AT the oloee of the last fiscal year, June 30, 1890, there was 46,776 Indiana pensioners on the roll of the agenoy at Indianapolis, and they drew $6,290,481. Of this number Montgomery oounty hod 730) who drew $100,803. Sinoe June 30, on account cf original reissue and inoreaso oases will add about 60 per oent. to the amount paid annually, so that the amount that will oome to Montgomery county next year will at least IHJ $150,000, every dollar of whioh oan be oredited to Republioan legislation. ONE thome of the Democratic speakers is the lie that was started on its rounds by the New York World that agricultural implements are sold abroad at two-thirds the'price thatjthey are sold to tlio farmers in America. Although the World has been oonvioted of lying time and again Demooratio newspapers and speakers oontinue to circulate it Tho World dishonestly quoted the figures to foreign wholesale buyers and made the comparison with the retail figures at home, and thns sought to create tho impression that the foreign farmer pajd less for his implements than the Amerioan farmer paid. When a free trader resorts to lying aa is olear in this inBtaood, it is evident that he ia hard pushed for argument.
WBAT Orawfordayillo most needs is a Sooiety for the Promotion of Publio Spirit. There are many persons in every community who are enthusiastio lor all progress, provided they are not called upon to help defray tho necessary expenses. This may be termed an Artemaa Ward sort of publio spirit, who it will be remembered was willing to sacrifice all his wife's relations rather than see the war for the integrity of the Union prove a failure. This is not tho kind of publio spirit that fights battlos or builds oities. To have a general revival we must have more publio spirited men, men who are willing to lead both with their money and influenoe. A Sooiety for the Promotion of Publio Spirit is one of the demands of the times.

New Wonder.
We livo in an ago of wonders, and ono of the greatest has roached Crawfordsville and we shall attempt to describe It.
Since 1TT1 tho Encyclopaedia Britannica has beon tho crowning work in English literature. Its history and growth aro a part of tho history of the growth and diffusion of knowledgo. As enlightenment and culture have increased, this monumental curriculum of learning has grown and kept pace with them. A word as to its growth will bo interesting
The success of tho original was such that the editors and publishers v.-oro awakoned to a sense «f the truo importance of tho task thoy bad taken in hand and to tho necessity for a moro comprehensive scheme than at first adopted and its roception in" spired them to soon sot about its enlargement and revision. Suico then it has been the standard and as tho literary world demanded from time to timo has run through eight successive editions and supplouiont, af follows:
First edition, 8 vols., published 1771. Second edition,
IOVOIB.,177S-1783.
Third edition, IS vols., 173S-17V7. Supplement, 3 vols., 1801. Fourth edition, 20 vols., 1801-1810. Fifth edition, 20 vols., completed 1S17, with a supplement of 7 vols.. 1SHV lt-J4. Sixth edition, 20 vols., 1S23 Seventh edition, 21 vols., 1830-1S42. Eighth edition, 21 vols., 1S53-18H1. Tho reader will sco that sinco this Inst revision great scientific discovories have been made, much history has been written unknown territory has been explored, and countloss mighty events havo been written by Time. To keep pace with this progress wo now have the Ninth Edition, ofTwontyfour volumes, averaging 850 pages each 20,000 pages, 250,000 subjects! The following comparison of amountsof type required and prices of other great works, is by Prof. A. P. Lyon, of New York, i:i the Electrotype Journal:
The Bible contains I!,.W0,000 cms. Webster's Die., 20 uuo.000 ems at *12. Chamber's Cyc., 4S 000,00(1 cms nl ?f,0. Johnson's Cyc., .W (XX),OIK) cms., at ?-tS. Apploton's Cyc., (10,000,000 cms., ut fSn. Encyclopaedia Britannica, 140,wX,000 cms at *120 to $195.
Tho completion of iho Ninth Edition has enabled the public to measure tiiis ma^nif cent work and compare it with other c-j-clopiedias. The result lias been to esmLlis beyond question its unqualified superiority. It is a giant wuero others are pigmies. It stands the noblest work in all literaturo tho ono only adequate representative of the advanced thought and scholarship of the world. In the amouut of brain-work furnished, it immeasurably transcends all competition. It is the only Encyclopaedia in which each principal sub" Ject is treated by an acknowledged authority upon that subject. No other has spent one-third as much monr yon literary labor, as tho Britannica. Not one has given $10,. 000 for a single article, or fCOO a page for written matter, as it has. No other can show a list of pricipal contributors cither so eminent in th'oir departments of scholarship, so varied in nationality and profession or so numerous. Tho full list of contributors number 1,145 persons, and include tho most eminent literary and scientific names of Europe and America.
Tho English Edition of the work Is sold in this country at $8.00 per vol., and the American Edition at 15.00 per vol., in cloth binding making tho cost of tho set of 24 vols, respectively $192 and $120.
While the Britannica Is tho acknowledged standard, incomparably tho best and most desirable Encloptedla In existence, its high cost has placed it beyond tho reach of most people. This bar to its popular use has now been happily removed.
By a new process of etching upon zino, giving a cloarer and harder surface than even an electrotype plate, the art of reproduction has at length been brought to a higher perfection. The now Popular Edition of tho Britannica is a porfoct and oxact reproduction of the original work pago for page, by this new process, which, tor clearness and beauty of print, leaves nothing to be desired. And it is this which is new offered to our people, at an astoundmgly low price, by tho enterprise of Mr. O. M. Lncey. Do not think this is in way a cheap, old and unsalable book, on flimsy straw or "unlau.lr'ed bass-wood" paper, in papor covers, and with a glued back. Wo havo seen it, and it is made bettor than tho average book in your library I It is a handsomo, large, new volumO in genuine English cloth, heavy oakum—not strawboards, double-hinged, flexible back and on fine super-sized and super-calendei od book paper, with colored maps, plates, illustrations, Index, marginal references, (tho only American reproduction having them) and—just call and 'examine It fir yourself at tho sturo of O. M. Lacey. has acquired tho exclusive right to tand'.o it in Montgomery county, and by the term of their contract with the publisher, it il never be sold hero through agents. uly may wo say with tho poet— '•We are living, wo aro dv/olling
In a grand and awful timo.
In an age, on ages, telling] To bo living in sublime!" The thought that this grand work, which is in itsel a Library of Human Knowledge, has at last, by the beneficent genius of American scicntifi invention boon placed within the reach of the hurnblost and poorest of our favored land, should awaken in us thankfulness that wo livo in America.
