litmus or Til KKI'IUII.ICAN STATE COMMITTEE IXIIAXAI-OMS,INM., Oct. 27, LS'.K). To tho Republicans of Indiana— ictory is within our roach, but much work must be douo to secure it, Our advices from all parts of the State are of such a character as to satisfy us that cilicient work from this time on will give us the State as well as an increased representation in tho Legislature and in Conyress. Absent voters should be 'nduced to return and vote. The voters should be instructed bow to vote. A full vote should be secured. If these things are done, we are certain to carry tho State.

After the Horse Was Stolen. Night before last burglats broke into Johnson's saloon and stole $.5, two revolvers and a box of clgare. They raised the grating and entered through the cellar. Last night new locks were put on the doors and tho saloon rendered burglar proof.

Nothing Too Bad Por Him.
Tadle King is again iu jail. Last evening he made a most brutal and «owardly assuit on old grandfather Houlihan with a chair and beat him in a most shamefu' manner. He will be tried for assault with intent to kill and it Is sincerely to be hoped that ho will receive a penit.ontlary sentenre. Eo is a brute and knows no law, and any man who would cruolly beat a feebio old man of 80 years ought to bo in the pen on general principles.

J. W. Fullen Is posted for a spoecli here to-night. Subject, "Where has tho money gone?" Tho people genoralyl concede that it Is gone where tho woodbine twineth. Matttc Lew Price, tho magnetic girl, has Hulett's hall to-night and am afraid J. W. will not get to tell his tale of woe. Poor John, I imagine his longings for Mike Prioo's place. YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. FRANCIS AOHESON, of Tippeoanoe knew Pettit remembered Pettit being brought to Coflrotb and Btuart's office in Lafayette laat winter by Turnkey Ben Osborn. Mrs. E, O. Whitehead was in the room with him all tho time heard no conversation.
CKOHS, by Stuart.—They wore in the room with witness, Ethan Meharry and Arthur Stoart tli9 witness then arose and said to the oonrt that he was busy on tho Day ton gravel road and wanted off for good he was then excused "for good."
Dlt. W. H. PETKHS
Then took the stand with an armload of books and DeHart took the cross examiner's ohair at the defense's table. Witness is a physioian and ohemist in Lafayette and a graduate of Purdue und tho Ohio medical college has tho degrees of B. S., M. S., and M. D. has been an analytical chemist since '82 was assistant State ohemist for two years under Wiley and Warder studlod.under Prol. Wiley, now of Washington D. O. have made a specialty of toxicology, tho soience of poisons have unalyas'id luimau bodies for poison in all eight bodies in course of 7 years has searched for all poisons and in some cuses found none never found stryoh uive except in the uno of Mrs. Pettit has used all tha standard obemicai works and keeps abreast of tho times, reading constancy works iu nil languages, especially the German mouthlies has read all the best works and manuals on poisons and applied all tests was employed on Nov. 20 to ana lyze tho body of HattiePittit for strychnin and brusia went to West Monroe with Haywood to make the analysis went to West Monroe from Ojwego with Haywood, Judgo Stowell and a man named Paul started for the home of Mrs. Laura Shields, tho sistjr of Hut tie Pettit met her husband, ltobeet Shields on the road and went with him to the house arrived thero Mr. Shields took his wife into a separate room and soon Stowell was called in after him HaywJod and finally tho witness after dinner they proceeded to the cemetery and Mrs. Shields pointed out the grave tho body WBB exhumed and borne by the witness, Shields, Haywood and Sexton Graves to a barn 100 yards a .\ay the coffin lid was removed and tho corpse exposed, covored with mildew Mrs Shields identified the retiihins as those of her sister Hnttie. (Here Mrs. Shields was oallod in and identified bv witness. As she retired Haywood asked that she might be permitted to remain and hear the testimony as she had been heard but the defense objected and she passed out.) After Mrs. Shields had identified the remains she left the barn, and the witness, in tho presence of Hoy wood and Graves removed tho shroud the features were distorted and the hand terribly cramped. Three front teeth wore gone there was a gold ring on little linger of left hand which witness took away with him. He made an iuoision from top of breast bones to the hip bone and exposed the vitals he then removed the stomach and small intestines, tho liver, the spleen and the heart and part of the brain and put them all iu separate glass jars he examined the heart, linings, gall bladder, brain and npper part of tho spinal cord and found no disease. He wrapped the parts taken out and put them in a sealed box, wrapped with oord. No one was present when he did this. The jars had been oleaned by sulphuric acid and distilled water. The parts he took away were the liver, stomach, spleen and half the brain. The box was made of inoh lumber and for the very purpose. No one touched the body except witness. The ooifin lid was then nailed down and witness helped carry tho body baok to tho grave. He then returned to the barn, put the box in his buggy, and drove to Central Square. He then left for home and reached there Nov. 25 at 9 a. m. Tin box had not then been disturbed as his seal mode by impressing the palm of his hand in tho wax was nnbroken. Took box to his laboratory and left it till 4:30 p. m., the doors and windows being sealed. He then opened the box, plaoeil stomaoh and intoitincs in evaporating dish and again sealed the box. At 8 p, m. he out up the walls of stomach and intestines into pieces and put them iu a .r containing alcohol, water and sulphurio acid. This was placed in boiling water for 12 hours to dissolvo strychnine, then poured the solution off and repeated tho experiment for 6 hours more and after filtering the eoiution several times added ohoroform to dis solve the fats. The ohloroiorm solution was separated from the acid solution. The latter was made alkaline. The former was filtered, boiled down and sulphuric aoid added to destroy all foreign matter and purify the strychnine. This was repeated until the final residue was clear and orystallinc. It was very bittor and gave the strychnine tosts. Sulphuric aoid did not color it. Bichromate of potash caused the colors) blue, livid purple, red and yellow followed in rapid succession. A'kiloid iorm of strychnine is soluble iu chloroform, ether but not in water, is very bitter and gives this color test mentioned. With the crystalline residue all these tests were mado successfully. He went through tho full prooess of analysis, using porcelain dishes, glass jars, bottles flasks and funnels all cleaned with sulphurio acid and distilled water. Ha was hunting for brusia and strychnine. Pound nono of the former. The amouut of alkaloid strychnine found was .385 grains, equal to .503 grains of the sulplate of strychnine. This was in stomuoli and intestines alone. Analysis will give alkaloid if the sulphate has been taken into the system. The sulphate is soluble in water. The med'cals used in tho tests were all pure, he having tested them on a piece of human liver not poisoned and none of the above results appearing. Mrs. Pettit'B liver weighed 30 ounoe. He analyzed of it and obtained 1-25 of a grain, making in all about of a grain. Some of it was necessarily lost in tho analysis. One half grain is necessary to cause death. Was positive the substance found was stiychalso examined brains but found no strychnine. Examined nothiug else but the embalmer's fluid in the abdomen which oontainod no strychnine.
He then had loft the heart, part of the brain, the snleon and half the liver. They are not now in his possession. Three months ago on the order of Hay, wool he took them to Walter Haines, of Rush Medical College, Chicago. They hod been kept in sealed boxes all the time. It took four or flye days to make the analysis and no one was ever prea-

