THE WHITE MAN IN AMERICA. In the concluding one of hia interesting papers on "M in and Nature in America," in Scrilinnr's Magazine, Professor N. S. Shaler sums np the effect of tliu clhnatie couditdon iu this part of the world on the development of the hninan race. People from all the nations of Europe have found lodgment here, and though it is yet too soon for them to be 'welded into a homogencona mass, yet as far tia they have got they show Bome marked features which are evidently a result of onr climate.
North America is dryer, has more sunshine and hotter and colder seasons than the regions* in the corresponding latitudes of Euroite. How have these influenced the American man? The popular belief is that ho is thinner lays on less adipose than his Enropean brother though the fat specimens oue encounters among both men and women in the older cities of the Union seem to contradict this notion.
The typical American is tough and wiry, has no end of endurance, like a wild mustang of the plains. It is in evidence that during onr war a larger percentage of soldiers suffering from dangerous gunshot wounds recovered than is the case with European soldiers wounded in battle. Dr. Brown-Sequard declr.res that it is harder to kill an American rabbit than those of Europe. He found this out in the course of his experiments in vivisection. Professor Shaler might have mentioned, though he does not, the stoicism and insensibility to suffering of tb'-se oldest specimens of pun: American!*, the Indiana. May not ages of our peculiar climate have toughened the Indians and rendered their nervous system luss liable to shock?
The professor finds that with all oar reckless exposure of life, our overwork and liability to accidental death in this new land, we live ifi long as the people of Europe- do, and our descendants are going to live ill longer. TIKS American raceiior.se is the equal of any anywhere. In the ordinary field sports that determine so larirely the physiciil constitution and native viir, of a people, we are in no way behind the old country nations. Ihiring tho war the United States sanitary commission took accurate measurements of about 250,000 Union soldiers. 'Hie measurements show that onr men. notably tlio-e from certain parts of Ken tncky and Tennessee, are as splendidly developed vhysically as any in civilizatiou
Kecent strikes have given ripe to this question as between employer and em ploye: \YI the mutual interests of both are e«|' ,ally in»jlwd in an industry, and when ".he labor of the employes! equally wit'., the capital of the employer brings pior .erity to both, is the work man any more dependent on the mooter than the master is on the workman, nod has the laborer as much claim to heard and to have hiB rights respected as the man who hires him?
California has at length found a way to get rid of the grape phylloxera which for a time threatened tho destruction of her vineyards. Certain wild native grape vincn do not have the plague. These are called resistant vines, and on these are grafted the choice foreign varieties of grape that thrive BO well California.

Oomic Opera.
Ail operatic event at Music Hall thlssoa" son will bo tho appearance horo of the Mario Greenwood OixSra Co., in that gem of comic operas "Boccaccio"' b.v Franz VonSudpo's. It will bo presented iu a manner that will rolloct credit on all.cooncerned, with a company well equipped in every sense of the word. Costumes entirely new, a chorus ot young and fresh voices, secoud to none cntour this season. Miss Greenwood's voice has recoived favorable^ mention everywhere. It is a soprano of beautiful quality, wide range and with great sympathy In tone and delivery, and one that you could never tiro of hearing. A little tribute to her worth wo append. It is from a reliable scource: "An overflowing house assembled at the Arch Street Theatre to greot tho Marie Greenwood Opera Co. in the bright aud ever-pleasing opera, "LaFillo do Madame Angot." Miss Greenwood a stranger to Philadelphia, made a distinct hit in the title role. When she stepped on the stage in the first act she received generous appiause, ami »he was everybody's favorite when the curtain went down on tho last. Her voice is a wonder. Of slight figure and delicate appearance, it secuis impossible that she should have much power, and yet, no matter what volume of voice sho uses, there always seem to bo moro, and more, and more."
