in tho yard. Yeoger said at his his first visit patient was nervious and in somewhat of a ohill, stomach iritatod and patient was vomiting at second visit ho loarnod that she had been troubled with malaria prescribed modioinos and on his next visit thought sho was getting well. At the uoxt visit which was Tuesday sho was worse. Tho diagnosis was that it was malarial poisoning Dr. Yongor suggest oil and nlso witness, that siio had typhoid svmiHoms it is fact sho had typhoid syn ptoais. Xux vomiou is commonly found in tho pills givou tho patient Dr. Youger said lio htul not given quinine in sulliciont quuuti' ties as patient did not liko to take it, Tho eauso of the stupor was tho result of malarial poisoning, not anesthetics boouuse it lastod too long for that at that consultation calomel and oil were prescribed tho culomel was to be given immediately (1 o'clook) uud the next dose in threo hours the oil was to be given 4 hours oftor tho last dose of calomel gave Pottit instructions to put whisky in oil and have it warmod whisky and oil need stirring to make them mix Dr. Yeager never mentioned stryolinmo poisoning at cor imitation neither did he mention convulsions hi did, however,| tell of paroxysms. Yeager asked witness if he had ever had a case of malarial poisoning Pettit went to the yard with both the doctors and asked about the condition of his wife witness replied that the case was hopeless arrangements were made for witness to oome back next morning received a telegram that morning from Pettit it was about 10 o'olook and witness immediately drove to Shawnee Mrs. Pettit hod been dead a half hoar when tie arrived witness was snbpoened by the State and was here in response to it ready to testify saw a case of ideopathio tetanus at Indianapolis in 1873 sinoe July 17, 1889, have not seen Dr. Ysager until this trial began. The eyes of Mrs. Pettit were olosed in death.
Cnoss—While waiting for Yeager that night did not go to sleep. On tiie habeas corpus witness testified there was no rigidity of arms or legs and it is true. Don't know positively that the patient was not under the effect of anestheties. They might have administered while witness was there bnt hardly probable. Don't know that nux yomioa was given the patient. Testified before the first grand jury Nov. 12, 1889. If witness testified then that ho received a telegram at 12 and arrived at 2 he was mistaken. Does not remember at the habeas corpns of answering the question whether Pettit told him about giving tho tea and of the convulsions and of saying to Pettit "Yes, Dr. Yeager mentioned them," in the negative nor of answering the affirmative the question whether Pettit did not mention this at all but that Dr. Yeager did.
At seoond grand jury don't remember whethor his testimony at first grand jury was read to him or not but it was made apart of his testimony then. Witneess thinks he mentioned the stiffness of the bowels at the habeas corpus. May have used the term "relaxed" in regard to the condition of the body at the habeas oorpus and before the seoond grand jury. (The question as to the conversation between witness and Pettit before Dr. Yeager arrived Wednesday morning was objected to and the objection sustained.) Dr. Yeager said he noticed fever first on Tuesday morning a history of the cose was given witness before Dr. Yeager arrived but not in full Pettit gave him the history the dofense asked the witness if anything bosido his own examination and Dr. Yeagor's information influenced him in making a diagnosis of the case and witness replied in the negative. Pettit said she had symptoms of malaria before she went to South Bend and was still suffering from it when she returnsd. Nothing was said about convulsions or poisoning.
RE-DIRECT.—Witness did 'not ask Pettit for history of tho case. Yeagor said ho had given dignitahs and pill containing morphia and atropia did not mention aoonito.
HEOIIOSH.—Yeager mentioned bromide ol' potassium, hydrate of chloral and chloroform.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON, if DB. BLACK. RE-CIIOSS.—Was at the parsonage about 15 minutes on Wednesday don't know whoro he went from there but went south. Spoke of the typhoid symptoms at the habeas oorpus but maybe not before the grand jury. The doctor was then exensed.
A. C. MOCORKLE.
Went oast with Pettit and his wife's body. On the night of the return staid all night at the Lalir House with Pittit. Pettit asked witness to tell David Mehurry to send his buggy to West Point for him witness did so tho witness then identified a letter of his own to Mrs. Shields in answer to her letter of inquiry. Tho Stuto objected to its being introduced as evidence and were sustained. The dofense took exceptions and oxcu..od tho witness. The defense then made a call on tUo State to procure Dr.O'Ferrall. They announced that he would bo horo in a few minutes coming on tho train, but just then a letter wus handed to Haywood from him announcing that ho was very ill and threatened with pneumonia. Kumler said tho defense wanted him for cross examination and wanted him bad. Haywood said lie would try to havo him Monday. Kumler th.n said the.defense was unwilling to proceed until the examination of O'Ferrall was complete.