ent. Had no strychnine in the lato atory. Also made a physiological test. Gave one frog a little over one-ninth of a grain of the crystalline stryohnino from the stomach, and it died after 8 hours of convulsions displaying all tho usual symptoms. Gave another frog tho same amount of strychnine of commerce and it got well in 10 hours after convulsions. Also introduced soir.e of the crystalline strychnine under the skin of a mouses baok and the mouse died. The crystalline form indicates purity. Tbo sulphate is soluble iu hot water or tea. Brusia is eubstance associated with Btryohnino in tho non vomica plant. A cup of tea will dis solve 480 grains of strycliniue. The tea would be very bitter. The prooess ho went through with would eliminate every other substance except brusia. One grain of strychnine would bo fatal. It aote on the spinal chord and is taken up by the blood as any article of food. It would likely be found in analysis in the stomach, heart, liver and spleen. It passes of rapidly in the uriue, perspiration and all secretions. It will take effect usually in half an hour. Being taken in a oapsule doses not retard its aotion. Oil does retard. Symptoms of strychnine pjisoning aro anxiety, twitching and sudden convulsions, during wnich the face is alternately livid and flush, the breathing hard, the hands clenched, feet separated and body arohed upward. Tho relaxation is complete between convulsions. The patient either dies from exhaustion or suffocation. If from the latter during a oon vulsion. The miud is alwayB clear and after relaxation the muscles are sore. There oannot be repeated convulsions hours after dose.
During this recital Pettit held his head in his hands and looked at the table. His attorneys did not seem worried in the least and laughed aud joked with each other. When oourt adjourn [Continued on pa»re4.|
