TWENTY-FIVE PF.NLSII.
SYRACUSE, N. Y., Oct. lfi.—What' proved to bo tho most disastrous flro' that has visited Syractiso for many' years was discovered In the Leland Ho-' tol at 12:80 o'clock thil morning. At 1:30 a. m. tho hotel was still burning,! but tho flro dopartmont had tbo' flames under control. There woro four dead bodios at different establish-, ments andono doad at St Josoph's Hospital. Those bodies havo as yot been unidentified. It will bo utterly impos-' (iblo to learn definitely how many were1 burnod to death whoso bodios will never be found.
Among tlioso injured is Cora Tanner, tho actress, who was soverely burned »bout tho head and foot. Sho was playing an engagement at tho Grand Operapouso and had a room in tho hotel. Every physician in Syracuse is on the ground. Most of those killed were on1 tho fourth and fifth floors. Frank Carey, of Glens Falls, N. Y., has been Identified as ono Of thoso that woro burhod to death.
An cyo-witness of tho flro says It is certain that at loast twenty-five' persons havo lost their lives, and many more havo been more or less injurod. Ono woman was being lowered from a window by the aid of a rope. Sho had reached a point opposite thp third story, when the rope became ignited (pom the burning sill, tho rope parted and tho woman fell to tho pavement—hor bratns Sashed out and hor body flattened into a shapeless mass.
Many people crazed with fright lost their lives by jumping from windows. OnO man says he 94w six peoplo jump from different windows on tho Fayetto street sldo of tho building within a spaoo of four minutes, and tho sight sickened him with its horror and ho was compelled to loave tho spot. Tho building was provided with both iron' f^re-oscapes on tho outsldo and ropos on. the Inside, whioh were tho means of saving many lives.
Bufnet Forbes, a stock brokor of this olty, oscapod into tho stroot almost entirely naked. Ho was slightly injured about tho hands.
Ono woman was found with a nursing babe in hor arms, orouchcd in a stairway, whero sho had been ovorcome by smoke. Sho was romovod by tho firemen, but has not yet rcgalnod consciousness.
A man and womnn wore seen looked in each other's arms In a window on the fifth floor at tho northeast corner of tho building. Below thorn was a porfect so a of flames. No possibility of eseapo. oxoept by tho window was opon to then}, and that seemed inevitable' loath. No assistanoo could reach them. Tho woman sootned to be anxious to jump, but her husband was eVnostly entreating her to desist. The orowd below waited with bated breath, Tho woman mado ono last effort to' jump, was restrained by her husband, and the cry of tho orowd signaled the wful end that must havo bofallen em as they foil backward Into tho' 'oom into a mass of flames.
At a window on tho fourth floor, almos£.directly under this, stood a woman surrounded on all sides by florco flames. 9\io soomed Irresolute as to whothor to jump to tho pavement or faco tho flory foe that was fast encroaching on her1 liborty and llfo. Sho stepped upon tho. Bill of the window apd placed her, hands above her head. People In. the street below shuddered and turnod. their faces to shut out tho horrlblo' Bight that must moet their gazo should1 tho woman jump to tho ground. The woman did not jump, but seemed to bo withheld either by foar or a fooling that oscapo would oomo from sorao other source. Who stoppod down from tho sill Into the room and remnlnod at the window but an instant, when tho wholo room bocatno enveloped in flames and sho sunk back from view.
Ono of tho most frightful Incidents of tho flro was tho torriblo death of a woman who jumped from tho fifth story of tho building. Several policemen stood on tlio 3ido\valk holding nets roady to cauih tho guests as they jumped, .'wo pr ions, a man and a woman, jumped Into ov u." the nots almost at tho same foment «*.. efjapod with broken limbs. ..ho noxl IJ jump was a woman who ap--varod in window on tho fifth story in he night-clothes. Sho loaped out of the window and, missing tho net, was dasuod to pieces on tho stono sidewalk. "5 was picked up and removed to tho morgue.
Tho shrieks of tho gtiosts and tho crackling of tho flamos could bo hoard for blocks aivay. Tho building burnod so rapidly that most of tho peoplo in tho upper floors wero obliged to uso tho ftfe-escapo or jump for their lives. One woman appoared at tho window in a room on tho north sido of tho building with a baby in hor arms. Hor pitiful crlos for help wore hoard until tho flamos gathered around her. Tho flromcn tried In vain to raiso a laddor on this sido of tho building. Tho woman -.vas told to throw out tho ropo or jump from tho window. Sho threw out tho rope, and as sho was climbing out of tho window tho flames enveloped hor and sho fell back Into tho building and perished.
Soven or oight womon and chlldron jumped from tho upper storios to a Bhod In tho rear of tho building. At ono tlmo Bovon persons wore struggling together on the shod, which had already caught flro from tho flying sparks, victims woro half naked. Several of them woro soon to tear oil tholr undorgarmofits that had caught flro.
One woman lay on tbo ground where sho had fallon, toarlng tho hair from her hoad. Hor hair had caught fire and It was with difficulty that tho flames woro quenched. Sho, togothor with tho others, had jumped from the roar windows, was picked up and carrlod ou
a stretcher to a saloon In tho neighborhood. In this saloon several porsaI9 lay on the pool-tables In all positions. Ono of tho womon was Annlo Schwartz, a laundry girl employed in the hotol. Sho wr.s rescued from tho rear of the fourth floor by a colored man who had already savod several of tho help.
So groat Is the confusion and excitement that tho Idontlty of thoso killed and injured can not bo ascertained. Undertakers and ambulances aro flying in all directions, and tho streets In the neighborhood of tho ill-fatod hotol aro thronged with excitod crowds of peoplo.
Tho flro is said to havo startod in tho kitchen. Tho building will bo a total loss. It was built two years ago at a cost of 8153,000. It is Impossible to learn'how many guests woro in tho hotel at the time tho fire broko out The total los's will not fall short of 8500,000, and tho building is partially covered by insuranoe. Tho proprietors of tho hotel aro Warren J. Loland and Van Huron Leland.
Tho hotol was ono of tho finest In Contral Now York. It stood on ono of tho most prominent corners of tho city and was woll known to the traveling public of tho Unitod States. Thoro oro 400 rooms In tho houso, awl owing to Its convenient location as rogards tho railroad dopot it had always boon filled with guosts. Tho Now York Contral railroad's station adjoined tho hotol. Recently all tho rooms and parlors of tho houso oro rodocoratod and renovated. Elegant furnituro was put In and tho ontiro hotol glvon a practically now appearanco. It was a sis-story structure built of stopo, brick and Iron. Thero was an ontranco on oach cornor. Running along tho two stroot sidos betwoen tho ontrancos woro a numbor of storoB. A restaurant was attached to tho hotel. All tho rooms woro steam hoatcd.