MRS. BORUM
Saw Mrs. Pettit the evening of her return at David Moharry's sho said slie was tired and had a pain in her back.
Kumler then said that was all the witnesses they had at hand although they had notified a number. The Judge then commissioned A. O. McOorkle to notify Yeager and several others to show up next Monday morning.
As there were no more witnesses the oourt adjourned until Monday morning both sides vigorously protesting that they were not to blame in the matter and the judge deolaring that ho could
blame noither. The jury passed out thoroughly disgustod.
NOTES.
A. B. Anderson will oloee the oase for tho State. Mrs. Shields now hears tho evidenoo having a seat in the northwest door,
Bets on disagreement and acquittal are running about oven. Mrs. Aaron Walluoo and Prof. Hainos are tho coolest witnesses yot put on tho staud.
Pottit is ovidontly as tired of tbooaso as tho rest of those connected with it, but is looking good deal fresher since hi.s case opened.
Prosecutor Haywood vigorously denies that Prof. Merrill accused liim of manufacturing evidence yesterday durin thoir difference.
Dr. O'Ferrol did not appear this morning to testify and as it was demonstrated that he was in Lafayette, a bailiff was sout up to bring him down whether ho wished to oomo or not.
J. H. Barnstein, the drummer who so closely resembles Iiev. Pettit, who is being tried at Crawfordsville for the murder of his wife, was in the oity to-day, looking after his trade.—Peru Journal.
Dr. Rifile was a most amusing witr ness and kept the audienoe in a constant fmile. Onoe during the severe oross examination of Anderson he waived his hand and said with a suave smilo "Oh, you oau't make it appear that I'm not a good dootor."

TIIO Capitol Accident Company of Sprlnllold, III., lathe Company to Insure In,
The Trade lteviow la In reoolpt of many letters asking them to designate a cheap and reliable accident Insurance oonipany. Our correspondents all muko l.ho same complaint, viz: that some companies which are thoroughly trustworthy lire exhorliltant as regards rates, whilst others partake or the cheap and unrelln bio stylo ofinsuiance. Whilst one and all appreciate the advantages of Insurance which really lnsuiYs, thoro is a general disinclination evinced by intelligent men, to pay double what a thing is really worth. Having never investigated the real merits of the many uccident insur mice companies which ask tho patronage of the public we havo refrained from indicating a preference, and now only -.vhon tho matter has boon thrust upon us by tho widespread Inquiry and gonoral complaint reaching this ollice have wo decided to act In tho promises. Realizing at the outsot that to have any wolght to be entitled to tho coulidenco of our readers, no pecuniary consideration should enter Into the transaction, a trusted correspondent has jbeou dvlegated to Investigate and report upon the matter, with strict inductions to make no oharge for any endorsement we might feel justified In making, and to accept nothing which might, la any way, render the decision subject to suspicion. Acting under such advices the Investigation has boon made, tho relative merits and demerits of various companies have been the snbjoctof searching Inquiry and rigid examination Into not only policy but prlnciplo.
As a result wo have.no hesitancy In setting tho seal of our approval upon the Capitol Accident and Disability Co., ot Springfield, Illinois, aud rating It above any and all other accident aiid disability companies. The reasons for such marked preference can readily be given, tho force of which will convln«e every honest Investigator und satisfy every thorough business man. First the cost of Insurance Is small being only about one half what some leading companies exact from the Insured. This company pays full fifty-two weeks' loss of tlmo for disability caused by accident and does not deduct such payment In case of death. Lapsed members can be reinstated by resuming payment of Installments, not new membership foe or installmenss during lapso be demanded. Change of occupation to a more liazordous ono docs not forfeit tho policy. The strongest point in favor of this company ^outside of its inherent stability and trustworthiness) Is tho fair and equitable mannor it deals with Its members. Tho .Capitol Accident and Disability Company pays insurance in full, does not stand on mere technicalities and does not owe a dollar to any man .or to any beneficiary. Red tape has been thoroughly eliminated from the policy of this company other features of the Capitol are eminently wortiiy [of notice. It Insures against unprovoked assault und murder—most other companies do not. It does not reject a claim because a member gets hurt getting on or off a moving train at a station, all other companies do. It permits its members to travel and by any kind of conveyance, almost all other companies restrict to vehicles "specially provided for the transportation of passengers," Many other points in favor of this company could be cited. But with tho liberal and equitable policy or the company, its exemption from trilling technicalities and Its reasonableness of rates shown and given credit for—It remains but to ask— "Is it reliable?' Wo will answer this question by saying It Is.—Chicago Trade Review.
C. M. Scott Is agent for this company In Crawfordsville and has paid out more money for accidents than all other aocident companies, doing business In this olty combined. Call and «ee him in tho City Clerk's office, City building on Green street.
