HOUSEHOLD FAVORITE.

A young girl here had been suffering for 12 years with blood diseases until she had lost the *use of her limbs and was subject to many trou-bles-incident to the disease. The physicians declared her case incurable and predicted that her life would come to a speedy end. After taking S. S. S. she recuperated so fast that it was plain that she had obtained anew lease on life, and she has continued to gi jw better until her permanent cure is assured. Many other pa. tients in our hospital haw obtained signal benetit from S. S. S., and it has becon.e quite a fa« vorite in our house.

About ltip VM Winkle. Joseph Jeffers.jn etuis that exqnisite autobiography of his this month iu The Century. This last installment is taken up largely with the genial, kindly philosophy that is a lending characteristic of the man who immortalized Rip Van Winkle anew.

For one thing Mr. Jefferson discusses the oft disputed question whether an actor or speaker should forget all about himself in what he has to say, or whether he should preserve throughout an edacated self consciousness that enables him to watch every expression of his audience and take advantage of it. Jefferson says it depends on the person that each must find the method best adapted to his own particular case. He remarks:

One believes tliiit he must feel the character he plays, evuu to the shedding of real tears, while the other prafora never to lose himself for an In stnut, anl there Is no iloubt that they both act with moreHrect by adhering to their own dogmas.

For niystilf I know that I act best when the heart is warm and the head Is cool. In obterr lug the ivorks of great palntora I And that they have no conventionalities exoept their own hence they are inaMers, and each Is At the head of Ilk. owu school. They are original, and could not imitate even if they would. Su with acting

A considerable portion of ttiis closing paper is taken up by study from his own standpoint of his most famous character, Rip Van ^Yinkle. A lady.once asked him: */,j} "Why don't you have ii dog in the play)'1

I rep!i,Hl ilial I dialiked realism In art, and realinn u'.ive, with a tail to wag at the wrong ilmej. would be abominable.

Hut don't you think that the public would like to see Schneider!" "The public couhl not pay him a higher compliment, for it *hnwj bow great an interest they tnke in an anhnal that has ueve, been exhibited. So, no 'hold the mirror up to nature,' If you like, but don't hold nature up—a reflection of the thing, but not the thing itaolf. How badly would a drunken man gire an exhibition of Intoxication on the stage! Who shall act a madman but one who Is perfectly sane! Wc must not bo natural, but appear to be so." "One question more and I hare done. Why do you not refuse the cup thot Qretchen oilers you at the end of the play!"

To which I rrpM'-i: "Should Rip refnso the cup the drama would become at once a temperanct play Thid subjfet haa both ita adherents and IU op|Mnents, aud has moreover of late beooiu* a political quiation. Tlio action would hare a Acal and eveu a in'-dprn flavor 1 should aA soon ex fiect to hear of Cinderella striking for high wages, or of a 5|wcch on woman's right* from Old Mother Hubbard as to listen to a tAnperance lecture rom Hip Van Winkle It would take all the [oetry and C.iiry tale ele.wnt 'completely out of it."
