OsLAnoiiA

CITY,

0. T., Oct. 10.—Gov

ernor Steele, en route to Kingfisher to attend a Grand Army of the Republlo reunion, received warning that he would be assassinated if he passed through here because of his having vetoed the bill locating tho Territorial capital at this place. His informant said his intention to

go

to the en

campment was known in Oklahoma City, and that a plot had been formed by his enemies there to assassinate him in caso he passed through. Governor Steele was at first unwilling to believe that the Oklahom« City partisans would go so far as to contemplate violence to tho Chief Executive of the Territory, but his friend insisted that his information was trustworthy and beeged him not to proceed as far as Oklahoma City.

At the solicitation of his family and his friends ho left the train at a small station before reaching Oklahoma City and continued his journey by stage. The feeling against the Governor is Tory bitter and it is believed that desperate men would have carried out the threat had not tho Governor changed his route.

The situation of affairs pfrows out of the determined offort of Oklahoma City citizens to have the Legislature pass a bill removing tho capital from Guthrie to Oklahoma City. They sent a powerful lobby to Guthrie to present their case to thp Legislature, and camo near carryli% their point. Governor Steple is ft oitlzen of Guthrie, and has boon accused of being partial to his own city in the struggle for the capital. It was October that a riot was threatened. The House had reconsidered its vote locating tho capital at Oklahoma City. The partisans of that plaos feared defeat, and during a ljvefy debate Representative Perry, of Oklahoma, got tho original bill (having quietly obtained Speaker Daniel's signature) and was harrying over to the upper Uouso to push it through there when Guthrie sympathizers discovered tho ruse and rushed after Perry. The latter passed the bill to another Oklahoma sympathizer,

Nesbltt. Tho crowd threatened both Perry and Speaker Daniels, and a lynching seemed likely for awhile. Finally tho crowd learned that Nesbltt had tho bill. They pursued him four blocks and caught him, recovering the bill. Tho bill removing the Capital to Oklahoma City was finally passed, but Governor Steele vetoed it Since then the feeling against him has been vory bitter in tho defeated city. The press of that place has kept up a continual firo of abuse upon him, and to many the reported
