years. AMERICAN OKAPE GB0WING. Special Census Agent. Col. H. Gardiner finds that the capital invested in grapu growing ami winti making iu the United States is increasing at the rate of $10,000,000 a year, and that since 1S80 the *rea of ground devoted grape growing has increased 220,000 ivcres—over onehalf. The whole number of acres given tip to grape culture is 400,000. The whole capital invested in the gTape and wine industry is in round numbers $155,000,000.
California makes more thnu half of the wine produced in the Union. The v.-hole pri'dnet of the country is between 30,000,000 and 40,000,000 gallons. Moreover, seven-eighths of the California grapes go into wine, while four-fifths of the grapes grown iu the rest of the country are for table use. But the luscious niisin gr.tie grows in California alone, and of this the state will cure tins fall 2.000,000 boxes, worth not less '.Uan £5,000.000.
One striking fact ha* been discovered about California. The choicest varieties of grap'.ss from a dozen different localities and ciimates iu Europe will thrive almost better in California than they do lit homeJiiCol. Gardiner predicts that the day is hot far distant when the best Cahforaia wines will take rank openly with the most famous foreign wines lind hold their own. The largest vineyard and the largest wine cellar in the world are in California, both on the farm of Senator Leland Stanford, in Te--hatna county. The vineyard con tarns 4,000 acres, and t*o wine cellar has at present in it 1,000,000 gallons of wine and 300,000 gallons of brandy.
Finally, the more the American ik.uple come into the habit of eating grapes, the healthier, handsomer and happier they will be.
wmewtiat noled woman and hor husband, in trying to get & divorce from each other, have treated the world to a dose which makes scandal mongers laugh and decent peoply feel a nausea. Each haa told all he or she known of the other's evil doing. The story is tough: very tough on both sides.
The tale somehow makes a well wisheT of the rive feel discouraged. Ilo wishw theso quarreling spouses would keep their months shut. They have no right to offend the average good taste by tellmg all their pitiful and wicked story to the public. is unpleasant it is undignified. If a husband and wife are tired of each other and insist on a divorce don't let them go around telegraphing the 'wickedness of tho other partner to the world as a preliminary exensu. It •will mako the public think they are both so bad that it will bo a pity to part them and let them do separate liann to the world.
If you we dead l*nt that you will have a divorce, for the sake of tlio dignity and rtrmemetit of civilized humanity get it quietly and don't t*ll any more than you can help about tho wickedness of tho other party. If in tho few years since you were married that other party lias become aa bad as you say, perhaps you liad something to do with tnaking him or her so.
An experiment that will be watched with much interest has been begun at Evans ton, near Chicago. A number of ladies have formod a co-operative housokeeping association. The members of the organization will still liave their separate homed as they do now. They will, however, attempt to form one central kitchen and lauudry, where those necessary evils of civilized housekeeping cookirand washing clothes will be jterform. din co-operation. The families formiiig tho union will not then bo obliged tu i. ,vo each its sepiirate kitchen and smoky kitchen fire, with tho smell "f food permeating tho home, neither Wiwhtubs melting with steam and soapsuds Cooking and washing, it is hoped, will bo jierformed by the union away from tho uses cheaper and better than they can I done in the old fashioned way in the separate homos. Certainly if the go. a wishes of its fellow sufferers in msekeeping can help the association it will 1© a j^lorioM bqcoqbs.
