Methodism in Iudiaua dates back to the opening of the present century, but it is needles to remark that its organization and power differed very materially then from now. It was a number of years indeed before even oue conference was organized, and quite a period from that date until the Indiana conference was divided and the North Indiana Conference formed. It was not until 1802 that tho present number was constituted by the formation of the Northwest Conference from ihe North Indiana, atd the Southeast Conference from tholndiiaua. At the time of its formation iu 1852 the Northwestern Indiana Conference contained 18,729 lay members aud 78 ministers, against -12,039 lay m-.-mburs and 255 ministers in 18SU. CONFERENCE NOTES.
The sessions of tho N. W. Conference have been held in this city twice bafore, once in 1856 and onoe in 1871 Tho .-'csion of the Iudiaua oonfcronce were held here in 1843.
Rev. S. B. Town, of Terre Haute, is the first Mot-hodist minister to remain five years at one Btation under the new law, although several others in other oonferonoes bntmisH his time by a few weeks.
TI10 probability is that Bishop Fowler will be unable to preside much of tho time during the sessions of the conference. It is possible that he oannot preach next Sunday. He has been a great sufferer from throat trouble and is still under the oare of his physician.
