AN INTERVIEW.
MilS. SHIELDS TALKS FP.EELY OF PETTIT AND LITTLE DINE.
Blie Thought Pettit Was Innosent Until a Short Time fiofore the Habeas Corpus—Little Dine Has Buen
Writing to Her Father But Will Do So No More.
Mr.j. Shield's all during tlio trial very wisely kept her sentiments to herself, lut, nt tlio Mouon stat.'ou yesterday ufternouu us she started to West Monroe she talked freely ul all matters to Tut: JOUK.VAL repc rter. "We expect to roach home S itu.-d iy night, my brother and 1," she sai l, "iu plenty of time for Thanksgiving, and a real Thanksgiving it will be, too."
She asked how l'ettit was taking his sentonc-j, and on being told that ho was feeling badly and would n-.ifc see anyone she said: "My brother and I thought seriously of going to the ul to see him. Iu factwe would have gone if thoy hadn't made a motion for new trial. But then I suppose he did not care particularly to see us and we had nothing in particular to say to him."
Mrs. Shields' was evideutly iu a talkative mood, and it require.! only a fow questions to bring out what, in substance, follows: "1 was nover thoroughly oonviuood of the man's guilt until a short time boiore the habeas oorpus, athou^h I kurjw 11ittiu did not die ofau incidental dose whon stryohuine was found iu such large c]uautitio3. I believed that Mrs. Whitehead had done it, and alone, bu the rumors increased and it looked darker until I finally in the agony of doubt wrote Pettit, asking him in the name o! heaven to deuounce the woman and proclaim himself an honest man. I never hoard a word from him in reply to this, although he wrote to us regularly. It was then that our worst suspicions ver continued,]aud oh what agouy wo suffered. There were inontns when we hard ly slept a night. Yes, the vordiot please mo very much, oven bettor thau hanging I believe. There is only ouo thing I would add if it were in my power, and that is that every year on July 1-1, taa couviot should be taken to a dark solitary cell, thereto remain soveuty hours, the length of time my sister suffered. Iiot him be given broad and water, just enough to sustain life and thoro let remorse, if Buch a fooling exists ih him do its work."
When told, and for the tirst time it seems, of the particulars in the jury room she said she wished she could thank each one of them. "I had picked out Small and Conner as sure for conviction, but they all did nobly. And Mr. Andorsou was grand. I had been led to anticipate a good deal from him but ho went far beyond my expectations. And could anything have been more convincing than Mr. Haywood's plain but powerful opeuiug statement and his opening argument. This tower of strength, too, (pointing to Col. Wilson who sat near,) also doserves a grer.t part of the glory. I ad mire .Jndgo Snyder, but at times it did soom that his ruliugs wore unfair to the State. However, as the result is it is all the bettor." "Aro you acquainted with Prof. A. Darling?" "Yes," with a laugh, "1 know him slightly. He is a crank of course, but itisafa^t that ho examined Pottit.'s head and predicted that he would bo a murderer. I remember tho circumstance quite weil. It was in the storcabout 10 years ago. It made Pettit very angry but wo all laughed at it." "Were auy of Pettit's relatives hole duriug the trial?" "No. ho has quar relt'd with all them and thoy are not on speakiug terms. It was only after his indictment that his mother and sister, who live in
Oswego, mado up with him. No, I could tell you what they quarreled about, but I won't. It is unnecessary now but I do wish it could have got iu tho evidence. It. would have explained Home things aivay. Dr. Yeager received a letter from Oswego praising Pettit to tho skies as a Chiistiau and so forth, and it was signed 'Carrie Miller,' This re monibor, was after tho indictment. No»v 'Currie Miller' is tio more nor less than Pottit's sister, a divorced worn an using her husband's name. Tho choice language iu which it which in was couched aud its general style, load me to boliovo it was was written by Pettit himself and merely copied by her." "What is little Dine going to do(" "ahe will stay witli us," said Mrs.
Shields, and hor eyes brightening as she though of the little girl who is evidently the idol of her heart. "It is wonderful what a perfect understanding hero is between her aud Uncle Bob (Mr. Shields), lie seems to think as much of heras lie docs of our own fourteen year old daughter. Dine was 8 years old tho (ilth day of October aud is so sweet and blight. Sho knows nothing of hoi father's position and do.-s not even kuow that I am in Grawfordsville. IfJ'iho did that would excite her suspieiou Every other week regularly she writes to hor father and ho answers regularly, ilis lattors aro just such as a preacher would write to his child. Occasionally ho sends his love to "thoso who want it' but I can tell you a little of it goes a long way. Ho lias seutus word through hor lettoi to take her to Oswego to toe her grout grand parent as it is seldom a child gets to seo her ancestors so far back, but we shall not do it and you may be sure that if any of his people ever come to West Monroe they will not get past tho door. His last letter to Dine told her to address him next tinn at Lafayette, not Grawfordsville, but 1 don't think she shall ever write him another. I have had her writo to him thus long so that it could not be said on tho trial that I was prejudining her against him. But the estrangem en must oome and I don't think it will be a hard matter. Evon last summer when
I spout four weeks in South Beud I found on returning that sho had not written to her father all tho time I was jjono. Thero was a letter from him isking why sho did not answer his letter. I asked hor why sho did uot aud the little thing said,|"Why Auut Laura, )ou did not tell me to writo while you were gone, and I forgot all about i'.f A'hat shall I tell papa?" 1 told her to •.'xplain to him oxoctly as sho had to me uuil sho did so. If ho has a heart it oiust hivo boon out as with a k'.iii'o when he read that letter. Aud wheu I name out hero it was the same way. S ho stopped writing to him until I wrot to .ier to cont'.uuo. in all her letters there is no uewn of our family, you «nay iure, but she tells him all about tho weath'.r, her school aud play. Will she over kuow of hor fatlnr'o di^r uo.' Not from my lip.s. If bho lives long enough itmaycomoto liar froJI outsiders iu some way and thou we will jxpiaia it ill to her, but pjjr child, ever in her o^se may uot meau a gre^t while for she has not a strong canatiiutioii. "S jppooing Pofctit had bean acquitted do you think In wou:d hivj c.aimai Adine "He might hive dona it, soma of our friends hive suggested, just for spite aud theu pat her in soma orphau's asylum but I c.ia hardly believe it. He knows he could make no lume for hor and tli.it she is bdttei-off where shs is." "J-)oo.i sho remember Shawnee Mound and the people there?" "O, yes, perfectly. She has all hor dolls named after her young friendb there aud sha will take them visiting, iu hor play, to various members of the family oaliing them after her udult friends at Shiwuee."
Tho train pulled iu and a most interesting interview was brought to close.
