IN the urticle on beet sugar yesterday nu error occurred which conveys different impression from that intended. It should have been 300 barrels instead of 300 pounds that tho factory turned out at Grand Ljlanil.

THE Democmtio papers call Mr. Mills, of Texas, a Jefi'ersoniau Democrat and yet Mr. Jefferson repeatedly Haid that wo should manufacture for ourselves every article we could, even if it did cost more, that in no other way oould wo mako our country independent of foreisfn nations.

THE yield of grain this year is esti' mated to bo about 20 per oent. Hinailor than usual. From this cause, the passage of tho silvor bill and tho good prospects cf tho tariff bill, prioes have advanood over those of a year ago from 84 cents to 551.11 on wheat, or about 3'2 por oont from 43 acuta to 65J cents on corn, or 29 por cent., and from2G to 4-1 cents on oats, or G9 per oent.

The New Orleans Times-Democrat knows how to extract philosophy from failure. It tells us that the Louisiana orange crop is short this year one-half, that tho Delaware peaches aro destroyed, nnd finally (hat New Orleans hnmnlf tg importing onions from Egypt and potatoes from Great Britain, and then remarks: "The failure, however, is merely a temporary incident. We shall probably have a larger acreag* and a larger crop next year than ever."

A recount of tht5 census may or may njt increase tho list of Now York's Inhabitants by a hundred thousand. But there is ono filing that thoso who wore disappointed that tho city showed up no larger forgot. Old cities do not grow OB fast as young onas. New York has possibly reached that period in her existence when her growth will bo steady, indeed, and sufficient, but no longer phenomenal. Besides there aro now other cities than New York on the continent.

ONCE in a wliilo a fiee trado advocate makes a fatal admission. The New \ork Herald, speaking of reciprocity with Amorioan nations, says the benefit to our farmers will not bo "by now markets for their grain and othor pro duoto, "but by tho greater prosperity of the manufacturing operations whioli will result from a wider market for American manufactures." That is to say, tho more peoplo wo employ in manufacturing, tho bettor markot for our farm products. How, then, can it benefit our farmers to import from Europe goods wo oan make here?

IN tho celebrated suit of Ohio against James M. Lane and his bondsmen to rooover $-19,013.29 for defalcations committed by tho ex-treasurer, a compromise liaa been effeoted by the bondsmen and the oase taken out of Court. By the terms of tho compromise tho bondsmen confess judgment in favor of Piokaway county for $37,104.06 and oosts less 83,600 whioh has already boon oolleoted from Lane's estate and paid into the County Treasury. They agree to pay this judgment by liquidating 825,000 worth of Pickaway County Infirmary bonds that mature in March and September, 1891, and applying tho balance on tho same eerios of bonds that mature in 1703.

Interesting Information from Imliaua Cities and Towns.

,y Blown Up by Dynamite. IsntANM'oi.is, Intl., Oct. 7.— Morprantown, a littlo liamlet in Morgan County, has beon onjoyinc: a variepaujd tasto of border life over since last Friday morning, when a dozen "toughs'' undertook to "clean out*' tho saloon of llodney Halt at that place. HuiT was in tot moil of the proposed attack and rallied a number of Ills friends at his saloon. When the attacking party appeared a pitched battle was begun, in which clubs, knives and even revolvers played a part. The attacking party were beaten off after a long fight, which resulted in a number of broken heads and knife wounds, none of which were dangerous. Since tho first engagement the tight has broken out in spots at various times ami culminated at 4 o'clock Monday morning in the explosion of an immense charge of dynamito under Huff's saloon, completely wrecking the building and destroying its contents. Suspicion falls upon the men who attacked the saloon Frl* day, but it is believed by many that the anti-saloon element seized this opportunity to rid themselves of tho nuisance. It is said that the only other saloon in the place, which is run by William Mussleman. would no doubt have suffered the same fate but for the fact that he and his family livo over the place.

Charged with Arson.

HU.NTISUTOS, Ind., Cot. 7. Joseph Rattnrman, sheriff of Shelby County, 0., has arrested Charles Shearer on a charge of arson. Shearer went with him without a requisition, About a year ago a private bridge over a canal in Shelby County was burned. The structure., which was a wooden one, was built for the accommodation of some farmers, and when the grand jury investigated the alfair it returned an indictment against Shearer, who lived there at the time of the tire. It is charged that Shearer had a spite at the farmers and chose this method of settling the score.

Wheat In Southern Indl.iua. COI.I'Mltv-, Ind., Oct. 7. For several years past tho farmers in Southern Indiana have sown much less than half tb» wheat of former years. This year an unusually large crop is being put out, which will aggregate considerable more than half the tillable land. That sown early looks line, but there aro thousands of acres yet unsown on account of the continued wet weather, which will mako tho crop a late one.
