He accepted some of the invitations and refused others. Kroni the well hmmii character uf tlie men with whom he associated I winder bow he escaped ruin more than once. His coitservat ism never deserted hit i, and beneath his uncouth exterior wa.i a tenacious intellect, wonderfully sharpened by cmtact with the world.

Now all tlirou-h these years he hail been studying one thing more than all else: Theodore Welluian

business hab

its. He learned what, tin- banker's favorite stocks for speculation were, through whom he dealt, and niauv details unnecessary to repeat le-re. At. last came Hie iamous ".Shawnee railroad deal." Tlie common stock of this road amounted at par to £!n.(jOO,t)ul, Jut it ruled in the market at about 00.

It was one of the "fancies" in which Mr. 'Y--lbiian delighted to .-.peculate. A selling movement began in this stock ••ne day and it proceeded from Wellmans house, lhe price had jroiie down a lull point, when an obscure broker on thelloorol the exchange began to take every block of it that was ottered. The decline ceased and a contrary inovenient set in. Still this obseuiv broker bought, hverybody began to rush for his Shawnee and olTer it to this broker, and pretty soon the question ran from mouth to mouth: hom do»'.s Drown represent?"

Nobody could tell. Lp went the prieo of Shawnee and at tin' close of tin day's proceeding* it was quoted at ?U. The next day the movement enntinued and leading among the sellers was .Mr. Theodore Wellman's broker. Kvcrv effort as made to break the mvsierious purchaser, but without avail, and at the end of trading Shawnee was at 1KI, with a record of three thousand more shares sold than were in existence. On the third day tin,* effort to break the purchaser ended in ottering to him a lot of stock sent from a distant city by social train. Kvery share was taken.

The bears were in despair. They had to get Shawnee stock with which to fulfill their engagements to deliver. The obscure broker was ready to sell, but he wanted something like WlO

nr

his shares.

It meant ruin to many, and there w.-re several speedy suspensions. Among them was the house of Theodore Wellman.

Soon after the announcement a messenger brought word to him that if he would call at Drown'* oiUce a proposition for a settlement would be laid lefore him. He went over at omv and found others of his ruim-d associates on the same errand, but lie alone was admitted in a baek room. There sat Dmiel Hardy, somber as of old, but tin-re was an expression of cold satisfaction in his

"You, Mr. Hardy!" exclaimed \V. 11man. I lardy made no reply at once, lbstock still, looking straight at the ruined speculator. W.-llman appreciated the •dtnation immediately, and sinking with a groan into a chair, !n» covered his face with his hands. I'resently liar ly spoke. "I understood that you fiev'centrr.eted to deliver "bout two thousand ore sh-- .Ts of Shawnee than was over took out of the stock b'ikt"

Wellman nodded. "llni," ci mt uued 1 lardy "some of tit. sheers in tin-t safe in thecoruer: pra'tieally all the re?t of them as was i-ued is in my control, where I kin git 'cm when I want "em. Kf I understand it. that means that you hev got to settle with me at my own tigger. Ain't tliet so'r" "It is. Mr. Hardy," groaned Wellman "I'Vaps," went on the torturer. "p*r*aps you may be able sed thove lictishyous !2.00() sliaies to a someh- uly for suthin', but 1 don't kecr for 'em. I.emme see. I think you clever people, you with the eddieated intellecks, calls this arrangement a corner. I believe you used that word to me once. Didn't you?"

Wellman's answer was a convulsive shudder. Then.* was silence for a moment. and then Hardy fairly shouted: "I/ok up, Mr. Wellman!** .Startled, the broken speculator raised his head. Hardy stood up, and looked down at him for a fuil minute. Then he said slowly: "I've been iookin' for'ard to this a long time, an' now you've got to sett le, an'you can't, you can't do it." "For (.Jod'ssake, Darnel IJardv." cried Wellman, "do not continue this useless cruelty. I am in your power. You have ruined me it will take mueh more than I po* ess to satisfy your claim, but name your figure and let me do my best." 'H'! iielty, is it? I fuh. I s'pose 'tis. That's what I've cornered ye fer, I could ha' thrown you over the falls at D« »sket. Now I've licked you at your own game."

Wellman was completely breken by, the sudden blow, morally as well as financially. Hi nerve and dignity left him, and for an hour Daniel Hardykept him fawning, begging and crying in abject misery. Tin other ruined men were admitted aud a settlement w. arrangetl oil term* that need not he de. tailed here. Some of the unfortunate-, have not- yet covered. Wellman's apparent failure was the worst of alt, hut to everybody's surpri he secured credit Soiu« where that enabl. him to slowly pick him-ejf up.

The fact i«, that Daniel Hardy, having glutted himself with -venge, felt something as near a-? revulsion of feeling as his hard nature woui admit and within went y-fi ur hours of the scene in Drown private room he had secretly supplied the credit that his enemy's housenecded.

The Shawnee deal was hi first great, pernlion, and his InM of any kind Wall street.

KxeepV in names, this recital is one ot facts. The man and the woman, the hen* and the heroine, still live. Many men in Wall street today will recognize them, oven under the film}* mask 1 have given to their identity. 7£tr. KNP.
