A NOTABLE BANQUET
•Mguificant
A Dove A
mere ordinary
passing event was the dinner given to Roger A. Pryor by John Russell Young on tho occasion of Pryor's appointment to a judgeship in New York. It was a remarkable banquet because there, in the city where he was now honored,
i-Pryor
had once been a prisoner of war, held for being a Confederate general and fighting against his country. Valiant old Gen. Sherman, indeed, persisted at this very banquet in calling Pryor to his teeth a "rebel," thus stigmatizing also tho others who thought his way thirty years ago, though by common consent the word has been dropped from polite society. Moreover, Pryor, "Johnny" Wise, and others took the general's calling them names very good naturedly.
Moat htriking, however, was the great variety of thinkers and doers whom the dinner brought together. Hardly in a century are men
BO
differing from one
another brought harmoniously together, or indeed brought together at all. The New York World speaks of the gathering ars follows:
There were onJy thlrty-ehjht men gathered about the board, and yet they represented the most eminunt in nearly every walk of American life but the gathering was most remarkable In the contmrit which uas suggested by tho paet IWcs of th"*se who were brought into social con tact. Chauncey M. Depew, not only exchanging badinage with Henry George, but in warmly glowing term* presenting Grover Cleveland and John S. Wise, of Virginia, who, when still in his teens, carried the la*t dispatch from Jefferson Davis to Kobm E. Lee introducing to a distinguished body of men Gen. W. T. Sherman, the general of the United Statue army, who way prw«nt to do honor to one of the fiercest spirit* of the Confederate army—these situations alone would be sufficient to make any dinner tnemor
able.
"I am one of that class from whom, •when yon drop a dinner into their slot, you get speech," paid John S. Wise, of Virginia, at the banquet to Jndgo Roger A. l'ryor.
Signor Crispi snvs of the armaments of linropo that aro assuming huger and huger proportions constantly, "These armaments will end by ruiuing Europe for the benefit of America."
It is to be regrettod exceedingly, if, a6 haB been cabled to America, lt Uy will not be represented at tho World's fair at Chicago. The committee of Italian citizens at Home who had the matter in hand reported that they found very few manufacturers willing to send goods to Chicago. The trade inducements wore not sufficient under our existing tariff law.
Kailwny engine building baa been brought to so nice a point in Great Britain that thero aro on tho London and Northwestern railroad 2,000 engines that will take the same boiler, A change of eighteen bolts will transfer a boiler from one engine to another. What will astonish Americans still more is tho assertion of the chief engineer of this road that he believes he could run au engine around tho world without losing a pin or gotta ng a hot box. That engineer ought to como to America and try his hand on some of tho trains that convey excursion parties from the -west, to Niagara Falls.
Tho funeral of Mrs. Booth, called the Mother of the Salvation Army, attended as it was by 20,000 people moving as one man to the least sign given by their commander, shows tho remarkable discipline attained by tie followers of that anny. The Salvation Army is assuming tho proportions of one of tho old crusades. Ii. its way it ia almost as remarkable as they were. Extending around tho world from India to western America, as its ranks do, it begins to have an infinenoe that iiono dreamed it could wield. It seems to have money and power at its oall. It does not yetoomznaod rtBMet knt it oommaads"
SHALL OKAWFORDbVILLE DIE?
The Question of Establishing a dreamery For the Benefit of Both CJicy and County.
This Is a question in which every man woumn snd child in the county Is interested. Active .men are starting up new enterprises ali over the country. Crawfordsville men are waiting for some one to como from abroad to take the risk of investing here. Our business houses aro empty, our dwellings aro seeking in vain for tenants. "For Rent" is written in many doors and windows. Our men of moms aro standing around with their hands in tholr pockets wondering why Crawfordsville doe not grow. There is no uso denying the fact that Crawfords vil'.o, once^the most thrifty and growirg town in the State, has lost its vitality and is at the verge of a state of sleepy inactivity, nnd unless we awake from our lethragy and infuse souio new life into the drowsy, listless denizens of the place, the next census will And us in a state of utter decay, and when decay once sets In it never stops. We have now an opportunity to start, and build up an enterprise here that will benefit not, only the city, but the whole county. Some gentlemen are preparing to start a butter factory that will use up all the milk for miles around the city. It is to be on the new plan for extracting the butter from new milk, known as the centrifugal process. Such factories are being erected In many places and they are doing well for new enterprises. One is going up at Shelbyville, one Is In successful operation in Lafayette, another is being erected at liensselaer, ind others at various points lni out State. Some one will of course ask If there is not danger that tho?e factories will overstock the market. Not at all. It will not add materially to the amount of butter made In the country, -it is simply a change In tho avof marketing it. It is the same kind of a change that took place in the manufacture of woolen, cotton and linen goods when wo abandoned manufactures in tiie household and sent out raw ma teiini to the factory. It is simply proposed to set away In the garret the churn with tho old spinning wheel and reel, and send the raw material to the factory to be made into the (inisheu product. It will lessen the work of the household and afford better butter, at loss expense of labor, for the churning is all done by stesm instead of the muscle of the housewife.
Now will the people of Crawfordsville and vicinity do something to secure tills factory? The gent'emen who are at the head sf the enterprise propose to invest their own means in it largely but they want help, not by means of donations, but as stook, which they propose to make profitable to all tho stockholders from the start. There will be a meeting of business men and capitalists at the court houso.Tuesday night to consider this matter, and it Is to be hoped there will be a large turnout.
