fiev. E. T- Lane's Farewell
Pev. E. T. Lane delivered his farewell sermon at tho CLristian church yesterday morning, the subject being"fruit Bearing." A largo audienoe was present and tho seraion au able effort. In his peroration Mr. LAUO towered abova liis usual eloquence and many of his audience were moved to tears by his words of farewell. In the evening his subject was "Tho Law of Gravitation in tho Spiritual World." Tho house Was completely filled with aa intor6ted audienoe, and the sermon was one of tho best Mr. Lane has over delivered here. It was a sound, practical discourse, oouched in tho purest Euglish, and brightened with flushes of eloquence. Tho speaker has been importuned by many who heard it, to have it published, that it may have a general circulation, but his modesty will perhaps prevent its circulation in that manner.
Boy land's Affidavit.
A JOURNAL representative saw George Boy laud on Saturday concerning his affidavit to the effeot that Juror Imol hodexpresed an opinion on Pettit's guilt prior to tho trial. "Yes," said Mr. Boyland, "I made tho affidavit. A numbor of persons were in the habit oI oolleoting at the store at Garfield every night during tho habeas corpus proceedings at LaFayette. Comments were made on the evidence as it appeared in the papers and wo all expressed our opinion pretty freely. We wore generally agreed that ho was guilty. Mr. imol said, as near as I can remember, that when such men as Switzer and Hickman testified against him he was compelled to believe them, and therefore he must be a guilty man. I have two good witnesses to bear me out this statement,"
The Broom Maker,
An audience of several hundred persons witnessed a performance of the, now comody, "The Broom Maker of Carlsbad," by Same Iidey and his company at the Opera House Saturday evening. Tho play served to introduce to local theatae goers a comedian in the person of Mr, liuilly, who is duporior iL many respects to tho German dialect comedians now before the public, and who is doctined to attain tho same popularity enjoyed by J. K. Emmet in his primo. There aie many points of re-« semblance between him and Emmet in his best days, and those who always found pleasure in the latter actor's performances willingly conceded the great promise in this youug player.—Indianapolis Sentene).
