordsyille, for terms. -The ladies of tlie third seotion. of tho M. E oliuroli will give a social in the church parlors Thursday ovening, Deo. 4. Refreshments will be served from 5 till 8 o'olook. —Officers of Montgomery' Lodge,

No, 50, F. & A. M., were elected as follows: Darwin S. Enoch, W. M. Fred O. Bar.dle, S. W. Jere West, J. W. Charles Goltrn, Treas. Lucien A. Foote, Socy. James Wright, Trustee ihi'oo yours.

A Oharitable Opinion,

The Western Christian Advocate, the org in of ttio MJtliodist ohuroh in tho Central WeBt, thus expresses its opiu ion on tho verdiot iu tho Pettit case. Th9 conservative tone and charitable views of the Advocate -night be prolitibly emulated by some who weekly peruse its coluinus. The Advocate sajs:

Tne most exoiting interest in Indiana and elsewhere for the paBt few weeks, has been the trial of Pettit which term inated on the 20th inst., by a verdiot of guilty and a penalty of imprisonment for life. It is a case that has been long ponding in the courts, aud that has at traded interest by the high character of the accused and his respeotable connections in life. A doubt is left in the public mind whother the scales of justice this case have hung even. If it has been oorreotly reported, any mm is liable to imprisonment for life whoso wifo throws around

poiFon,

or is addict

ed to its use OH was Mrs. Pettit. Anderson himself, the prosecutor in the case, would hardly lie safe. If, on tho other hand, tho scales did swing clear, Pettii's punnishment is none too severe, and he should thank God that lie has so long a time for repentance. The infi del and ungodly will rejoice becauso it is a preacher but tho true lesson to be learned is, that thore is no plaoo this side of Paradise where the shafts of Satan may not reach us, and that everywhere the injunction iapeitiment^utch and pray,

Sut prised.

Last evening about forty of. the friends of A. A. McCain ussembled at his :home on east Wabash avenue at 8 o'clock, and when he returned half an hour later from tea with a friend he found tho house in their posses3ion. It was a complete surprise and in honor of his 22nd birthday. F. L. Bhnll in behalf of his frionds presented him an elegant smoking jaoket and then all proceeded to an enjoyment of the occasion. Refreshments were served at 11 and the evening passed in musio and dancing, Eddie Brandkamp officiating at the piano. The affair was engineered by Jim Johuston, whose reputation as a manager of surprise partieB const tly grows.

The Value of Y. M. 0- A. MemuerstupBesides the moj-al and sooial benefits a membership in the Y. M. C.A. oilords sometimes it is the cause of a financial saving. Forinstanoe, at the. foot ball game at lud:auapolison Thanksgiving day, those who presented Y. M. C. A. membership tiokels got in for a quarter while all others were charged fifty cents This explains tho apparant unfairness of the Indianapolis Y. M. C. A, which was severely criticised in eome quarters. .--'T1:,' 5

In Front of the Organ.

As has been annouced the choir of the M. E. church hus been somewhat out of humor on account of the order of the music oommittee that they should not occupy the space in front of the organ. The choir failed to materialize Sunday in consequence. Last night the official board invited the choir to return nllowiug them tho privilege of selecting their seats wherever they might olicose.

Open Houso.

Tho Y. M. C. A. will keep openliouse on New Years day from 3 iu tho ufternoon until 9 o'olook in the evening. There will bo programmes of musio at 4, 5, 7, and 8 o'clock and everybody young ohd old, malo and female, are in vited and urged to oall. Light refreshments will be served. The Ladies' Auxiliary is taking the lead iu the re eeption.

James EeiUy as the Broom-Maker. While not possessing that personal magnetism to so great a degree as Em met, yet from his first entrauce on the stago Mr. Rielly is i?n rapport with his audience. His.impersonation of Yohann the Broom-Maker, is characterized by a hearty manliness, graoe aud refinement, and a lightness in aotion tliat quiokly captivates theatre goers. As a siuger, there is now no German dialect comedian on the fctage who isliis equal. His voice is strong and resonant, and he can electrify an uudienoe with his yodling. His humor is unctuous and never descends to vulgarity. His sucoess laf-t Saturday evening was unique and the applause showered on him during the evening ought to convince him that ho will be given a cordial reception on future appearance^.—Indi anapolis Sentiual, Nov. 25, 1890.
