Don't believe it, perhaps? Very well. Go-to your own store and get a Kabo corset and, if it breaks in a yeah go back and get your money.

President Harbison's second annual message was read in the two Houses

of

Congress yesterday. The point of greatest interest was that of the tariff question which he discusses in a most vigorous style. He

law and says there is no wisdom the suggestion that the subject be re-in opened before the law has had a fair trial. The entire message is good reading and contains muoh information that will be valuable to the people as well as to Congress.common

The Cincinnati Enquirer has been taking prospective and retrospective views of the late lamented campaign, and, whil« it congratulates the Demoo racy upon a temporary success, oautions that vivacious party to not be too confident of the future. It says:

tbe

There is no doubt that

tariff ques

tion played a great part in this year's campaigns but there can not be too frequent impression of the great truth that there were several other questions perhaps equally commanding. The people followed the passage of the Mills bill with a Republican House. They followed the enaotment of the McKin ley bill with a Democratic House.

Mr. W. D. Ho wells writes in iiarpcr* Magazine strongly in favor of signed newspaper articles, not only editorials, but all other contributions. He say9, "Every editorial, every smallest piece of reporting that involves a personal matter, should bo signed by the writer, who should be personally responsible for his words."

Let us see. There is the great boss and chief of a thundering metropolitan daily. It bellows around the world it# influence is felt from pole to pole. Its editorials are famous for wit, sarcasm and far insight into things. The editor of that great journal sometimes hits it, even when he drops into prophecy. He gets letters from many quarters congratulating him on his wit, his foresight, lii& power of slinging English. How would it do to let a howling outside world know that all this work that thrills the globe iB from the hand of a little stoop shoal' dered, long haired fellow up in aback room, whom nobody knows, and who works for small pay? Such knowledge would destroy the discipline of any great newspaper office in Christendom.

Again, how would this sound? 'Bridget Maloney, of Jenkins square, poured kerosene on the kitchen fire to hurry it up last •washday. The funeral of tho fingers that were found will take place to-morrow, (Signed) J. Augustu* Van Artrrelda."

One of the floor tivuJkers, in speaking of the scene after the bargains had been exhausted, said: "The store looked tiko a battlefield after a preliminary skirmish. In my vicinity there were twenty women, all of whom hail fainted from their struggle to secure a part ot' the allotment of challies. They wvru laid out carefully upon the ruf 3 which had been taken from stock for their accommodation, each one with a clerk bending over her administering smelling salts or bathing ber head with cologne, working like beavers in order to get their patients around in time for closing the store. 'I suppuse that the sacrifice of dress goods cost the store upward of $2,000, but it gained this: For mouths tho women who succeeded in getting what thc-v sought, as well as the unfortunate ones, will not fail to visit the shop regularly every day to takeati.'-.ntageofany othor bargains which may be given unannounced. They will, each titno they come in, buy something, even if it be only a half dozen buttons, and the profits from these women, who would not, under any other circumstances, enter the place, will return the outlay of the firm many hundred per cent."—New York Times.
